As the chapters progress, Gene shows the readers his way of thinking towards Phineas, by describing his “unexpected excitement” (27) when Phineas was about to receive a scolding from Mr. Patch-Wither, the substitute headmaster of Devon during the summer session. Surprisingly, when Phineas (aka Finny) further explained why he wore the school tie as a belt,

The media treatment and Dave Cullen’s treatment showed a clear contrast between what both of them thought about the killers. Through out the book he expresses many times that everybody had came to many conclusions with the right facts but the wrong answer. It was clear through the diction of the book that the words goth, TCM( Trench coat mafia), or just the word misfit were not able to fit Eric and Dylan. Eric and Dylan were “misfit geniuses” or so he took from the Eric’s journal talking about The Pastures of Heaven.

The very first page of this book we are presented with a letter from Alex, who is obviously leaving home. The letter I believed was a really cool way to give us the background of the story we needed to know on a personal level. This was our first look at Alex. He seems excited to be out in the Alaskan bush. Not too many people would be excited about that.

I believe the biggest misconception I had about school shooters is their feelings, or what I assumed is a lack of. What I have learned about the feelings of school shooters is that there is typically a guiding factor or initial issue that festers in someone. Said issue causes this person or group of people to act out. From what I have observed, these students typically have the brightest futures yet remain the most misunderstood of all students. Most of these students who carry out shootings killing themselves in the end, giving them a lifetime worth of attention they were clearly seeking without any repercussions for their actions.

The passage opens with an examination of Eric’s thoughts in the months before Columbine happened, which can be viewed from numerous passages Eric left behind in his journals. Eric continuously talks about how he will need to suppress his emotions in order to be able to go through with the attack. Cullen is quick to use pathos in order to get readers involved with Eric’s emotions, or lack of, at that time. He takes readers on a journey into Eric's mind as he displays some of the most apathetic lines Eric ever wrote. Cullen points out that “It was a mark of Eric’s ruthlessness that he comprehended the pain and consciously fought the urge to spare it” (276).

The Characterization of Cole Matthews Appearance is one way that a writer shows what a character is like. It’s the features a character has that tells something about them. It’s important because a character’s appearance can give the reader clues about what they’re like. When I pictured Cole Matthews, I imagined him to be tall, have green eyes, and brunette hair that was put into a quiff.
