After the Union won the Civil War, the United States went into seven year period, known as Reconstruction. The goal of Reconstruction was to rejoin all the states into the Union and to help rebuild the South. While the goal of Reconstruction was rightful, the final result of the period didn’t do much to put America into a better place than where it was before the Civil War. During Reconstruction, the radical northern abolitionists was pushing to make America a country where everyone was equal, and granting every citizen, regardless of their ancestry. The Northerns tried to make everyone equal members of society and give each and every one of them a voice in their own government. Their efforts were resisted by the South who made up state laws
After the American Civil War ended in 1861, the government wanted to reconstruct the nation. Their goals for the reconstruction were to unify the nation, rebuild the economy, and abolish slavery. I believe it was possible to reconstruct successfully, however, there were some failures. the first intentions were unification. During Civil War, President Lincoln and congressional leaders were already thinking about how to reintegrate the south back into the union.
INTRO: Reconstruction; the most conflicting era in the United States history. Coming directly after the Civil War from 1865 thorough 1877, Reconstruction played a major part in the Land of the Free’s backstory. Throughout Reconstruction many things occurred within the North and South due to chaos within the government system, neighborhoods, and social classes. The creator of Reconstruction and the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln created the idea of Reconstruction in the South while the Civil War was going on.
Deliverance and emancipation began for many slaves the very day when Union Soldiers reached the townships and territories of the slave-holding states. Countless southern landowners and their families walked away from their plantations and farms as the war approached, and every city or location where the Union soldiers stepped, they were greeted by more and more African Americans looking for safety and refuge within the ranks of the Union forces. At the end of the war effort, approximately 4.2 million slaves were set free; however, these newly freedmen had absolutely nothing. Frederick Douglas said, “The freedmen were let alone – by everyone but their enemies” (Sterling, 1976). Nearly all were homeless, uneducated and all they had ever known
Reconstruction (1865 to 1877) was the time period that followed the American revolution in which did Northern states attempted to accommodate for the sudden changes in the United States government and integrate Southern states back into the north seamlessly. One of the major goals of reconstruction was to integrate the newly freed African Americans into society without relapsing and returning back to a state of slavery again. President Abraham Lincoln introduced the Ten Percent Plan in 1863 which would require 10 percent of the voters in the state to agree to be integrated back into the Union, which would create a slow and easy process for the Confederacy to join the Union once again. Post the war in 1865, Lincoln also passed the Freedmen’s
Following the ending of the Civil War in 1865, America was in an era known as the Reconstruction. The Reconstruction lasted until 1877. Citizens were attempting to rebuild our nation following one of the deadliest war in American History. In this time, the Fourteenth Amendment and Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution were ratified. Although slaves were freed, African Americans still faced intense racial prejudice and discrimination.
From 1865 to 1877 the country was under said reconstruction. During the reconstruction many voices felt the need to contribute to the improvement in any way that they could. For starters probably the biggest part of the reconstruction was the implementing of the Fourteenth Amendment. This Amendment prevented states from denying rights and privileges to any U.S. citizen. The American civil war occurred in 1861. This war marked a critical turning point in the United States history. The war pitted the northern against the southern states. The states in these two regions had different social, political and economic attributes. For instance, the North had a booming industrial sector whereas the South relied heavily on the agricultural sector.
The conditions of the south after the Civil War were devastating. Sherman burned a path from Mississippi to Georgia's coast. Military Governors seized vegetable farm lands and estates that were once beautiful. They did not have representation in congress until 1885. Before then they improvised for many years after the war.
The north had the goal of restoring the union during the Civil War, and the south made it very clear they were fighting to be respected as a country. With great happiness came great repercussions of a union victory and the country back together. Post Civil War the country faced issues concerning the Emancipation Proclamation on former slaves, the era of reconstruction, and deaths on both sides. There was a lot of rehabilitating to be put into action on both sides morally and physically. The Emancipation Proclamation declared slavery a moral issue, made it a focus of the Civil War, confirmed Europe 's rejection of the South’s war, and created new experiences for former slaves post Civil War.
For some background of the Reconstruction this name was given between the ending periods of the Civil War in 1877, as well as the final federal troops were getting out from the South . Although the actual procedure of the whole reconstruction did not start until the war ended, the idea of fixing the union had been there for a while back. Not going so far away in 1860 the Confederate states were in the process of actually seceding from the Union side, this made the Senate Crittenden react as an attention for a way to reverse back the process that had already started . As another idea came to mind to this followed by the proposal to an amendment for the Constitution guaranteeing the slavery side as to continue in any region it was already executed.(13th
Rebuilding the south won’t be easy when it comes to reconstruction after the Civil War I will do the following things. The three things are as follows: my first reconstruction assignment as Northern General is to rebuild hospitals for the sick and needy that was bombed during the war. This is important because hospitals are needed. The second thing is to fix on the churches that were damaged and the ones that were used as headquarters during the war for opposing sides. This is important because everyone need God on their especially during this trying time.
Reconstruction was a period of time dedicated to rebuilding the nation after the Civil War. The war ended with the South being defeated and their economy being devastated. Many Southerners struggled after the war with rebuilding their land and lives. The President and Congress had to decide the terms for which the former Confederate states would be permitted to join the Union. President Lincoln’s plan for reuniting the country was found in the Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction.
At the end of the Civil War between the North and South arose the Reconstruction era. This was a time period of the late 1800s where the united states, specifically the North started to attempt the rebuilding of the South. Abolitionists were eager to see the end of slavery and Lincoln attempted to end slavery. President Lincoln attempted to put in place the Emancipation Proclamation which stated all slaves in confederate states would be free. This was to weaken the southern states; except, the confederate states did not obey.
The American civil war led to the reunion of the South and the North. But, its consequences led the Republicans to take the lead of reconstructing what the war had destroyed especially in the South because it contained larger numbers of newly freed slaves. Just after the civil war, America entered into what was called as the reconstruction era. Reconstruction refers to when “the federal government established the terms on which rebellious Southern states would be integrated back into the Union” (Watts 246). As a further matter, it also meant “the process of helping the 4 million freed slaves after the civil war [to] make the transition to freedom” (DeFord and Schwarz 96).
The Civil War was the worst war fought on American soil to this day. Instead of working together to form one Union, the south wanted to govern them. The Civil War is considered a “Lost Cause”. This began the Reconstruction Era. Three very important amendments, known as the Reconstruction Amendment, were adapted.
