In an individual’s life utilizing the nine intellectual virtues can allow the person to acknowledge what they know about their thinking, analyze and distinguish between the knowledge, evaluate their ignorance, and reconstruct their perspective about the situation, task, or decision. For example, students can cultivate these traits regarding learning new material or coursework by using intellectual humility to distinguish between “what you already know from what you do not know.” It entails living in a routinely way by seeking knowledge of one’s ignorance, being aware of one’s biases and prejudices as well as limitations of one’s viewpoint and extent of one’s ignorance, and recognize that one should not claim to know more than one actually knows (Elder & Paul, 2012, p. 30).
