Comparing Jefferson And The Louisiana Purchase

Being the president, Jefferson had wanted the recently gained land to be explored to be aware of what it contained. As a result, the United States' government provide money to Meriwether Lewis and William Clark for exploration. This was known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition which had taken place from May 1804 to November 1805 when Lewis and Clark explored the territory. Stated by Heather LeBlanc, “Along the way they charted trails, mapped river and mountain ranges, collected samples and wrote descriptions of unfamiliar plants and animals, and recorded facts about the Native American tribes they encountered along their journey.” The discovery of these untapped resources allowed the Americans to make profit by selling them to other country’s that did not contain them.

Two explorers under direct instructions from the President traveled with their crew westward and explored the Louisiana territory in search of the Pacific water route. The two travelers involved in this exploration were none other than Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Their journey was vastly known as the Lewis and Clark's expedition. President Thomas Jefferson commissioned this expedition shortly after he bought the Louisiana territory from France, which was also known as the Louisiana Purchase. Lewis and Clark along with their crew namely Corps of Discovery set out on the journey of finding the route on 18th May, 1804.

Jefferson attempted on several occasions to explore the west on his own, but it did not work out, so he asked his personal secretary, Meriwether Lewis to take lead in the expedition. It was on February 28, 1803 that President Thomas Jefferson won Congressional approval for the expedition of the Western lands that would become the adventures of Merriwether Lewis and William Clark.(1) A budget of $2,500 was allotted for the expedition of the group who were dubbed “The Corps of Discovery” by Jefferson. Jefferson was extremely interested in the western lands, so much so that his personal library at his home, Monticello, had more books on the subject than any other library in the world. (2) The group were to be led by Jefferson’s secretary, Merriwether Lewis, and Lewis’ friend William Clark.

In 1803 the French sells the Louisiana territory to America, which nearly doubled the size of the land owned by the Unites States in America. The president at the time named Thomas Jefferson sends two explorers named Lewis and Clark to go check out the new land purchased in the Louisiana purchase. Lewis and Clark were mapping out the land and looking for a waterway connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific, which would allow for better trade. They never found a water way but they did meet a woman named Sacagawea that was their saving grace. Lewis and Clark met Sacagawea while staying with the Mandan tribe during their first expedition in the winter.

Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and one of the prominent founding fathers of the nation, differed from the path set by the first two presidents. Jefferson led the Democratic-Republican movement and was the first president to be a member of that party. As the author of the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson clearly had a tremendous vision for the young country and was able to put his ideas to use in two terms in office. Thomas Jefferson led and strengthened the nation, producing results few could replicate. That being said, Jefferson also failed to succeed in major foreign issues, putting the nation in a quagmire.

The expedition set by Lewis and Clark on 1804-1806 to the explore the newly purchased Louisiana territory was a crucial moment in American history. The idea for the exploration was brought by President Thomas Jefferson on January 18, 1803. After purchasing the Louisiana territory from the French, he wanted someone to explore it before people can relocate. He asked Lewis to go on this journey and to find out everything. Lewis agreed and selected William Clark for an expedition that would make history.

Jefferson wanted Lewis to lead a group of people out into the west to explore as much land as he could. Among the men that were recruited was William Clark, an old friend of Lewis and the man that would share command of the band of explorers with Lewis. Why would a person have slaves then fight against it. He was maybe trying to show how there lives are or just to show an example of the everyday life of a African American slave.

He petitioned for all children, male and female to have three years of learing arithmetics, writing, reading, and history. Petitioning for this bill took great courage, especially because the government had been at its riches point. The United States doubled in 1803 after Jefferson purchased Louisiana territory from France for about 15 million dollars. Having just purchased this new land, Jefferson appointed his personal secretary Meriwether Lewis, who then enlisted William Clark to go scope out the terrain of the territory.

President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the Corps of Discovery to have the Lewis and Clark expedition find a waterway that could connect the United States for transportation because he had aspirations to expand to the Pacific and Northwest making the expedition important to his agenda for the United States. Another reason for the important expedition was to create a relationship with the American Indians, and the American fur trade, while learning the North American topography and geography of the land which was also important to the exploration (Corps of Discover, 2016). The Louisiana Purchase was the purchase of the Louisiana territory by the United States from France in 1803. The U.S. paid fifty million dollars and a cancellation of debts worth eighteen million dollars which averages to less than three cents per acre. The Louisiana territory included land from fifteen present U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. The territory contained land that forms Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska, portions of Minnesota, large portions of North Dakota; large portions of South Dakota, parts of New Mexico, the northern portion of Texas, the area of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. The Louisiana Purchase was smart move by the United States.

Jefferson’s dilemma in the Louisiana Purchase In April of 1803 Thomas Jefferson was faced with many moral dilemmas in the process of buying the Louisiana territory. Though the price for the territory was beyond generous, Jefferson felt that by purchasing the territory he would be going against his beliefs that the constitution should be followed word for word. The constitution said nothing of the president having the power to purchase land from another government, or to use money of the states for the same purpose (“the moral dilemma”). Another problem was once the land was purchased, there was a fear that it could have been a waste since they had no way to know the layout of the land, and what it would be useful for.
