I read a book about Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. It told a lot about their differences. I am comparing their personalities, their features, and their sides in the Civil War. The difference between their personalities are that Grant was more humble and didn't have much of a temper. Lee had a temper and was always hurrying around to do things. Their differences in their features are that Grant was kind of short and stalky. Lee was tall and somewhat skinny. Grant had brown hair and a beard, Lee had gray hair and a gray beard. During the Civil War grant was on the union side and Lee was on the confederate side. Lee and Grant were both generals for their side. In the Spanish American war, they both served together and were
Albeit General Robert E. Lee wore red and Private Buster Kilrain wore blue, these two men were quite similar in several ways. Each soldier was a leader in a war that they chose to fight in, in order to uphold and defend their respective ideologies. Despite those ideologies being opposite, each felt theirs was superior and in turn was willing to sacrifice his life to protect it and the way of life it afforded. Buster Kilrain and Robert E. Lee were very close in age, Kilrain at the ripe old age of fifty-one and Lee at the slightly riper age of fifty-seven.
In Bruce Catton’s article, “Grant and Lee: A study in Contrasts” he contrasts the differences in the ideologies of the north and the south, while comparing the similarities between the generals themselves. To develop the thesis Catton begins by providing historical context on the two generals working out the terms for surrender of the south, this sets the stage for the next few paragraphs contrasting them. When he contrasts the generals he describes their childhoods and then goes on to describe the ideologies they supported. After this, the author compares the similarities between the generals, which tells the reader that despite the fact they lead two opposing factions in the civil war they weren’t so different as people.
Grant was a person of trust and he knew what he wanted to do as president, he didn’t care what people thought because everyone knew he was right. But he had a different outlook on certain things
For example, George Washington is a general for the war, unlike John Paul Jones who is not. There are four other things that
Lee surrender his army and made the Union win the war. On April 9, 1865, the two generals met at the Appomattox Court House where they both signed a peace agreement marking the end of the Civil War and also Grant let Lee and his men return to there homes so no one got hurt or died. Ulysses S. Grant was a great and one of the best general and commanders during the Civil War. After the war, Grant was promoted to full general and oversaw the military during Reconstruction. Without Grant's bravery during the war, the United States would still be separated into two different countries.
Ben Osland Mr. Reid Social Studies, P.5 November 18, 2014 General Robert E. Lee: Civil War Project Today the Civil War is a major event in our nation, but what would to our nation be like today if a powerful significant person like General Robert E. Lee wasn’t part of the Civil War? Before the Civil War started Robert E. Lee was born and raised in Westmoreland County, Virginia, and was the son of Major General Henry Lee III, or the Governor of Virginia. Lee started his military war when he realized and saw himself as an extension of his family’s greatness in war. At age eighteen he got into the West Point Military Academy, where he worked hard and put his mind to work.
General Ulysses S. Grant had a great impact on the United States both in his time as a war general and in his time as president. His role in the Civil War was instrumental to the Union victory and the strategies he employed saved many union troops and ended the war quickly. He had many wins, but also many losses and setbacks that were devastating. He learned and adapted through those setbacks and won the war and the American public. The United States would have had a much harder time winning the war and with recovery efforts afterward were it not for General Grant.
“Robert E. Lee (1807-70) served as a military officer in the U.S. Army, a West Point commandant and the amazing general of the Confederate Army during the American Civil War 1861-1865. In June 1861, Lee gained command of the Army of Northern Virginia, which he would lead for the rest of the war. Lee and his army achieved great success during the Peninsula Campaign and at Second Bull Run and Fredericksburg, with his greatest victory coming in the bloody Battle of Chancellorsville. In the spring of 1863 Lee invaded the North only to be defeated at the Battle of Gettysburg. With Confederate defeat a near blowout, Lee continued on, battling Union General Ulysses S. Grant in a series of battles in Virginia in 1864-1865 before he finally surrendered
Robert E. Lee’s father worked for George Washington as "Light Horse Harry". Robert E. Lee proved himself to be very valuable during the Mexican-American War under the command of General Winfield Scott. He was a valued tactician and commander. Ulysses S. Grant also took part in the Mexican-American War. He proved himself to be an efficient quartermaster and efficiently overlooked the movement of supplies.
Robert E. Lee’s (1807-1870) contribution to the United States as a war general and commander received positive connotations for his commitment, attitude and inspiration on the battlefield. However, it is debateable about his contributions because of Robert Lee’s association in the Civil War (1861-1865) to the Confederate Army that fought for the Southern States. Robert Lee lead many successful campaigns and battles including the following; helping defeat Mexican armies that lead to U.S land gains and westward expansion, battles against a more powerful army in the Civil War. Despite these achievements Lee’s loyalty for the Confederate Army that fought to uphold slavery undermines his success and is highly debateable about whether his contribution is justified or not. Robert Lee’s contributions to his nation begin before the Civil War in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848).
Grant on the other hand was not raised wealthy at all he knew the struggle, he had a vision for where he thought the future was going. Completely different, but exactly the same when it came to their personality. Almost the same even when they were fighting, Grant fought with tenacity, Lee fought knowing he would give his life at any second if he had too. This is why people looked up
American Civil War (Role of ulysses S Grant) In the civil war Ulysses S Grant played a major role in the american union victory. The reason why he did it was because he won many and multiple battles as a union leader and defeated the one and only Robert E. Lee. General Robert E. Lee was an aristocrat. Unlike Grant, Lee was from Virginia and was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Lee was born into wealth. He liked property and rich people. Lee considered himself a relation to his region.
Casandra Salazar Ms. Tobias English III GT 12 January 2017 The Great Gatsby After reading and watching The Great Gatsby, I gathered the dissemblance and alikeness in both the book and motion picture. As written in “The Great Gatsby”, the first example of similarity is that the book has the same theme to the “Roaring 20’s”. In the written book, Fitzgerald described the parties as huge and dramatic, where as in the movie, the directors did a fantastic job translating Fitzgerald’s words into a lavish visual spectacle of booze, sequins, and confetti.
Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. were both born 120 years apart. They were also killed ten days apart in the same month, years apart of course. Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. were one of the biggest influences on Slavery and Civil Rights. As well as being great leaders during their times. Both of these men were similar, but also had their differences.
