Encountering Culture Through the Eyes of Platt Imagine a world where people are living for themselves, thriving to succeed in their careers, working hard to accumulate wealth, and dealing only with issues that affect them personally. Picture a world where people are completely oblivious as to who created them, what He did for them, and what their true mission in life should be. In Counter Culture, author David Platt, brings to light different problems the world faces today. He discusses these various topics: culture, poverty, abortion, orphans and widows, sex slavery, marriage, sexual morality, ethnicity, religious liberty, and the unreached. For each one he gives real life examples of issues humanity experiences every day. But not only does …show more content…
In today’s human society, the definition of marriage has changed from how it used to be and what it means in the Bible. In the Bible, it is written that “the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God” (English Standard Bible, 1 Cor. 11.3). The Bible specifically mentions a husband and a wife, not a wife and a wife, or vice versa. God designed marriage to give people companionship, and so that they can provide others an illustration of their relationship with Him. Husbands are to love and lead their wives, and wives are to submit to their husbands. However, according to Platt, “this is not the picture of marriage that the world often perceives” (143). Some men don’t want to undertake marriage due to selfishness or irresponsibility, while some women fear or detest the thought of submitting. More and more people today put aside marriage for countless different reasons. The terms of marriage are changing in the world. Platt quotes Mark Regnerus noting that, “fewer than half of all American households today are made up of married couples” (Regnerus). God designed a man’s and a woman’s body to come together as one flesh in marriage, and afterwards the physical union of sex. Granted, marriage, nor sex is used to glorify God in the world today. Which brings up Platt’s next issue, sexual …show more content…
In Counter Culture, author David Platt sheds light on frequent issues people face in the world today and how all these issues revolve around the Creator. Humans were created not only by Him, but for Him; therefore, they should live each day to glorify Him. Included in each chapter of the book are a variety of ways people can help initiate a change and truly glorify God in the world today. “What might happen if we made Him our focus instead?” (xiv) Now, envision a world where people demonstrate love and compassion toward one another, and who are all in agreement as to what is right, and what is
W. Wallace Smith presented Doctrine and Covenants Section 150 in the midst of some unique challenges to the church. Richard Howard reminded us that the 1960s and early 1970s was filled with mistrust of church leadership. W. Wallace Smith provided this revelation in 1972 seeking to address these challenges and boldly reminded the church to “get along.” This revelation touched upon a variety of issues; leadership responsibilities, relationships, stewardship, education and training, monogamy, unity and differences.
Instead, a culture obsessed with the shallow idea of material success is taking the old culture’s place. He describes this fading away as a conflict
Marriage from a religious standpoint is thought of as a close union, “This union is so close, so binding, so powerful, so comprehensive and far-reaching that, as long as one
He uses pathos to show an emotion of hope, and he does it in a demanding way. In the speech, he wanted to persuade people the why create a world of hate and violence, when we can have a world of love and compassion. As the crowd listens, they recognize that this is the President’s Brother so they believe him more.
Schooling for the students Schooling systems have been the same since anyone could remember. What might need to change for students to get the equal amount of education as the “gifted” students? Will students still benefit from the lack of renewal in the education system? According to the authors from chapter 4 "How We Learn" Alfie Kohn, John Taylor Gatto, Bell Hooks, and Kristina Rizga, explaining in their essays published in "Acting Out Culture" by James S. Miller.
One of the more unusual cultural aspects that is discussed in Chinua Achebe’s novel Things Fall Apart is the existence of an ogbanje. According to a study of Igbo culture conducted by researcher Bertram I. N. Osuagwu, an ogbanje is “an evil spirt causing people to die suddenly” (Osuagwu 36). Some believe that the ogbanje are deities that enter the world and become human beings, but because of a promise that they made to the spirit world, they die early in their lives (Osuagwu 36). In Things Fall Apart, Okonkwo’s wife Ekwefi believes that she has been cursed by an ogbanje because of the abnormally high mortality rate of her children. Early in the novel, Achebe describes the hardship that Ekwefi has endured, stating “Ekwefi had suffered a good
With all the savagery that's occurring in our world today, from bombings in Syria, to shootings in our own backyards, it is time that we approach these problems from a different point of view. Instead of fighting violence with violence, fight violence with patience. Allow those committing violence to realize how absurd their actions are by showing them what actions they should be taking against something they don't agree with. Cesar Chavez reciprocates my thought. He acknowledges that our current strategy against violence has shown no real effect on the number of brutal acts committed against people.
”(Guy Montag and Mildred, 40) The sad part for Montag is that his wife who he has been married to for ten years doesn’t even remember where they first met. In the past 144 years the marriage and divorce rate has rapidly increased and decreased throughout the various wars and The Great Depression. Now most people would believe that the divorce rate is rapidly increasing but the matter of the fact is that are rate is lover than the 90’s, the 80’s, and the 70’s. Now marriage has its own problems because people will spend a month or two with someone and they think they are ready to spend the rest of their lives with them.
Marriage mainly matters not just based on the family structure but the stability and quality of the involved relationships. The funniest thing regarding marriage is that love belongs to every individual. Marriage is fundamental evidently because gay couples are fighting for recognition and legality of their marriages across the globe for the same reasons. This is based on the need to offer care and protection to the loved ones as well as developing a more in-depth understanding of family. Marriages are the source of families and without them, the bound and the relationships would mean nothing.
People want to get married because they are ready to take the relationship to a higher level of responsibility and commitment. The satirical argument made throughout the video is that one’s freedom is being compromised and ties, especially with the family are ruined once marriage gets in the picture. The video satirically highlights how individuals will not want to marry because of the huge commitments and responsibilities involved. This is ironic because, when it is decided that the goal of a relationship is marriage, it shows that the couple is ready to commit and love each other unconditionally.
According to this theory, nature of love is changing fundamentally and it can create either opportunities for democracy or chaos in life (Beck & Beck- Gernsheim, 1995). Love, family and personal freedom are three key elements in this theory. This theory states that the guidelines, rules and traditions which used to rule personal relationships have changed. “Individuals are now confronted with an endless series of choices as part of constructing, adjusting, improving or dissolving the unions they form with others” (Giddens, 2006). For instance, marriage nowadays depends on the willingness of the couples rather than for economic purposes or the urge to form family.
The film Lost in Translation follows two Americans visiting Tokyo during important transitional periods in their lives. Charlotte is a recent college graduate trying to figure out her career while also moving on from the honeymoon phase of her new marriage. Bob Harris is essentially going through a mid-life crisis as he sorts through life post-movie stardom and struggles to maintain a relationship with his overbearing wife. The two find each other in the hotel bar as a result of their inability to sleep and form a connection based on their mutual isolation in both their relationships and the city of Tokyo. The film touches on the importance of communication as well as what it is like to be a foreigner alone in a vastly different culture.
People should realize that marriage is the close union and equal partnership of a man and a

Is there really a need to be married anymore? Does marriage actually benefit your relationship, or is it an outdated institution that we’ll be better off without? In this speech, I’ll convince you that marriage is a thing of the past, and that society’s views on marriage have changed enough in the past decade that marriage really isn’t necessary anymore. One of the main purposes of marriage is to maintain a permanent relationship, but nowadays marriage doesn’t lead to a permanent relationship due to the increase of divorce rates.
