New Concepts
1. The first new idea that I learned was from page 27, chapter 2 of Deculturalization. This portion of the chapter reflects on the history of when Sequoyah created a Cherokee alphabet of his own ideas. “The genius of Sequoyah’s alphabet was that because each of the 86 characters matched a particular sound in the Cherokee language, it was possible for a Cherokee to quickly become literate in Cherokee” (Deculturalization 27). To me, it is so amazing to think that someone created an entire written language by themselves to make others literate in their language. He wanted to create a written language to allow a Cherokee to become fully literate in Cherokee like a European would be in their own language. When I was reading this portion,

My third new concept comes from the “Treaties Matter” online link from D2L. The piece that stood out to me that most was the tab on the left home screen titled U.S.-American Indian Treaties in Minnesota. This tab highlights on the idea of who gave what to whom which was very eye opening to me. I have always thought until I read this portion that the U.S. government was being nice to the Native Americans by giving them specific land to live on but that is not the case because the opposite is true. The Dakota and Ojibwe leaders gave up larger portions of their homelands to in return receive small reservations. The only reason that these leaders signed these treaties to receive back very little land is because they believed that this was the only way to keep their people alive. The lands that the Native Americans were previously calling their homelands were immediately sold and used for their resources (timber, mining, gold etc.) I like the quote under the Treaty Timeline portion that highlights this best as quoted by Ohiyesa, “The greatest object of their lives seems to be to acquire possessions-to be rich. They desire to possess the whole world” (Why Treaties Matter, How Treaties Changed Lands and Lifeways) I think that this another example of how we have been socialized to believe the Eurocentric perspective that is taught in textbooks. I have never heard of the opposite idea that the government didn’t reach out and help the Native Americans but only granted them a small portion of their land and took the rest. As a teacher, I want to include all perspectives for my students so they can see the world from multiple ways. I think it is important to hear about cultures and what they have overcame to fully appreciate and celebrate diversity. I want my students to know that to every story there is two sides to discover to hear the full perspective on a concept. Discovery of land brings with it the right to obtain title either by purchase or conquest, subject to the Indians’ right of occupancy. However, the treaty ending the American Revolutionary War transferred sovereignty and power of the lands under such transfers from the British to the United States. The land conveyance to Johnson in this case was made under English rule. The land came under American rule and thus the transfer to Johnson became invalid under American law after the American Revolution,. Additionally, the Indians had a right to annul the agreement with Johnson and reserve the land for themselves in the treaties between the Indians and the United States,.
In Chief Tecumseh’s speech, he describes the tyranny and conflict between the united states government and the native peoples. He explains that the natives should not sell their lands, for they have no right to do so because the land belongs to all people and not one group. Tecumseh shows this when he writes, “Sell a country?! Why not sell the air, the great sea, as well as the earth” (L. 30). The air, the sea, and the earth are priceless in the eyes of many, he parallels these three with the selling of a country to demonstrate how the natives value their land.
The French and Indian War altered the relations of the American Colonies and Britain through political, economic, and geographical issues. At the start of the French and Indian War the French owned a big majority of land but the during the war the French lost their land to the English. The Treaty of Paris in 1763 gave the English, the French land of North America (Doc A).
Native groups often took land and materials from weaker groups whenever it suited them. They understood the concept of ownership by conquest. From the time the first settlers landed on Turtle Island [America], the Natives were pushed from their home. In 1783, George Washington wrote a letter to James Duane, outlining principles of the Indian Policy of the Continental Congress. Washington outlined ‘an enlightened People’ would consider the Native to be deluded and that “as the country is large enough to contain us all; and as we are disposed to be kind to them and to partake in their trade…we will draw a veil over what is past and establish a boundary line between them and us beyond which we will endeavor to restrain our People from Hunting or Settling” (4).
The American Indians were suspicious if the people that had one demanded their land are now truthfully giving it back and welcoming them as one of their own. An example of this is on document ten. (pg. 686) As America expanded westward to pursue a “special ‘destiny’ to settle, develop, and dominate the entire continent,” they invaded the territory promised to Native Americans. (pg. 680, pg. 686) Promises made to Indians that they would keep and own their land in the West without worrying about trespassers were consistently broken by “buffalo hunters, miners, ranchers, farmers, railroad surveyors, and horse soldiers.”
The development of agriculture and the rise of industrialization generated new cultures and innovations in the new world. Native people in early America developed cultural distinct , men were in charge of the fishing, hunting, jobs that were more exposed to violence, and the women stayed closed to the village, farming, and child bearing. The way of life possessed by natives Americans did not compel them to conquer and transform new land. As opposed to European colonizers, Native Americans subscribed to a more “animistic” understanding of nature. In which they believed that plants and animals are not commodities, they are something to be respected rather than used.
“Benefits of Governmental Compromise Regarding the Dakota Access Pipeline” Nations all have unique governments and differences necessary for demonstrating successful leadership. Every country needs different assistance from their leadership, such as Rio requiring infrastructure or Somalia lacking political power. Some governments concern themselves with their politicians’ well-being more so than the people they lead, which creates a relevant problem in America. The United States Government can easily forget about Native American Reservations, or even ignore the people living on them. Recently, the United States Army Corps of Engineers has worked on the Dakota Access Pipeline project, which would cross over Native American ancestral lands,

As the song goes, "In 1492,in fourteen ninety two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." Before Christopher Columbus sailed to the New World, the Native Americans knew it as their home. Soon after Columbus reported back to let all of Europe know that he successfully found land, European settlers quickly followed. Every tribe was one of it 's kind, yet their cultures shared the importance of their religious practices, beliefs, and values . The Native Americans were generally very peaceful people, that is, until the Europeans invaded their land and forced them to fight back.
First of all, Native Americans were settled on a hotbed of natural resources which included oil and precious metals such as silver and gold. There was also much fertile land that would entice farmers and frontiersmen to move out west. On this land there was so much potential economic opportunity for farmers, cattle drivers, miners and many other occupations. The government developed the popular public misconception that the indians were misusing the land and that Americans had the right to take advantage of the opportunities that lie in the west. These ideas led to the Dawes Severalty Act of 1887 which authorized encroachment of Indian lands by the US government in order to divide up reservations and control Indian activity.
Ownership of land was the concept of private property that one person or group owned permanent, absolute control of a part of land. This was difficult to understand for many Native Americans because they have practiced a communistic land system for a long period of time. Land was not a product, perceptible, or an inert item that could be sized and sold. The Native Americans never established a structure or civilization of personal land ownership. Their land was not possessed by people and instead belonged to the community as a whole.
