The Counter-Reformation was a movement set by the Catholic Church in order to remove Protestance, in turn hoping to stop the Protestant movement from continuing forth and allowing the strength of the Catholic Church to be restored to it natural state. This lead to many religious groups in Europe conflicting with one another as well as a rise of anti-semitic groups uproaring. Religious art played into this due to a reinforcement of ideological claims, many Protestant artists would show destruction of religious imagery within their artwork. During the fifteenth century the Catholic Church was in control of everything and believed that law was the way to keep order. Then, a reformer named Martin Luther came amidst. Although Martin Luther disagreed with the practice of indulgences, distrust in different powers through religions, and salvation through good works, he took action and wrote his 95 theses, affecting people politically, socially, and economically, all of which led to a reformation of the Catholic Church and new faith. In 1517, many citizens of Germany had many political views about Luther.

Martin Luther started the Protestant Reformation, and this was the beginning of many other religions. The 95 thesis is what began the Protestant Reformation which lead on to other things. He had the support from the people to back up his idea he just didn’t have the rulers on his side. He spread the word by nailing the 95 theses to the church door.

There were two major leaders that led the Protestant Reformation in Europe. The first was Martin Luther who wrote “95 Theses”, which were new religious beliefs, and nailed them to the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church. Eventually, he was outlawed and found refuge with Saxon princes, but his ideas continued to spread throughout Germany

The 95 theses is a list of questions and propositions for debate. Legend has it that on October 31, 1517 Luther defiantly nailed a copy of his 95 theses to the door of the Wittenberg Castle church. In essence, his Theses called for a full reform of the Catholic church and challenged other scholars to debate with him on matters of the church policy. The 95 thesis were to be used by as the basis for a discussion on this topic. It challenged the teachings of the Catholic Church on the nature of penance, the authority of the pope and the usefulness of indulgeneces.

How the Protestant Reformation Shaped Society     The Protestant Reformation is unarguably an essential part of history. It is one of the main reasons The Roman Catholic Church lost a lot of its power  back in the 16th century. Prior to the Reformation, The Catholic Church was extremely powerful and integrated into the government. Throughout the Middle Ages the church used strategic fear to keep its followers. The more the church grew, the more corrupt it became.

The Protestant and English reformation were both reforms that took place in the 16th century against the Roman Catholic Church. Comparatively these reformations are alike and different in some sense. For example, Two leaders led these reforms and went against the church’s beliefs for different purposes. For personal reasons , King Henry VIII went against the church, whereas Martin Luther knew the church could not offer him salvation amongst other reasons. Before becoming a monk, Martin Luther was once a law student .

Martin Luther is a German religious reformer who is well known for his 95 Theses, outspoken opinions, and starting the Protestant Reformation. Martin Luther played an influential role in reforming the Catholic Church and founded a form of Protestant Christianity, which is still being practiced today and is known as Lutheranism. Luther’s early life paved the way for the religious restoration he would become a part of in the future.

Throughout the high middle ages, the Medieval Church exerted power of a great magnitude. Not only did the church have religious power but also political as well. “The papacy asserted the Church of Rome as the sole authority in Christendom, a position strongly opposed by the patriarchs of the Greek Orthodox Church in Constantinople”. The Medieval church was also very wealthy. Throughout time the people have donated land to the church, making the church the single largest landowner by the end of the twelfth century.

The ideas of the Protestant reformation of the 1500’s had been in the minds of peasants for years because of the corruption of the Roman Catholic Church. Many people felt the clergy (church members) had taken advantage of the people, by becoming wealthy while the people were poor and hungry. There was also a rising sense of nationalism in Europe, that combined with the anger of the economic and political demands made by the Church, further angered the people. The church was spending money in many ways. The Pope was competing for political power in Italy, and had to fight off invasions from other countries.

John Calvin is considered one of the most important people in regards to the Protestant Reformation during the early-mid 1500’s. He was a pastor that took his job seriously and wanted to influence people to go beyond conformity and to try to grasp who God truly is, not just who others preached that He is. He encouraged thinking, not conformity. This new ideology, of course, brought about conflict between the widely prevalent Roman Catholicism of that day and Calvin’s personal conviction. The doctrinal differences mentioned in the prayers were part of that conflict.

These ideas prompted many Catholics into finally correcting the church themselves and seeking Reformation. Martin Luther became the leading figure of the Reformation because he had openly challenged the authority of the Pope and attacked the practice of indulgences in his “Ninety-Five Theses” letter. Several other prominent Theologians such as John Calvin and Huldrych Zwingli seized upon Luther’s beliefs and Reformation swept across 16th century Europe, leading eventually to

Since they had the support of the government, they began to torture and kill all who attempted to translate the Bible. The reason for which they did this was because the Bible had information in it that contradicted the long taught lies of the Catholic Church. If people had access to the Bible, then their power would be lowered greatly due to people feeling anger and disrespect due them teaching lies. They employed many tactics to make the translators of the Bible look like the real enemies when in fact the Catholic Church itself was. Sadly, in that time period, these tactics worked and the Bible Translators were shunned by society.
