Immigrants and the Commercial Empire
The Puritan people of New England were very close knit. When the people married each other, it just added to the network of already connected families. Hardly anyone moved away. Everybody followed the rules of society and generally fit in. Family was a focal point, and provided guidance for every area of life, like education and religion. They did an excellent job of teaching their children and promoting literacy.
The puritan women of New England were in no way equal to men, politically or socially, but they contributed greatly to the community and family life. They worked hard maintaining the households, and as mothers, wives, and

These wars showed just how much Britain controlled the colonies, politically and economically. Britain raised taxes for the colonists, made more rules, and put more soldiers there. All these efforts by Britain just caused the colonists to rebel. This really raised the question of how much control Britain had over the colonists. The colonists ended up developing their own government, which only happened because the British rule refused to allow them to have any control, so their only choice was to rebel.
The wealthiest, most well-bred people in colonial America were the upper class. They came from money and aristocracy. People who were trained in a profession or had a business were middle class. Illiterate, semi-skilled whites were lower class. Then there were indentured servants and slaves, who had basically no rights. ‘New money’ would allow upward social mobility. Also, there was lots of land that could be acquired, and that allowed for economic growth.
Mercantilism was a way that the British kept economic control of the colonies. This way, the colonies would make money for Britain. The navigation acts and the sugar act were both laws enacted to restrict trade in the colonies. These acts only ended up causing corruption and rebellion, as the colonists tried to evade the
The french and Indian war altered the relationship between Britain and the colonies because they ended the policy of salutary neglect. This led to the increase of authority over the colonies. The debt from the war also lead to taxation without representation. Also they started to strictly regulate
During this time period, European colonies were exploring the world looking for new lands to conquer and colonize. The ideology of the time was mercantilism, which meant the strength of a colony was determined by the wealth of the colony. They would export the riches they obtained in their newly colonized land and export them for profit adding to their wealth. The European colonies also tried searching for faster trade routes, or land located along them in order to increase the profit they received from trades. New lands also offered new materials to trade which could allow them to dominate the trade markets.
In the 1600’s England was ruled by King Charles 1 whom was set on enforcing his religious views upon his people. These views were carried out through the Church of England. In an effort to escape the persecution and corruption in which they found themselves, two groups broke away from the church and fled the country. These groups consisted of the puritans and the pilgrims. They came to explore, to make money, to spread and exercise their religion freely, and to live on land of their own.
The New England colonies grew in the 1600’s with many of their ways derived from the Puritans. Socially, the importance of education which continues to this day was from the Puritans. The other side of this the treatment of the American Indians changed enormously. Politically, small town democracy was from the Puritans, but religion is removed from politics. Economically, agriculture economy is kept with the thought of wanting wealth is accepted.
• England’s highest goods in its competition with other European nations were a different economy and a sophisticated financial system that put trade at the service of the state. Parliament created a series of laws with the name of the Navigation Acts, to hold Britain and the colonies into a big and living, and trading empire. Colonial had raw materials brought into Britain while British manufactured goods were made to everyone on there liking terms to colonial buyers. • England obtained a policy called mercantilism, which is where the government is involved in the economy for the purpose of increasing national wealth. The main goal was to obtain a reasonable balance of trade within the empire as a whole, with exports outside of imports.
Influence of religious teachings: Puritan ideals promoted a complementary role for women as pious wives and mothers, emphasizing their moral guidance within the family unit. II. Consumption: Continuities: 1. Subsistence farming: Most colonial households engaged in subsistence farming, producing goods for personal consumption rather than commercial purposes. 2.
Puritans had their way of living their life and having their own beliefs. They even had their own way of how to dress, talk, and act. They adopted strict standards for admissions to their churches. The lifestyle of Puritans expectancy grew much longer than Old England and Southern English colonies.
This would enable legal trade with the other countries. This sparked the notion of the politically active population in the colonies to seek control of their political lives and for
In the Northern Colonies religion was a key component in the colonies more so than in the South. Also in the North temperature was cooler therefore the North had more white laborers. On the other hand there was far more slaves in the South than in the North. Most slaves in the South stayed with their masters then, while slaves in the North worked as artesian, shop keepers, messengers, servants, and general labors. During the 1620’s – 1670’s white and black worked and lived together.
In colonial America, white women and white men had two different and distinct roles, whether it may be the first migration, the transitional period, or the revolutionary era, women had to the responsibility of taking care of domestic matters. In the early colonial period, women had the expectation and role of ensuring the colony’s survival and longevity through childbirth and rearing. As new colonies emerged and the original colonies of New England and Chesapeake expanded, women were not only responsible for birthing children, mostly boys that will inherit their father’s wealth, now they were also expected for the moral upbringing of their children. Women, in predominantly patriarchal religious communities like the Puritans, had to raise religious
Salem Witchcraft The Crucible is set around the 1600’s and written by Arthur Miller. The puritans lived a very harsh but simple life. The puritans had very few values at the time, one of the values being ‘God’s Authority’. Their material values were more needs than wants, unlike today.
All in the Puritan community thought of females much like children in the way that they should be seen and not heard. These absurd rules were even in their bibles. Verses insinuated that women couldn't have their own minds and that they decision making process for everything should be left up to their husbands (Glubok 30). Furthermore rights were so limited that they were almost completely dependent on men: “A wife’s dependence became not only a matter of cultural, social, and legal restrictions, but necessarily of concrete economics as women moved from the households of fathers to husbands.” (Westerkamp 14).
The characteristics of mercantilism include economic, foreign trade, commerce and industry, population, factors of production, and commercial regulation. Mercantilism favored Great Britain because colonies had to exclusively ship their raw materials to them. However, mercantilism also favored the colonies because they would always have a market for their products, and protection from Britain. I believe the statement, “Mercantilism was actually more favorable to the colonies than to Great Britain” is more false than true because until America separated from Great Britain, colonies could not do anything but rely on their protection and
People think the Puritan women didn’t have enough rights and were unfairly treated, but some Puritan women enjoyed their roles. The Puritan women did not see their roles and bad things, but things they enjoyed. Taking care of the children and cleaning brought joy to the women. There were some women who disagreed with the roles they were given. These women were the ones who made history.
Although the British proved to be triumphant in the war, they lost a lot of money and a lot of soldiers. During the course of the years, Britain wanted economic relief and turned to the colonies. After the War, amplified British taxation on the colonies ruined the relationship that they had with the colonies. The British said the taxation
