“When humans act with cruelty we characterize them as ‘Animals’, yet the only animal that displays cruelty is humanity”( Anthony Williams). If animal had the intelligence of humans, they would be no different from mankind. “The creature outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which (Animal Farm 141) In reality humans and animals are similar in their cruelty and virtue. In The Animal Farm by George Orwell, Napoleon the pig symbolizes Joseph Stalin. Napoleon was a vicious and cruel tyranny leader. ‘ When they had finished their confession, the dogs promptly tore their throats out”(84). If Stalin found anybody rebelling against him or might cause an issue in his society, he would have them executed. In the end of both Stalin and Napoleon’s lives, they lived in paranoia. “He carried a whip in his trotter”(133). Neither one of Napoleon nor Stalin handled the paranoia well. They lived in fear and would destroy anything that could possibly be a threat. Napoleon had a very negative outlook on life, so he could not see anything as it really …show more content…
Boxer is one of the many example of a virtuous being in The Animal Farm “‘Napoleon is always right’ in addition to his private motto of ‘I will work harder’”(56). Boxer has great faith in a leader who is unfaithful to his companions and to his people. Anything could happen to Boxer and he will still work his hardest. Boxer would do anything to please anybody, including Napoleon. “It is my lungs” said boxer in a week voice. “It does not matter”(119) Boxer is lying on the ground dying and yet he does not care. He only wants the others to be happy and to live good lives in freedom. All animals and people have a kind of virtue about them. People all want to please those around us. It can make humans or break them. if we can find the right people to
In this paper, I will focus on Bonnie Steinbock’s claim on whether or not we should give equal moral consideration to species outside our own species group. I will first determine what moral concern means, according to Peter singer, and explain how he views the human treatment of animals. I will then outline Steinbock’s argument against Singer’s position and explain how her criticism is part of a much broader issue: that is moral concern. I will finally make my argument against Steinbock as well as address any issues she could possibly raise against my argument. Peter Singer believed that all species, whether it be human or non-human, deserve equal consideration of interests and quality of life.
“When humans act with cruelty we characterize them as ‘animals’, yet the only animal that displays cruelty is humanity,” said by Anonymous. Joseph Stalin shared the same characteristics as Napoleon from the book, “Animal Farm”, by George Orwell, showing that an animal can be a real person. When Joseph Stalin and Napoleon were elected to be leaders, they caused fear because they would eliminate anyone who got in their way, they changed the ideas of the revolution just for the benefits of themselves, and they gained power by manipulating and using their organizations to convince those among them to follow their industrial plan. Therefore these are some ideas that Napoleon and Joseph Stalin show that an animal can be like a real person.
In George Orwell's Animal Farm, Napoleon, a pig leader that represents Stalin from the Russian Revolution plays a big role in the book as the pig leaders are a superior group among the population of Animal Farm. In the story Napoleon is representing Stalin in Animal Farm as the main leader after Mr.Jones is ran out of the farm and Old Major died, resembling how Stalin took over rising to power in Russia. Napoleon started as a seemingly good leader but that soon changed… Napoleon, just like Stalin started to have problems with citizens of their own community and tried to hurt people and take things away. Both leaders can be shown using their superiority and power to their advantage to get everything they wanted and felt was necessary.
Juliette Blalock Singh 4/5 Animal Farm In the satiric novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, the character Napoleon represents a dictator in society, who turns a self-governed and unbiased farm into his own. Napoleon initially unifies with the rest of the animal’s, but soon decides to take matters into his own hands and disposes of Snowball and his proposals towards the farm. He takes advantage of the vulnerable animals so he can become in command. Napoleon is clever, brutal, and dictatorial to the animals.
They are more like us than we imagined…” these words written by Jeremy Rifkin in his article “A Change of Heart about Animals,” emphasize that like us humans, animals feel pain as well. Equivalently, Rifkin insists on the point that we need to change our ways in which we treat animals or in other words limit ourselves to a certain level of fair treatment with them. Alike us, they feel pain and suffer in many ways in cause of our actions towards them and it is not fair for an animal to be attacked this way by us humans when they as well are living their own lives and are already trying to survive themselves. In support of this, I am with Jeremy Rifkin and agree that our actions towards animals need either a change or limit. Researchers have found that animals feel pain, suffer, experience stress, affection, excitement and even love.
In Animal Farm, George Orwell warns how power will often lead to corruption. Napoleon was placed in a position of power after Major died, and he slowly starts to lavish in his power and become addicted to the lush life of a dictator. When Napoleon first becomes a leader, he expresses how everyone will work equally, but as his reign goes on, he shortens the work hours. At the very end of the novel, the observing animals even start to see that pig and man had become the same. The irony present in the above example, illuminates how regardless of how much a ruler promises to maintain equality and fairness, the position of power that they hold, will corrupt them.
Napoleon who was in control in Animal farm is similar to Joseph Stalin. One similarity between Napoleon and Stalin is they would eliminate anyone who would disagree with them or rebel against their rules. In the book Animal Farm Napoleon gets rid of Snowball because they didn't agree on what to do for the farm and he was worried all the animals would side with Snowballs ideas not Napoleons. In the book it states, “They dashed straight for Snowball, who only sprang from his place just in time to escape their snapping jaws,” (Orwell 53). This shows that napoleon felt threatened by Snowball and was worried he would take over the farm so he used his dogs to try to kill Snowball so Napoleon could have no choice but to rule the farm.
When first reading George Orwell’s Animal Farm, one might assume it to be a simple narrative about Farm Animals. However, through closer analysis, you begin to see the allegorical connections and satire of the work. By drawing parallels to certain major events and individuals from the Russian Revolution, Orwell is able to provide a political commentary about the harsh conditions caused by the Revolution. In George Orwell 's Animal Farm, he uses Napoleon, Snowball, and Mr. Jones to show the allegorical connections, as well as its satirical motives.
Furthermore, Napoleon gives the other animals the impression he was the sole leader of the rebellion on Animal farm and makes Snowball -a leader who wanted what was best for the animals- seem like an enemy who was in cahoots with Farmer Jones since long before the animals took over the farm. Napoleon and Squealer (another “fat cat” pig.) always put the blame on Snowball whenever something went wrong in the farm to avoid having the blame fall on them. Napoleon is an exemplary example of just how selfish and hypocritical people can be in furthering their own aims because he continued to subtly but purposely change the seven rules put in place as the pillars of animalism. For example, Napoleon and the other pigs move into Farmer Jones’s house and sleep in his bed after commanding “No animal shall sleep in a bed”, so he changes the commandment to read “no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets”.
Elizabeth Lee Mrs. Clarke English 9 BLOCK 16 March 2015 The Power of Greed As the animals soak in their own sweat, they rest in deep thought on the mounds of dirt in the fields of England, where the dictatorial Mr. Jones had once ruled before he died. A new leader named Napoleon has come into position after his death.
In Animals Farm, there is a pig who’s name Napoleon. This character did not contributed to the society with his actions. In effect, he did not respect the concept of “Animalism” which is the equality of all the animals. He did many actions that broke this conception during the entire story. At the beginning, Napoleon, take the farm with Snowball when the farmer, Mr. Jones, left.
“Animal Farm” by George Orwell, is a story to show how absolute power corrupts, just as Stalin’s power did during the Russian Revolution in 1917. In the allegory “Animal Farm” each character represents a political figure from the days around the Russian Revolution. For example, Joseph Stalin is represented by a pig named Napoleon, Squealer, another pig, represents Stalin’s propaganda department, and the dogs represent the Secret Police (KBG). Using the nine dogs that Napoleon raises (intimidation), Squealer (propaganda), and manipulation, Orwell illustrates how Napoleon was able to gain and maintain control of the farm. The nine dogs that stay by Napoleon at all times are useful for Napoleon to gain and maintain control of the farm because they scare the other animals, intimidating them so that they do not disobey Napoleon.
George Orwell portrays Napoleon as Stalin in many similar ways. Just as some leaders use dictatorship to control political aspects, pigs also use dictatorship to control animals. Animal Farm uses characterization to suggest that although cruel leadership can be effective, it will lead to
Using the examples of Napoleon and Boxer this essay will discuss the truths of human nature and express the traits of these characters both good and bad including; loyalty and obedience as well as selfishness and greed. Napoleon represents the corrupt political dictators that have been in power before and even after the novel was written. He slowly and subtly put himself into power of the farm and was very manipulative in the way he got there. The animals were always ensured that everything he did was for the good of the farm but as the book goes on Napoleon’s hunger for power is revealed.
Published in 1945, Animal Farm is a satirical dystopian novella written by English author George Orwell, and is perhaps his best known work. An allegorical tale, Animal Farm tells a literal story - of the animals on the farm - that is intended to be representative of another situation - Stalin 's rise in the Soviet Union. Animal Farm opens on Manor Farm, where animals are subservient to their human master, a farmer named Jones. One night an aged boar called Old Manor calls a meeting of his fellow animals, and puts forth the call that they should one day rise up in rebellion against the humans who enslave them. Old Manor suggests that once humans have been overthrown, no animal should act like a human by sleeping in a bed, wearing clothes, drinking alcohol, or engaging in trade.
