The writings presented by Stewart and Teller present vastly different views on composition instruction. While Teller presents an argument that criticizes many of the techniques implement in a composition course, Stewart defends most of them. Both authors convey possible solutions to the problem, however, Teller, definitely presents an overtly pessimistic tone throughout the article. Assuming the blame for the failure of the students is one of Stewart’s main points, however, Teller shifts the blame from himself to the students and their irresponsible behaviors. I gravitate towards the points made by Stewart in the article. She looks for solutions to the problems while Teller simply critics everyone and everything except for himself. I want a professor that wants to help me become a better writer. In my opinion, Teller makes himself look like a pompous, arrogant individual. As Stewart points out in her article, “If students consistently fail at something in my classroom, it’s not their fault. It’s mine.” (Stewart, 2016) Conversely, Teller closes out his argument by saying, “If they show up, do the work, turn off their phones, they just might leave my class able to write a sentence.” (Teller, 2016) The idea of having a professor with such a negative of his students repulses me. I believe that Teller may be working in the wrong profession. While Stewart conveys a passion for teaching and helping students, Teller seems to feel that his students are incompetent and helpless. He arrives at the summation that most of his students will find his course arduous and boring. I cannot think of anyone that wants to be around such a toxic person with such a negative
Having never taken a college writing course before, I did not know what to expect and therefore assumed that I would choose my own topic to write about; of course, this isn’t the case. However, if I had the choice, I would not have chosen to write a response to Gerald Graff’s “Hidden Intellectualism”. After going through his essay with a fine-tooth comb, I have found a few flaws in his reasoning. Gerald Graff believes that schools and colleges are not taking advantage of “street smarts” by not using them in an intellectual setting when in fact, schools are providing students with a large assortment of other knowledge and skills. In Graff’s essay “Hidden Intellectualism”, he argues for the importance of changing school curriculums in order to better reflect the interests
“They’ll turn us into writing robots”, a student contends against the use templates influencing the structure of their essays. (10) In the book “They Say/ I Say”: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein insist that the use of their relevant templates provide tools that will enhance the readers writing skills. These templates provide an exemplary format that one can use when writing an essay. Graff and Birkenstein suggests that, “Instead of focusing solely on abstract principles of writing, then, this book offers model templates that help you put those principles directly into practice.”
As I was reading Melissa Duffy’s “Inspiration, and Craig Vetter’s “Bonehead Writing,” I found myself connecting with Vetter’s paper more than Duffy’s. I found that the presentation in “Bonehead Writing” to capture my attention, and that Vetter’s feelings about writing was similar to my opinion on writing. Through his wording and humor, I think Craig Vetter wrote the best essay. I find that the wording and presentation of an article or essay influences my opinion of the writer, and it affects how I receive the idea they are trying to present to me. Craig Vetter uses a blunt approach to convey his idea that writing is nearly impossible to teach, and describes writing as “A blood sport, a walk in the garden of agony every time out.”
This also leaves Dr. Neusner as a hypocrite and a liar because he stated, “Confronting difficulty by quitting leaves you changed” (Neusner), and his “pretense” was his way of avoiding responsibility. He also suggested that the students were irresponsible by stating, “When you did not keep appointments, we made new ones. When your work came in beyond the deadline, we pretended not to care” (Neusner). Despite his scolding assertions, Dr. Neusner’s persona and criticism were effective in pressuring some students to work harder than they had in the past. In his speech, Dr. Neuster employed various appeals to support his argument and to effectively produce his intended result.
In both articles, the teacher showed no connections with students. However, Wayman didn’t give up on helping his students but Katie did walk away from her class. Through the introduction, we can see Wayman is a good teacher and patient enough with his students. He understand his students and tried to help
Dobson’s words can resonate with young and older Christians. The politically correct, liberals, or the Christian left may perceive his words to be ungracious and condemning; whereas, the word of God clearly dictates acts that are sinful and should not be tolerated (Galatians 5: 19-21). Dobson challenges Christians to stand up as Jesus did since truth by nature is intolerant of falsehood. If being intolerant means agreeing with condemning abhorrent behavior as God mandates in the scriptures (e.g., homosexuality, abortion, sexual perversion), then yes, it is okay to be intolerant. Tolerance is not encouraged in the Bible considering God is not tolerant; ergo, tolerance in itself is not loving, since tolerance denies justice (Kruger, 2013).

Lucille Parkinson McCarthy, author of the article, “A Stranger in Strange Lands: A College Student Writing Across the Curriculum”, conducted an experiment that followed one student over a twenty-one month period, through three separate college classes to record his behavioral changes in response to each of the class’s differences in their writing expectations. The purpose was to provide both student and professor a better understanding of the difficulties a student faces while adjusting to the different social and academic settings of each class. Article Analysis: The Importance of Writing Badly Bruce Ballenger’s article titled “The Importance of Writing Badly” takes a rather peculiar approach to addressing the issue of effective writing. The author eccentrically argues for the importance of ‘bad writing’ by describing different reasons to support his arguments. He argues that it is normal to apportion blames without understanding the root causes of poor writing skills. The author quotes different people who have expressed concerns about poor writing among students including his doctor. He proceeds by explaining why he would encourage his students not to concentrate on their poor writing experiences.
Serving the Audience Lazy, entitled, and narcissistic are just some of many cataloged adjectives used to describe the most recent generation of students. Clive Thompson, a well-credentialed journalist, makes a casual attempt at removing these damaging preconceived views that the young people of today face and challenge daily. However, the succinctness of his piece, “On the New Literacy,” allows the writing to unravel quickly, pulling apart at both ends by committing logical faux pas. Thompson pleads his case based on the study of a Stanford University professor of writing, Andrea Lunsford, titled “The Stanford Study of Writing.”
Tawney Nodland – As I look back over the past semester of English Composition, I realize that I have grown as a writer. Not onlyhas my understanding of the writing process changed, my whole attitude towards composition has too. This composition course has made a significant impact on my learning experience and has given me tools to take forward into my future educational and professional goals. Throughout this course, I have discovered things about myself as a writer and know some of my strengths and weaknesses. I now feel more prepared for future writing assignments, whether for work or for school.
Over the course of the semester, my main goal was to become a more precise writer and develop my identity as a writer. According too, the Portfolio Letter assignment sheet, becoming a better writer consists of precise planning, draft and revising. It also includes understanding a variety of academic genres by examining the basic characteristics that defines each type. In order too efficiently meet my goal of becoming a better writer, it was very important to have my work evaluated by others and myself as well. The use of rhetorical knowledge, critical thinking, reading and writing all are the important aspects in this course.

The talk aims to challenge the education system and the fact that it has little emphasis on the creativity of individuals. Robinson effectively brings to mind the inadequacy of the education system by addressing its failure in equalizing the importance of all subjects and developing different types of intelligence.
