Facts: Before dawn on August 21, 1983, Petitioner and other members of “Vice Lords” street gang became in rival fight with “Black Mobsters”. James Jackson, from Black Mobsters, went to the home where Vice Lords fled to. A second fight broke out with petitioner and three others from gang and severely beat Jackson. Vice lords put Jackson in a car, drove to a nearby street and left him face down in a puddle of water. Later that morning police found Jackson dead, where he had been left.

Being just in the American criminal justice system is a topic that is highly debated. Some believe the system is just, while others believe it is a flawed. The truth however, is that humans are not always right. God is the only who can practice justice in complete perfection, because humans are not perfect. Although many people in the American criminal justice system have good intentions, sadly that does not necessarily mean they are always just.

Melvin Santiago of the Jersey City Jersey Police Department was not simply shot in the line of duty, he was viciously ambushed by a man determined be a cop killer and, possibly, to commit suicide by cop (Kulbarsh, 2015). The attacker, Lawrence Campbell, age 27, assaulted an armed security guard inside the Walgreens pharmacy, took the guards pistol, told witnesses he was going to be famous (New Jersey police officer shot, 2014). Campbell waited in the parking lot for the first cruiser to arrive and opened fire on officer Santiago as he stepped out of his vehicle. Thirteen shots were fired, and Santiago was struck in the head. As the shooting was happening, other officers arrived and began firing at Campbell from their vehicles.

An investigative look into the NOPD cover-up, conflicting information, questionable police reports and activities, knowingly altering, concealing and conspiring. At one point the city was covered in water, no electricity, no radio for back-up, no way of communication unprepared for the storm that hit, they lost command and complete control of the police department. Suspicious deaths, premeditated homicide?

The Harris case is related to the course material because it illustrates the formal criminal justice process related to the court. Harris is being charged with a felony, which is why the case did not end in a plea bargain. The article also illustrates an instance in which discretion within law enforcement may be used. Hill points out that when investigating the murder the team failed to investigate other likely suspects.

Introduction and Summary: Chapter 11 focuses on the individuals with mental illness and the criminal justice system. Every year there are hundreds of thousands of individuals with mental illness who are arrested. The past decade a lot of the state hospital and mental health facilities have been shut down for lack of funding. Many of the seriously mentally ill are roaming the streets. The serious mental illness regarding this chapter would include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe depression.

1. Ethical concern. Describe and give examples of the concern. How is it pertinent to the field of criminal justice?

For my article I chose, “Decision Making in the Crime Commission Process: Comparing Rapist, Child Molesters, and Victim-Crossover Sex Offenders” by Eric Beauregard, Benoit Leclerc, and Patrick Lussier. In traditional beliefs it suggests sex offenders are mainly driven by an uncontrollable urge to sexually offend. This article takes a looks into comparing how rapist, child molesters, and victim-crossover sex offenders make their criminal decisions. It investigated how decision-making is involved in target selection. The researchers used mixed methods along with Clarke and Cornish’s decision-making model to evaluate the offender’s actions.

In the novel MONSTER, written by Walter Dean Myers, tells the story of two men under the age of 25 on trial for felony murder. Steve Harmon is a 16 year old boy who is accused of being the lookout to a robbery that James King, a 22 year old and his friend Bobo Evans were planning. James King is accused of being the one that ripped Alguinaldo Nesbit’s gun from him and used it to shoot and kill Mr.Nesbit. Prosecutor Sandra Petrocelli works to convince the jury that their age isn’t an excuse that a man died at their hands. Kathy O’brien and Asa Briggs both work as the attorneys to prove that one of these men are innocent.

There are many subjects in the book “The Essentials of Criminal Justice.” Through the fourteen chapters, the chapter I will be discussing is chapter eleven. Chapter eleven talks about the history of correctional institutions, jails, prisons, and alternate correctional institutions. In this paper, I will be discussing only part of chapter eleven. It will be discussing the history of the correctional Institutions which includes the following: the history of the correctional institutions, the origin of corrections in the United States, the development of prisons, the New York and Pennsylvania systems, and the comparisons of the 19th and 20th century correction systems.

Origin and History of the Criminal Justice System The Criminal justice system is a system that was made to control crime and make punishments to whoever break a law or rule. The beginning of the criminal justice system of the United States goes all the way back when the United States still belonged to the Great Britain. Americans were under Great Britain laws and rules and most of the laws were unfair. After the Revolutionary War and the United States became independent and they needed to create their own types of system to run their country.

There are three components that make up the criminal justice system – the police, courts, and correctional facilities – they all work together in order to protect individuals and their rights as a citizen of society to live without the fear of becoming the victim of a crime. Crime, simply put is when a person violates criminal law; the criminal justice system is society’s way of implementing social control. When all three components of the criminal justice work together, it functions almost perfectly. For a person to enter the criminal justice system, the process must begin with the law enforcement.

As defined in the book, Introduction to Criminal Justice, a prosecutor is “an appointed or elected member of the practicing bar who is responsible for bringing the state’s case against the accused,” whom protects the civil rights of the criminal defendant in the process of trial. Hence, a prosecutor is the most powerful person in the Criminal Justice system because of the rurality of a case settling in court. Thus, there are three types of prosecutors, whom shares the goal and the burden of protecting the civil rights bestowed in a nondiscriminatory manner. The first type of prosecutor is in the federal system, the United States attorneys whose main purpose is to carry out justice unbiasedly in federal court, and is appointed by the president. The second type, the attorney general is the chief legal officer who is also a prosecutor of each state, including the United States.
