In addition to the fair, our facility also provides utilization of the grounds for community functions on a year round basis. Some examples are the annual Fireworks Show, Run for the Wall, food drive during the fair (3,500 pounds of can goods collected), use of the parking lot for school bus driver training, use of the kitchen for our local 4-H groups to hold their annual BBQ fundraisers, Blue Grass Festival, FFA Awards Dinner, wedding receptions, the Palo Verde High School Homecoming dinner and the High School Prom. In the past six years the fair management has worked hard to raise money by applying for grants and establishing a nonprofit 501 (C)(3) foundation.

Throughout my life, I have been quite active in several organizations. The first club I joined was the Hamlet Handy Helpers 4-H Club. As my project, I rented a farm and raised corn and soybeans with the goal to earn enough money to pay for my college education. I have learned a lot about business, finance, and agronomy through my 4-H projects. I have also learned how to confidently deliver speeches during the club meetings.

I feel that all the work that goes into the everyday set up and all the behind the scenes work to get the pantry ready for its opening days is all worth it. I feel that the work is paid off when you see how you impacted another human's life or even if you don't get to see what the items are being used for just knowing that you were able to help get the donations out is a great feeling. These events provide students with the opportunity to make independent decisions and display leadership. Whether it be opportunities for students to volunteer for Freshman Orientation or Parents Night or any other student council event, they display academic and life-skills that will be of good use to them in their futures. Our events have always been successful and those who have been involved have been nothing short of impressed with our services. The canned food drive is a very popular event that we hold at our school. The friendly competition that the event creates is what allows us to be able to donate thousands of canned goods to our local food pantry on an annual basis.

It has been been a goal of mine to attend the United States Naval Academy after visiting Annapolis with my grandparents in 2012. Since visiting the Naval Academy I knew that I wanted to serve America with the utmost honor and integrity. The Naval Academy Summer Seminar would give me the ability to hone my leadership skills and give me valuable experience that I could use as a Navy Midshipman and throughout life. For over thirty years, Community Lunch has worked with hundreds of volunteers to provide hot meals and other essential services to the community. They serve four meals a week – two lunches and two suppers – in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle. Meals are free and open to the general public. In addition to hot meals, they provide clothing, sleeping bags, gloves, socks, and toiletries, plus resources to apply for housing. Their work is best described by their purpose: “feeding the community, serving the community, creating community” (Community Lunch).

Beneficiaries called to ask me if I wanted to perform community service at a cathedral in Dallas, TX. I agreed because I like to volunteer in any event when it is needed. This event was called “Feed the Hunger,” which I signed up for and looked forward to because of my desire to lend a hand and assist the needy and unfortunate. I will be completing my service learning hours, with the CSUMB Educational Talent Search program, at Seaside High school located in the city of Seaside, California. My role as a service learner is to support and inspire high school students in their academic success.
