Kalley Ravndalen Essay 2 In the historical study, Homeward Bound: American Families in the Cold War Era, the author Elaine Tyler May conveys her argument to be on how people embraced the dominant gender roles and family models in regard to the Cold War. May uses the word containment to describe a response to postwar developments and she also shares how people adhered to this idea because it was a guide to lead them in their own personal and political lives. Domestic containment was occurring most commonly in the homes because most of the decisions that people had made were because of their fears of the cold war world. People of the time believed that “Containment was the key to security,” and this eventually became known as one the goals

The book of the unknown Americans turns out to be a love story with a bit of a twist. It involves at lot of different families and people that migrated to the United States of America. One Latino family, the Rivera’s, from Mexico move to the United States of America to give their daughter a better life. Their life in Mexico was nice and simple, they had a great piece of property and Arturo ran his own construction company. They needed to move to America because their daughter who is only 15 years old had an accident at her dad’s job.

“Illegal Immigrants” are deported every day due to various reasons. Many of them with family ties to US citizens. If we “welcome” back to society to reformed felons, why are we so harsh to “reformed felons” that are on deportation proceedings with family ties to the US? While I agree felonies should not be taken lightly, what would an immigrant convicted of a felony needs to do to show reformation and should the US allow this individuals to stay in the US with their families with legal status? Why?

The migration was a watershed in the history of African American . it leased their overwhelming concentration in the south , open up industrial jobs to people who had up then been mostly farmers , and gave the first significant impetus to their urbanization. Several factors precipitated one of the largest population shifts in the countrys history. in 1898 the tiny boll weevil invaded Texas and proceeded to eat its way east across the south. Crops were devastated , thousands of agricultural workers thrown of the land , and the long reign of king Cotton as the regions economic backbone was finally brought to an end .

Immigration reform can go either way to helping immigrants and asylum seekers or placing further restrictions on their lives by even more punitive laws. The United States has faced a long issue on whether or not should they reform the current laws put in place in order for “Aliens” to be able to live here and become a citizen and get the American dream so many people have come to achieve. Immigration laws should be reformed because America was founded on immigrants, they help make the community, and they contribute to the community. For several years now, Congress has been focusing on a new type of bill or act that will be set in place for current asylum seekers. The most current reform act is the Real ID Act of 2005.

When I was six years old, living in Ethiopia, my dad won an American green card visa lottery among 53,000 people. Although it was exciting news, family members were discouraged because my dad could not afford the visa processing and traveling expense. However, he found a sponsor in Seattle, which allowed him to settle in America. As soon as he found a good house and a stable job, he started the process for me and my family. Multiple errors and obstacles delayed our processing for five years.

Imagine waking up in a house that is not your home. You do not know what the morning routine is, what is eaten for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or even know what is and what is not appropriate behavior. In the movie Coming to America which was directed by John Landis, Eddie Murphy’s character, Prince Akeem, is in for a cultural shift when he decides to move from Africa to Queens, New York in order to find his princess. In the film, Akeem is exposed to how Africa differs from America when he discovers the differences in power distance, work ethic, and the value of money.

Did you know their undocumented immigrants in the U.S.? People say undocumented immigrants should be deported but others say they need a chance to have more opportunities in a new country. Undocumented immigrants should get a path to citizenship because some immigrants know nothing about their country because they’ve been in the U.S. for so long. It also helps the economic system get better so the community or society has money and needed things for the U.S. It keeps people from living in fear so lawful consequences won’t happen to those undocumented immigrants.

The Great Migration was a time of change it was a time where African-Americans had the chance for a nice life. During this time people of color were moving to the northern half of the USA, in order to get a new start. During this they had to leave the only life they knew in hopes for something better in a different place. To begin with, after World War 1 began in 1914 industries lacked the laborers in their urban cities.

The first eight years of my life, I spent in India where I was born. Growing up I was constantly reminded by my parents that I needed to make them proud by getting a good job and living a good lifestyle. They told me this because they did not want to see me live a hard life like they did. When I was nine years old, I moved from India to the United States of America. The reason why I moved to America was not because I was living a bad life in India, it was so that I could have a better education and more opportunities in life.

A person's view on culture heavily influence how one sees and views the world around them. People are influenced by the cultures surrounding them as well as where they live. In the personal essay Two Ways to Belong in America ,written by Bharati Mukherjee, Bharati and her sister Mira were both born in Calcutta, India , but later moved to the United States. Bharati loved America and said "I am an American citizen and she is not" speaking to how she had embraced and been influenced by her surroundings but her sister had not.

Disappointment. Betrayal. Deceived. All these terms are common themes in the writing of several immigrants during their journey to America. After reading many personal accounts of immigrants and learning about their expeditions to America, it became evident it is not as joyous a ride as many make it seem.

We as the U.S the strongest power in the world has spent ourselves into a mountain of deft that I’m not sure even years of budget managing could get us out of. We have gotten ourselves just the way most households have gotten themselves into debt by grossly over sending. We as the U.S spend money we don’t have we think like most Americans we can just make more, or just make a interest payment, we no longer manufacture what we need to take care of ourselves, on a day to day basis. We buy from others much more than we sell. I think there is a problem globally.
