I met with two other students at the festival entrance to assist in receiving canned food donations. We also provided coupons for the food donations as well as expressing a positive interest and thankfulness on behalf of the food bank. Food donations were boxed and stacked for collection at the end of the event for easy transport back to the food bank warehouse. Monetary donations were also accepted on behalf of the food bank during the collection event. We also provided answers to any question that people had in regards to the food bank or the festival. The assignment did not seem overly difficult but did have allot of interaction with the public so it was essential that we provided a very positive influence and genuine interest in accepting the donations along with expressing good …show more content…
Through the experience, I also gained a better understanding of service learning, volunteerism and community service while working with the food bank. I learned about the food banks purpose, mission and history and now have a much better understanding of the organization. In volunteering with the food bank, I was able to learn about food donations, distribution and the challenges in running an organization such as the one we were helping. Overall I see the value in contributing time and work to an organization that helps others in need. Many people depend on food donations and the service and work provided by many people of the organization are making positive impact in the

In addition to the fair, our facility also provides utilization of the grounds for community functions on a year round basis. Some examples are the annual Fireworks Show, Run for the Wall, food drive during the fair (3,500 pounds of can goods collected), use of the parking lot for school bus driver training, use of the kitchen for our local 4-H groups to hold their annual BBQ fundraisers, Blue Grass Festival, FFA Awards Dinner, wedding receptions, the Palo Verde High School Homecoming dinner and the High School Prom. In the past six years the fair management has worked hard to raise money by applying for grants and establishing a nonprofit 501 (C)(3) foundation.
Throughout my life, I have been quite active in several organizations. The first club I joined was the Hamlet Handy Helpers 4-H Club. As my project, I rented a farm and raised corn and soybeans with the goal to earn enough money to pay for my college education. I have learned a lot about business, finance, and agronomy through my 4-H projects. I have also learned how to confidently deliver speeches during the club meetings.
I feel that all the work that goes into the everyday set up and all the behind the scenes work to get the pantry ready for its opening days is all worth it. I feel that the work is paid off when you see how you impacted another human's life or even if you don't get to see what the items are being used for just knowing that you were able to help get the donations out is a great feeling. Working with the agency felt wonderful they took me in with open hands. I learned the ropes and was able to start helping ever since. All the other volunteers was nice and all seem very interested in the work that was being
These events provide students with the opportunity to make independent decisions and display leadership. Whether it be opportunities for students to volunteer for Freshman Orientation or Parents Night or any other student council event, they display academic and life-skills that will be of good use to them in their futures. Our events have always been successful and those who have been involved have been nothing short of impressed with our services. The canned food drive is a very popular event that we hold at our school. The friendly competition that the event creates is what allows us to be able to donate thousands of canned goods to our local food pantry on an annual basis.
It has been been a goal of mine to attend the United States Naval Academy after visiting Annapolis with my grandparents in 2012. Since visiting the Naval Academy I knew that I wanted to serve America with the utmost honor and integrity. The Naval Academy Summer Seminar would give me the ability to hone my leadership skills and give me valuable experience that I could use as a Navy Midshipman and throughout life. This summer experience is an opportunity of a lifetime because it will allow me to understand and benefit from the mental and physical challenges the academy provides. Challenging myself at the Naval Academy Summer Seminar would be greatly beneficial for me because I will have the confidence and skills to make decisions
Soliciting was a very gratifying experience because it exposed me to the willingness of people to help out the community. Volunteering at Evening for Habitat was another meaningful experience. These volunteering allowed me to see the positive impact that Habitat makes in the community.

For over thirty years, Community Lunch has worked with hundreds of volunteers to provide hot meals and other essential services to the community. They serve four meals a week – two lunches and two suppers – in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle. Meals are free and open to the general public. In addition to hot meals, they provide clothing, sleeping bags, gloves, socks, and toiletries, plus resources to apply for housing. Their work is best described by their purpose: “feeding the community, serving the community, creating community” (Community Lunch).
By volunteering, I was able to get more insight into the principles of servant leadership and practice my leadership skills. The experience has taught me a valuable lesson in leadership that people like leaders who lead them rather than leaders who manage

Assignment #2 - What does service mean to me? This is a concept that I have been considering in great detail. I have always loved doing community service and giving back to the community. However, I never thought of what my life would be like without community service. The definition of service based on the Oxford dictionary: "The action of helping or doing work for someone.
Volunteering is very important; it is both vital to the people receiving aid as it satisfies their needs, and it is important to those administering aid as it gives them joy and helps them become better people. The reason I volunteered for St. Margaret 's Fair was so I could finally stop sitting around and get to work. When I saw the opportunity to do something important, I grasped at it; I selected the ring toss game was because I felt it would be fun and important. I do believe my job at the St. Margaret 's Fair was very important as it both collected money for those in need and, at the same time, instilled me with a love of volunteering. The purpose of the fair was to collect money for humanitarian efforts in the local area.
Beneficiaries called to ask me if I wanted to perform community service at a cathedral in Dallas, TX. I agreed because I like to volunteer in any event when it is needed. This event was called “Feed the Hunger,” which I signed up for and looked forward to because of my desire to lend a hand and assist the needy and unfortunate. At first, I thought this event was just one of those other community service opportunities that I am usually called to facilitate and volunteer my time. However, in the end, this occasion was a life-changing experience.
