North and south civil war While both sides fought the civil war over the issue of slavery, the North had fought for more moral reasons, while the South fought to preserve its own institutions. I will be writing about this as my topic and explain how it started, who were involved and what were the reasons, etc. The civil war was the most historical event in all of the world and at a site I found and used it says “While the Revolution of 1776-1783 created the United States, the Civil War of 1861-1865 determined what kind of nation it would be.” Meaning that the civil war was the changing point in the country in this era. It was the north and the south fighting over slavery and institutional reasons too. While the north didn't have …show more content…
“The American Civil War was the greatest war in American history. 3 million fought - 600,000 paid the ultimate price for freedom. And a war for freedom, it was. The desire for freedom traveled deeper than the color of skin and farther than the borders of any state.” The general of the civil war is Ulysses S. Grant, he was a general in the north and here from a site I have more information “It was Grant's understated brilliance that won The Civil War. With the Mississippi River heavily fortified, Grant sidestepped the Rebels by travelling up the Tennessee and Cumberland River, capturing Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, the first major Union victory.” He was one of the many leaders from the North. For the south their general was Robert E. Lee, he was an American and a south side soldier; he was also a general in the south. He had many battles and was considered the most successful and victorious general. He controlled and ordered the Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War from 1862; until his later surrender in 1865 to the north Americans. On December 6 of 1865 the Thirteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution was passed by Congress on January 31 of 1865 is finally accepted; Slavery is finally
A great divide occurred in America during the Civil War, and country was split into two sides; the Union or the Confederacy. A book by the name of The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara is a novel about one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War, which was the Battle of Gettysburg (which lasted three days). It has several historical figures in the book who fought in the war and suffered injuries, such as Henry Heth, Richard Stoddart Ewell, and John Buford. The Civil War was one of the many turning points in America’s history. It began with the seceding of the Southern states as they refused to emancipate their own slaves and letting them rebel.
Introduction Who was the best Civil War general, who was the best American General? The discussion and debate of who was better has gone on since the Civil War and will like go on for the rest of the history of the United State. Lee was the South’s accomplished general and Grant was the North’s slow rising average general, If you will. Lee vs Grant will be a discussion for many centuries. While many Americans had many similarities in the 1800’s the two path’s and styles was different.
When the war began, he was not even a soldier. He re-enlisted in the army in 1861. Whenever Lee surrendered at the Appomattox Court House, Grant showed respect and compassion to Lee and the Southern soldiers. In the beginning, Grant handled the West. He won the battle of Vicksburg, which was a huge turning point in the war.
Grant assumed command of the United States Army. Grant, being a graduate of West Point also, knew exactly what weaknesses to attack of Lee’s and put all of his time and resources into driving the Confederate Army back. Grant knew Lee’s army was hard pressed for men, food, ammunition, and other necessary resources to wage war and used this to his advantage. Despite Lee’s ability to fight a war of attrition against Grant, his actions were all but futile. In the summer of 1864 Lee’s forces were resorting to trench warfare outside of Petersburg; it was at this time that Lee realized he fighting a war that he had no hope of winning.
The North had many advantages. They beat the South in population they could draw soldiers from. The North had 22 million citizens where the South only had 5.5 million citizens. The North could transport supplies and people faster because of their roads, canals, and railroads. However the South disconnected from itself with barely any railroads and hard to move soldiers and goods from place to place.
The civil war was one of the most intense and destructive wars the U.S have ever experienced, the war left over 640,000 soldiers dead, 476,000 wounded and 400,000 missing, this resulting in about 2% of the population dead. Whilst the war brought violence and destruction it also resolved two important questions that were unable to be resolved by the revolution these include; weather the United States was going to be made up of many independent states or a united nation with an independent government, and weather the United States was going to remain as the largest slaveholding country. Before the war the division between the north and south was a rising problem, which reached its peak at the outbreak war, the division was based around the different
“Stonewall” Jackson “Stonewall” Jackson was one of the most respected Confederate generals and the most gifted tactical commanders in U.S. history during the American Civil War. His fearlessness and bravery in battle soon made him a war hero to the seceding South. “Stonewall” Jackson was a very interesting man with a complex history. He is most remembered for his speed and brutality in battle and many consider him the greatest at leading his troops to victory. Jackson’s personal discipline and religious dedication carried over into his command.
Ulysses S. Grant chased General Lee’s army for a long time in order to finally reach it and defeat it. The defeating of General Lee’s army is considered by many to be the end of the civil war, showing that General Ulysses S. Grant was a superior general to many other generals in the United States’ history. He used tactics that may have seemed controversial, but did help
Generals, such as Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman, helped lead the North to many victories. These strong leaders gave them greater military potential. With much pride and desire for equal rights, the Union fought fiercely to win the Civil War. The Confederates in the Civil War were the 11 Southern states that seceded from the Union.
The American Civil War: Industry vs. Agriculture The American Civil War was caused by a disagreement between the North and South on slavery due to the North’s advance in industrialization, while the South was still clinging to an agrarian based culture. The types of events that led up to the American Civil War were driven by the differing opinions of the North and the South. These events included speeches and protests, and also taking sides based on the level of industrialization. Northerners were more comfortable with the abolishment of slavery because they were more advanced in industry while the southerners relied on agriculture. The Emancipation Proclamation was a key event, in the proclamation
General Robert E. Lee was the commander of the Northern Virginian Army during the Civil War. Lee was brilliant at strategies and tactics of war. This brilliance, however, was not isolated. In order for these strategies and tactics of Lee’s to work, Lee had to have great influence and power over his men. Robert E. Lee was one of the greatest and most successful leaders this world will ever know.
The American Civil War changed Americans and their ideals about freedom in many ways. Northern and Southern United states began to have simmering tensions for the states’ rights versus federal authority, plus westward expansion, and slavery had huge effects on the states. An election which made anti-slavery Republican Abraham Lincoln the president of the United States of America in 1860, caused seven of the southern states to concede from the Union to make The Confederate States Of America soon after four more joined afterwards. It changed Americans in many ways as neighbors fought each other through the 4 gruesome years of the war. Conflict between the sides were like fights between brother and brother instead with many deaths.
In February 1861, a new government was on the horizon in the United States, known as the Confederate States of America. Composed of seven states from the South, this new government looked to separate from a union that they felt was tipping in power towards those who wanted to threaten the rights of the South, especially slavery. Similarly, in early 1775, colonists were preparing for revolution against a power that they felt oppressed their rights and wanted to take away their liberties. However, the Civil War was a not a complete representation of a second American Revolution. The Civil War was more than an unsatisfied party rebelling against a larger power, but a clash between two vastly different ways of life.
On April 8, 1864, the 13 amendment passed the Senate and passed the House of Congress on January 31, 1865. The 13th amendment declared freedom for all African-American slaves. Passing the 13th amendment cause the South to disagree with the North and the President of 1860, Abraham
The 13th amendment was passed by the congress on January 31, 1865, and ratified by the states on december 6, 1865. President Lincoln made the Emancipation Proclamation declaring “all persons held as slaves within any State, or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.” The Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery in the nation But it started to help abolishing slavery and making it and
