Guillame de Machaut, unlike John Dowland, has a well-known composition called Agnus Dei, and it is a prayer for mercy and peace. Machaut created music for the church and was the first to do in a polyphonic approach. Agnus Dei became a staple in the mass ordinary, as it referred to “speaking of christ”. This song was meant to appeal to the mind and not so much the ears, it was a revamp on the Middle Age Gregorian chant. John Dowland was from 1563-1626, so he is from the late Renaissance period in which he primarily wrote melancholy songs based off of popular consort songs and dance music from that time period. John Dowland was English, so he wouldn’t have made Gregorian chant inspired songs seeing that he was Protestant. Guillame de Machaut was French. John Dowland was also famous for his instrumental music based on sorrow, while Guillame primarily wrote love songs. …show more content…
Both from the later eras of the two different time periods, wrote secular songs based on melancholy whether it be from love or despair, and both composers used certain styles and changes in texture, range, melody to heighten these moods and emphasize the emotion that they wanted to portray. Both composers wrote in vernacular languages, French and English respectively. Unlike Dowland, Machaut accoladed a couple of songs to the Gregorian chant through a polyphonic approach. Guillame de Machaut and John Dowland were great composers with similar idealistic
Throughout one’s lifetime, it is not common that a journey one has pursued becomes a nationwide phenomenon; although, for two men, that was exactly the case. Chris McCandless and Adam Shepard both embarked new, difficult, although different journeys. McCandless embarked on a journey in search of self reliance whilst Shepard left everything to prove that the American Dream is in fact alive and well. These adventurers set out on divergent journeys, but both had a strong impact on society and those they encountered along the way. Although both of these men were hardworking and successful in what they did, it is evident that Shepard’s selfless journey to motivate people to pursue the American Dream had a greater purpose.
Wes Moore and the “Other” Wes Moore “Young boys are more likely to believe in themselves if they know there's someone, somewhere, who shares that belief.” Two kids grew up in the same city, with the same name, which is Wes Moore. The both had many similarities and differences. They both grew up fatherless. They both had hated many similar experiences.
Although you 've may have seen or heard many people taking crazy trips out in the world to accomplish a thing or two you may have even heard of these two guys. For one Adam Shepard wanting to accomplish things he wanted right along as Chris McCandless. Both white males, right along both of them have, a college degree, Chris is being 24 and Adam being 25 years of age. The Motivation for Chris McCandless was that he wanted to show everyone that you didn 't need all that money to get all the materialistic things in life, While Adam Shepherds motivation was to show Barbara Ehrenreich Author of Diamond Nickel that the American Dream was real for everyone . Between who was most admirable out of Chris McCandless or Adam Shepard it would have to be Adam Shepard because what he has done is what everyone wanted to do is to accomplish, The American Dream.

Most of his first compositions show this. They are mostly in Latin and have more than one melody at the same time. One of his most famous works Spem in alium (meaning “In No Other Is My Hope”) shows this style of music. He wrote this around 1570 which is after King Henry VIII broke away from Rome.
Ovid’s Metamorphosis vs Harrison Bergeron All our life we have been taught to follow the rules, but what happens when we don’t? Two examples of this are the Icarus tales, the original source, “Metamorphoses” by Ovid and the short story “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut. They both tell the story of a son who pushes gets too greedy and overcome with emotion and in the long run that ends up killing him.
Religion was a part of daily life in the Colonial period, Rowlandson and de Vaca are excellent examples of this because regardless of what they were going through they thought of God. Even though Rowlandson and de Vaca were not the same religion and lived in slightly different times they both had similar storys and were able to bring us two fascinating novel. While Mary Rowlandson and Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca were not perfect Christians, they are humans who made mistakes. God put them in these situations to make them better Christians. What we learn from them is even if you have struggled in your devotion of your faith if you devote yourself again to God, he will help you through hard
Michael Pollan’s Escape from the Western Diet connects well with what Mary Maxfield says in her article. Both Pollan and Maxfield talk about the ways that dieting is taking over American people’s healths and causing them to become even unhealthier. In Mary Maxfield’s argument she talks about how people believe everything that diet industries say, even though they know that the information they give you is false. This connects really well with what Michael Pollan talks about in his article, which is that people know that these theories that are used for the Western diet are not accurate, but yet they still decide to use the Western diet to help them become healthier.
Thomas Morton and William Bradford are both famous for their accounts of New England. Thomas Morton and William Bradford practiced different religions. Thomas Morton was a conservative Anglican, which meant that he believed in the Church of England. William Bradford was a Puritan, which meant that he wanted separate congregations from the Church of England. Both men based their accounts of New England off of their religious views.
The arrival of the first Europeans in the Americas is dramatically captured through the many writers who attempted to communicate what they saw, experienced and felt. What is more, the very purposes of their treacherous travel and colonization are clearly seen in their writings; whether it is poetry, history or sermons. Of the many literary pieces available today, William Bradford and John Winthrop’s writings, even though vary because the first is a historical account and the second is a sermon, stand out as presenting a clear trust in God, the rules that would govern them and the reason they have arrived in the Americas. First of all, William Bradford provides an in-depth look into the first moment when the Puritans arrived in the Americas. In fact, he chronicles the hardships they face on their way to Plymouth, yet he includes God’s provision every step of the way.
From reading the text, the information I obtained was that the Middle Ages was the most unpleasant and dirtiest time in Europe between 450 and 1450 it was after the time the Roman empire was demolished. The catholic church ruled over most of Europe, and because the Middle or Dark ages were such a miserable time in European history the music was a reflection of the people. Going back to the catholic church most if not all the song were written for the church but mostly for God, because the music was written for God that is why it is rare to find the composer's name on composition for it was seen as blasphemous. Most of the songs were sung and written in Latin with monophonic singing known as the Gregorian chant, this was one of the popular
Gloria from Pope Marcellus Mass was composed by Palestrina as a sacred choral work performed purely in 6-part choirs including a soprano, an alto, two tenors, and a bass. Its texture is mixed mostly by homorhythmic and particular parts of polyphony. Compared to that of Cantata No.140 of Bach, its pure a cappella medium provides audience a deeper sense of holiness than 4-part choir with orchestra in the former. Beginning solely by an tenor singing in Latin with haunting echoes from the open space in the first line[Palestrina, Gloria, from Pope Marcellus Mass, 0:00-0:08], Palestrina brought the picture of a christ chanting in a heavenly church in monophonic. Palestrina gave high priority to the overall clarity of the work.
The themes of the two poems are the same in that they are both poems about anticipating the loss of a parent. The fathers in these poems appear to be at the end of their life. Similarly, both poets

This melody is the medieval chant Dies irae which is traditionally 8 sung in the mass ceremony for the dead. The chant melody is soon shifted up to a higher register and is played by woodwinds and pizzicato 9 strings in a quick dance-like rhythm (Kamien, 2014: 297). Alterations with the violas in the beginning of the witches’ dance, followed by low tubas and bassoons in forte playing the Dies irae in long even notes. Higher horns and trumpets starts the beginning of the Dies Irae, but this time played faster (Kamien, 2014: 298).
