In Shakespeare’s Othello and George Orwell’s Animal Farm, characters ability to manipulate others with ease is the flaw in societies structure, consequently, leading both works into tragic outcomes. This is done by blurring the perception of appearance versus reality, limitlessly committing to one’s desires, and taking advantage of others flaws. Throughout both novels, the villains mislead the other characters by forcing them to misinterpret what they see. This in result, allows the villain to gain obstructive power. In the play Othello, Iago manipulates the others by creating a scene within a scene. He sets up characters, by controlling what they see and feeding them lies. In the opening scene, while Iago is talking to Rodrigo, he reveals it would be weak to allow his external actions show what he is thinking inside. As he describes; "When my outward action doth demonstrate/ the native act and figure of my heart/ In complement extern, tis not long after/ But I will wear my heart upon my sleeve/ For daws to peck at. I am not what I am" (Shakespeare 1.1.67-71). His character …show more content…
They are unable to read and write which allows the pigs to get away with what they do. Covering up unethical new laws, squealer proclaims, "Tactics, comrades, tactics!" (…) The animals were not certain what the word meant, but Squealer spoke so persuasively, and the three dogs who happened to be with him growled so threateningly, that they accepted his explanation without further questions” (Orwell, 39). Pigs are generally known as smarter animals and use this advantage to cover up their actions, as well as, create an image of authority. The pigs are even able to make murder seem necessary by simply changing the commandments. When Muriel reads the commandments, “It ran: ‘No animal shall kill any other animal without cause. Somehow or other the last two words slipped out of the animals’ memory”
Shakespeare demonstrated this theme in a way that is very similar to that of Animal Farm. He portrays knowledge as a tool to manipulate others. For example, at the beginning of the play, Macbeth, the protagonist, is visited by three witches, who called themselves the weird sisters. At this point the witches use their knowledge of Macbeth’s fate to manipulate him and twist his mind into one of a
Discuss Shakespeare 's Use of Imagery in Othello to Reveal Character A lack of empathy makes for a true villain. In Shakespeare’s tragic play Othello, the nature of Iago’s character is revealed through the use of animal, plant, and devil imagery. Iago is revealed to view others as less than him, manipulating them with a lack of conscience, and having a desire for the destruction of others.
Untruths and misdirection’s are normal in the public eye, and numerous people veil their actual goals with a lacquer. In Shakespeare 's play Othello, the character Iago is the same as those tricky people. Behind his façade as a dependable ensign and companion, Iago is a multilayered, tricky and manipulative scalawag, coming up with disarray and bringing about setbacks toother characters for requital. Iago utilizes his deft and shrewd key demonstrations of control to undermine each character’s shortcomings. He misuses Roderigo’s love for Desdemona, Cassio under the appearance of companionship, and toys with Othello’s mind by playing on his self-question.
The satire present here is that the altering of the ten commandments effectively portray how the absurd the concept is. There is no way that animals could become, “more equal” than others. In the beginning of the novel, Old Major expressed that the animals shall overcome their oppressors, but the pigs become the oppressors. Through their chants and the ten commandments, the citizens are brainwashed to believe that everything is just and fair because when the commandments and chants were first written or said, everyone was in agreement, and believed it was fair. The pigs start to alter the propaganda, and the animals still believe that it is fair, when in reality it is not.
Many revolutions have similar characteristics whether they are non fiction or fictional. This is shown in the Korean War and in Animal Farm. Even though the revolution in Animal Farm is Fictional a lot of the characteristics to the Korean War or Korean Revolution are alike. Throughout the course of the Korean War, North Korea’s leader Kim Il-Sung, had similar characteristics to Animal Farm’s Napoleon, such as they were both dictators.
In the book Othello, Iago is a very manipulating man, throughout the book he manages to manipulate three main people, Roderigo, Cassio, and Othello. He uses all their weaknesses to bring them down. Iago wants revenge on Othello, because Othello overlooks Iago and his abilities, so Iago manipulates these three characters to get back at Othello in the long run. He comes up with a very good plan to get each other to turn against one another. So in the end he ends up getting what he wanted, revenge.
Iago’s intentions unveil themselves not only through actions, but through his engagement with the audience. “Iago’s self-understanding is well-express when he explains to viewers his plan to put a plague in Othello’s ear that will cause him to misinterpret Desdemona’s advocacy to Cassio.” (The Art) In order to commence suspicion within Othello, Iago utilizes the elopement of Othello and Desdemona. “Look to her, Moor, if thou hast eyes to see.
But as the months go on, the pigs change them to their benefit, giving them more power and luxury. The quote, “when the terror caused by the executions had died down, some of the animals remembered that the Sixth Commandment decreed ‘No animal shall kill any other animal’... Muriel read the commandment for her. It ran: ‘No animal shall kill any other animal without cause’,”(Orwell 98) shows that the pigs obviously change the commandment before the other animals got a chance to read it. This happens more times as the book goes on, and shows the pigs abusing their power by changing the commandments to fit their actions and desires.
The pigs broke rule number 4. “No animal shall sleep in a bed” ( Orwell 11) A little later in the same paragraph Clover asks Muriel if he could read the seven commandments. “ Muriel,” she said, “read me the Fourth Commandment. Does it not say something about never sleeping in a bed?”
Manipulation is shown in many ways such as politics, the media, misleading information and false advertising. To convey one’s thoughts to your own advantage is seen as crude and unnecessary. However, many people have their reasons in manipulating someone whether they are good or bad. In Shakespeare’s Othello, the concept of taking advantage of someone through manipulation leads to unnecessary, horrible events.
They say that is for their benefit, but really that they are selfish and they want the food and drink for themselves. Without it, they would not fulfill their duties. On page 52, the author states, “Do you know what would happen if we pigs failed in our duty? Jones would come back!” The animals are being put in the position is which they fear the one that abused they came back.
Power. It is the world’s most dangerous asset anyone can hold on to. It can be used for prosperity or for a complete destruction depending on the person. As the famous Lord Acton 's quote says, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Animal Farm stands for the best example that can display this matter in a clearer and funnier version.
In the play Othello, William Shakespeare creates an elaborate tragedy with various in depth characters, enhancing the story with powerful characterization. Iago, the main antagonist of Othello, exemplifies Shakespeare’s use of characterization to create in depth and complex characters. Using his manipulative nature, intellectual mind, egotistical attitude, and dishonesty, Iago controls the other characters in order to achieve his goal, leading Othello to succumb to an overwhelming jealousy causing his downfall. In order for Iago to gain control of the characters in the play, he manipulates Othello, Roderigo, Cassio, and more to believe false information and turn on one another.
Othello Manipulation Essay Manipulation is a potent tool and can easily be misused to benefit the manipulator, depending on the purpose the manipulator aims. While harming the ones who are subject to its effects, the manipulators gain power or authority by deceiving people or tricking them into seeing a certain point of view. Both in Shakespeare 's Othello and an article called “Are You Being Manipulated by a Social Puppeteer?” by Joe Navarro, manipulation is directly mentioned or shown through characters. In “Are You Being Manipulated by a Social Puppeteer?”, Joe Navarro (2013) describes the three major personality types - the Narcissistic (self-centered), the Predator/Parasite, and the Emotionally
