In an effort to stop communism from spreading, the United States and its allies practiced containment. Containment is the act of keeping something harmful under control, this meant that the United States and its allies will get involved if they needed in order to stop communism from spreading. The U.S and its allies managed to help several countries from falling into communism, but they also suffered their hardships and lost many men during a war to protect their allie, South Korea. On February 1946, the United States, State Department received a telegram, the telegram seemed to give of two warnings. One being that the Soviets believed in communism being superior rather than capitalism, and the second one saying that they presumed they would …show more content…
Cuba became a communist country under the dictatorship of Fidel Castro, the united states did attempt to stop it but they failed. (Doc D) The United States late on discovered that there was a range of nuclear missiles sites in Cuba, the United States responded to this by announcing a quarantine. (Doc D) A quarantine is a place of isolation in which people or even animals are placed after coming from somewhere else, this was usually practiced to stop pesticides and other infections. The United States did this against ships carrying offensive weapons to Cuba. The Soviet began to remove their missiles and the conflict was avoided (Doc D) even though, the united states failed they restored themselves with this move. Cuba was not the only country that was communist, North Korea who was guided by the Soviet Union was also communist in contrast of South Korea who was being guided by the United States. The North Koreans surprised attacked the South, several American Forces were sent to defend the South. (Doc C) Douglas MacArthur, who was the general successfully counterattacked the North and pushed them back to the border of North Korea and communist China. (Doc C) China the decides to join the war pushing UN and US back into the South, the war lasted for several years and ended in 1953 with fifty-thousand Americans dead. (Doc
The United States was easily taken advantage of in a manner that could have been detrimental if on a wider scale. Containment was labeled as an example of “the bankruptcy of American policy” due to this reason as well as its ineffable consequences (Document A). One seeks support from their allies during taxing times, and not once did the United States receive aid from other nations while fighting merciless battles for people in which they had no previous association. The American people had become neglected as government attention was diverted off of American soil for an unfair amount of time. Overall, other nations’ lack of concern towards increased communism nations implicitly revealed the pointlessness of containing dictatorships in lands where the people possessed no motivation whatsoever to defend
During the year 1947, a speech delivered by President Harry S. Truman, know as The Truman Doctrine, sometimes called “Truman’s containment speech”, which warned United State Congress that we should support other countries, or they would fall to Communism. Greece was in a sensitive situation, they can fall to communism anytime which would make them more powerful. He talked about some reasons why United State should help others. In his speech, he never mentioned the word “containment”, but all his points were lead to it. First part of the speech, he outlined the situation of Greece.
The Korean War has often been a controversial subject. Some say that an all-out war with China would have brought Russia into the conflict, creating WWIII. Others say that if we had done it right and hit hard, Communist powers would have backed off. No one can know for sure. It has been many years since the Korean War and Communism is still a threat.
It has been evident that America has moved “toward greater civil liberties” rather rapidly through the 20th century. The cultural shift of American lives has shown how much people were inspired by the idea of having basic civil rights. From the start of the 20th century to the end of the century, the cultural change was very monumental to lives of people and society today. It is very evident just from the past century how true James McGreevey
Fidel Castro was able to play on Cuba’s history in order to produce and maintain the revolution. Castro was not only able to use the current conditions in Cuba to shape the conditions for a successful revolution, but he was able to prolong the revolutionary movement for decades. Cuba has a lengthy and complex history, filled with many missteps, and wrongdoings against the Cuban people that Castro drew from during the revolutionary period. Preceding 1959, Fulgencio Batista was in office, and he represented imperialistic powers to the citizens of Cuba. Castro was able to use the anti-imperialism present in both Cuba and Latin America to manufacture conditions for revolution.
Massive retaliation is using the nuclear weapons without threat and going straight into nuclear war. Another way to stop the spread of communism was the policy of containment, giving economic and military aid to countries at the risk of becoming communism. Communism is an economic and political system in which governments own everything and the government pays each person according to their abilities and needs. Any more countries that become communists will create the domino theory affect, one nation after the next start to fall and by the end, they all fall into communism(Ayers 819-950). All three presidents had figured out how they wanted to handle The Cold War.
Communism then took root in Cuba with Fidel Castro as the Prime Minister or dictator. In 1960 Fidel Castro nationalized U.S. companies in Cuba. At this time Cuba also became friends and traded with the Soviet Union, and at one point allowed the Soviet Union to put a missile base in Cuba. This was a big threat to the United States since Cuba was only 90 miles by sea from the U.S. The United States at that time also had a bad relationship with the Soviet Union since this was during the time of the Cold War.
The United States of America first acquainted with the Indochina area in 1954 after it began supporting France in its effort to reestablish control over its Vietnamese colony of which the United States’ main reason for supporting was to keep the idea of communism from spreading to another country’s government from Communist China. Containment, is the term in which describes the government United States’ attempts to limit the ever-expanding grasp of communism. This ideal developed during the early days of the Cold War, and gained momentum because American policymakers “learned from the pre-war era—that appeasement of aggression merely fueled increasingly more strident and unreasonable demands from dictators” and also from the “domino theory”,
The Korean War marked the beginning of the cold war between the United States of America in the west and The Soviet Union in the east. From 1910 , Japan annexed Korea after the Russo-Japanese war (1904-1905) according to the annexation treaty of 1901 and stayed under its control until 1945.After the victory of the Allied countries in World WarII and the defeat of the axis powers including Japan in 1945, Japan was forced to relinquish Korea . As a result , Korea was partitioned along the 38th parallel into two spheres of interest among two big victorious powers at that time : The Soviet Union in the east and the United States of America in the west.
Containment in Cuba How did the containment policy work against communism in Cuba? With World War 2 just ending countries in Europe were experiencing poverty. Then another so called war between the Soviet Union and the U.S. came up fighting to make countries communist and noncommunist. The Soviets wanted countries to become Communist so they could have friends.
Communism was becoming a big concern as it was making its way towards the United States. A large amount of money was put in for containment to be put in place around the world and keep communism out. One place it did not manage to contain was Cuba. Fidel Castro was culprit in heavily enforcing communism to his own people. Fidel Castro had always had communist values in him when he overthrew Cuban dictator, Fulgencio Batista, which Castro took the place of.
With the Soviet’s help, North Korea pursued its own wishes for a union and used military force to cross the boundary separating the two nations. The United Nations quickly took action for their ally and sent in American troops to defend the south. North Korea’s military was then pushed back to China’s borders by the American troops. Because their military was pushed on to their soil, China joined side with North Korea. The fighting between the two opposing countries became a strong influence in causing of the Cold War.

Today’s society is one of invention, of discovery, of new ideas. It is also one of war, greed, and power. There exists such an idea known as democracy. This ideal is one that means freedom of speech, individual freedom, or the right to election of a society’s leadership. Yet, there is another conflicting set of ideals known as Communism or Fascism, or in broader terms, Collectivism.
Having lived under capitalism, socialism and communism, I admit left leaning thinking puzzles me, although I can understand it. Of course it’s all about people and the best way to organize a society. Yet the left says it’s more about people than economics and that’s that’s the first point where I start to disagree. So tell me, if you can’t fund a society, how can the people benefit? Get the economics right
