Comparing The Death Penalty In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

Innocent Characters that suffer in the book Of Mice and Men Not everyone has life easy. Someone people are great people, but are just in a tough situation. Take the book Of Mice and Men for an example. Many people suffer in the book. In particular three characters suffer the most.

George had to shoot Lennie. If Curley had shot him first, he probably would have died a slow and painful death. The police might have found him, and put him either in prison, an asylum or had him executed. Even if he escaped those fates, he would still be a danger to those around him. None of these outcomes would have been better than the relatively painless death he died.

In the story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, one of the main characters by the name of George fires the round of a Luger pistol into the back of his best friend’s head, Lennie Small. Without context, this would be seen as murder, as a crime. In this particular scenario, th George’s act was not murder, it was mercy.

As Lennie died, so did any lingering hope that a simpler and better life was out there. Having the dream of living alone and free did not even come close to making up for the memory of being forced to kill his best friend George now had to live with for the rest of his life and being stuck traveling from job to job forever and blowing his paychecks as quickly as he got them. Additionally, on Lennie’s part, although the last thing George said to him before he died was a retelling of their ranch plan, he would never make it to see that dream become a reality. According to the text “All the time he coulda had such a good time if it wasn’t for you. he woulda took his pay and raised hell in the whore house, and he coulda set in a pool room an’ played snooker, but he gotta take care of you” (Page#101, Steinbeck). This basically proves and enforces the reality that Lennie influences almost every part of Georges life. This also shows that George could have had a good life, even a better life if his dream of being able to take care of Lennie did not become a burden upon himself and influenced his life so greatly. Everything that George did or tried to do was always influenced by Lennie’s wellbeing.

First, let’s start out with the fact that Lennie and George were like family and George knew what was best for Lennie. They did everything together and George has always been there for him. Lennie said, “An’ I got you. We got each other, that’s what, that gives a hoot in hell about us” (Steinbeck 104).

George always wanted to get rid Lennie but, his bond with Lennie made it hard for him to ever let go. “We got a future”(Steinbeck 14) this quote shows how while George is a hot head, he cares for Lennie and always wanted him to know they were family and they had something to look forward to. George and Lennie’s past shows that George used to take advantage over Lennie, “I’ve beat the hell outta him, and he could bust every bone in my body…,but he never lifted a finger against me”(Steinbeck 40). Lennie could have smashed every bone in George’s body, but never raised a finger towards George showing that their bond was stronger than family. In Soledad California, during the 1920’s we find George and Lennie, the two main characters. Two friends that have a very unique relationship. George is a short man with sharp features and quick wits, where as Lennie is a big man with a round face and is a just like a large child. They are lowly workers that bounce from ranch to ranch looking for work, in search of their unique american dream. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George becomes more understanding and friendly towards Lennie through the beginning, middle and ending of the novella.

In the novella, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, George’s decision to kill Lennie at the end of the novel was justified. George and Lennie were best friends, and have been since they were little. They got ran out of Weed(the old farm they used to work at) for harassing a girl and not letting her go. He was just scared from her screaming and kicking. He didn’t mean to harm, or scare her.

George killing Lennie is justified. Lennie was either gonna get killed by the other men or George. The other men were only doing it because they hated Lennie, George would have done it for the sake of Lennie’s safety and mental state. George would have felt guilty if he did not handle it himself. One reason George was justified in killing Lennie was that George had realized Lennie would never get better and their dream would never come true.

On the other hand you can analyze the actions that George did and you can say that they were not very human decisions. George killed his best friend because Lennie killed a person and was going to get into more problems but nevertheless can not say that this is justified. George always told Lennie all the plans they had together, like buying a ranch, he was always keeping it with the expectation that they were going to stay together forever. This quote is an example of how Lennie and George looked happy in the future. "O.K. Someday- we 're gonna get the jack together and we 're gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an ' a cow and some pigs..." (Steinbeck 7).

Killing another seems very unjustifiable, which might be the case but when someone takes another 's life and sent to prison, death row or capital punishment is needed to put that person were they belong. People like that deserve to die because of their mistake of killing another and it deters other people to not kill others, showing them what would happen. In the case of Capital Punishment, Hunting for Sport, or George and Lennie, killing is a justifiable act. In the case of capital punishment killing is justified and needs to be done. For example, “Some crimes are so inherently evil they demand strict penalties up to and including death”(McClatchy).
