The Black Panther Party and Black Lives Matters are two movements that happened at different time periods in history, both wanting to approach the issue of police brutality towards African American individuals. Since both movements take place in two different time periods, the Black Panther Party happening in the 1960’s and the Black Lives Matter in present-day 2017, both have different and similar approaches along with goals in which they believe they can change the abusive relationship African Americans have with structural racism implemented by America. The Black Panther party in comparison to the Black Lives Matter movement had a list of tactics and end goals that they wanted to accomplish for their movement. The Black Lives Matter movement only had media coverage and no actual direction of where they wanted to take the movement also, not having a clear organizer or leader made the movement less effective. The Black Panther Party saw the African American community as not only targets of law enforcement but the American government in general. They wanted to form a community that would work together to protect and serve each other and some of the ways they did this was by creating programs that met the community's needs, followed law enforcement when detaining a African American individual to prevent the use of excessive force, educate their communities, etc. One of the Black Panther Party founders, Huey Newton made a document named the,”Ten Point Program”, where it outlines what exactly they wanted changed. This document not only asked for a fair criminal justice system for the African American community it also demanded better living conditions, education, and for African Americans to be thought as equal. In contrast to the Black Lives Matter movement the Black Panther Party movement had a stronger tactics and a stable objective which led to the Black Panther Party movement to be active for sixteen years, while the Black Lives Matter movement is struggling to stay active after about four years. Another reason why the Black Panther Party movement was effective was because they allowed for other groups to join and expanded their support to groups outside the United States.
