Can point of view change how you develop a character? By using first person point of view, the authors of The Georges and the Jewels and Black Beauty: The Autobiography of a Horse quite effectively develop each character. For example, if the reader did not know that the bit tasted bad and the straps were uncomfortable, he/she may assume that the bit was made for a custom fit for the horse and the mouthpiece tasted like strawberries.
First, in The Georges and the Jewels by Jane Smiley, a girl’s father has her ride and train horses even though she think the horses have feelings and don't like the gear and the training. Paragraph 10 states,”...I just took off the saddle, and the bridle, too, and I lay down in the grass and fell asleep...when I woke...there she was, curled up next to me like a dog, kind of pressed against me but sweet and large and soft...now when Daddy tells me that horses only know two things, the carrot and the stick, and

The author, Anna Sewell, says in the second paragraph,”...I knew my mother always wore one when she went out, and all horses did when they were grown up, and so, what with the nice oats, and what with my master’s pats, kind words, and gentle ways, I got to wear my bit and bridle.” Not only does this prove what the girl from The Georges and the Jewels thought, but it also shows the reader that the horse was young, but wanted to act older like his mother. In light of this evidence, the reader can conclude that first person point of view is very effective in developing characters. As you can see, by using first person point of view, the authors of The Georges and the Jewels and Black Beauty: the Autobiography of a Horse, rather adequately express the character’s notions, thoughts, and
It juxtaposes their two realities, further comparing the two and highlighting their similarities. Thus, enabling critical reflection on the dynamic events described. First person point of view not only acts as a tool to illustrate Nick’s life, but also serves as firsthand accounts of his complex internal struggle surrounding his relationship, or lack-there-of, with his long lost father. Nick feels somewhat guilty for his father’s life. He compares his relationship with his father to Dostoyevsky and an angry mob who killed him.
The novel’s setting takes place in 1949, around Mexico and Texas. The story begins in San Angelo, Texas, John Grady Cole’s home before the ranch was sold. When the main character starts to travel, he heads to Mexico. John Grady and Lacey Rawlins travel through multiple small towns and stay mainly in the wilderness. They eventually stop traveling at a ranch until they are arrested and taken to a jail in Saltillo, Mexico.
It also helps the reader understand what is happening in his life and helps us see through his eyes or smell what he smells. In conclusion, POV or first person can help the reader understand and connect with the
From Mexico to the United States, a very dangerous journey some take to have a better life or to reunite with their family. Even people who are as inexperienced, such as Enrique, go through this dangerous path to reunite himself with his mother. In the novel, Enrique's Journey, author Sonia Nazario uses literary devices such as theme, characterization, and POV to show us how events change a character along the way and reveals how a character truly is. Sonia Nazario uses theme to show us the drastic change in character, characterization to show us how the dangers of this journey has an impact on someone, and POV to show us how the character is someone else’s perspective.
In the Novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the author believes that It explains perspective because it can explain a lot of other people's feelings. For example from other people's perspectives they can get different feelings on certain things. In conclusion I think the theme and part of perspective is very important in all stories because everyone else sees different things because if everyone sees the same things that would make a boring story. One example from To Kill A Mockingbird that proves this is when the quote talks about not knowing a man until you know what they feel in their perspective. The author writes One time you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them.
Having point of views for all characters will give you every side of the situation that has happened. If you have these details it will allow you to know exactly what is going on. Now that the reader has the entire story instead of having half the story you can understand it completely. You can see the tragedies through the characters’ eyes and go through and can sort of live their life for a little while. When I was reading this story I felt like I was stepping into each character’s shoes and being able to experience the ordeal in this book
For instance, the author cannot choose their main character from a person who cannot see, touch, hear, taste, think, know or feel it. If you want to introduce something outside the range of your main character, you can use words or observed actions of other character who is in a position to see the events so that the reader can have the information that you want to convey. To be emphasized, the point of view character do not know others character’s thoughts or unspoken feelings. Reader loves to read using first point of view as they feel close to the character and can understand the storyline very well as they know the source of information here is the main
Point of view is an essential component of Grendel because it gives us a perspective of how Grendel sees the world. Having the ability to view the story from the eyes of Grendel gives the reader insight into how Grendel thinks, how he sees people, and how people see him. The first person point of view in Grendel reveals a deeper understanding of how isolation can shape one’s existence and change them over time. When Grendel was younger, he was a curious creature who was intrigued but terrified of the outside world. The first person viewpoint of the story allows us to see how the way the humans treated Grendel took away his innocence and isolated him.
In the passages “The George and the Jewels” by Jane Smiley and “Black Beauty: The Autobiography of a Horse” by Anna Sewell, the authors make both passages in first person. However, the authors also use the first person perspective to develop the characters. Both passages include a conflict of ideas between two characters, but they are also different in many ways. In “Black Beauty”, the author develops the character to make her overcome the problem, whereas in “The Georges and the Jewels” the author develops the character by making a problem that the character will have to solve later on in the story.
She’s judgmental and got exactly what she had coming for her; She’s the POV character from Shirley Jackson’s “The Possibility of Evil”. Third-person single vision is displayed through a narrator who is not a part of the story, and the main character, or the POV character, is the only view the reader can see; therefore, the character becomes more developed and the reader becomes more interested. Jackson chose third-person single vision POV for “The Possibility of Evil” because being in the head of only one character causes readers to have a closer connection with the character, all while maintaining suspense. When an author writes in third-person single vision, the reader gets an intimate look into the mind of the POV character, which works especially well when the POV character has a unique and different view than most. As some people believe, switching to omniscient is the ideal POV because the view of others needs to display how Miss Strangeworth’s letter fell out of the mailbox; however, since the author only switches once, third-person single vision is still the better option as it is implemented more throughout the story.
The use of first-person point of view, gave a better understanding of the thoughts coming from the janitor and how he analyzed 14-A’s mental condition throughout the story and used it against her. By using that point of view, the reader is able to dig into the janitor’s reasoning for wanting to mistreat 14-A as he had done. The janitor’s point of view has no limitations due to him being the main character and his being able to speak to the elderly lady in the story. Hinshaw uses the first-person point of view to reveal what is going on in the story, instead of not letting the readers know what is going inside of the main character’s mind. Not only is the point of view in the story important, but as a matter as fact so is the
