ESSAY # 2 10/04/2017 Rough draft COMPARE AND CONTRAST MY LIFE BEFORE IN CUBA AND NOW IN MIAMI. My life before I came this country was in Cuba. But I decided to come for a better future for me, and my family.

The article is called Mental Health Among Adolescents from Returned Portuguese Immigrant Families. Because of consistent changes in Portugal and in their previous community researchers believed that these changes begin to affect the mental state of children. The article looks at the risk factors of what affects the children. The researchers worked with 360 students. These students were immigrants that had to go back to Portugal.

Mental health is a state of psychological well-being. According to World Health Organization (WHO) mental health includes "subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence, intergenerational dependence, and self-actualization of one's intellectual and emotional potential, among others." (Organization, WHO 2001) However, cultural differences, race, ethnicity, personal background, subjective assessment, and socioeconomic status all affect how mental health is defined. This variation in definitions of mental health between different sects of our society further causes drift in methods of treatment, and may cause the burden of mental health to be greater on some cultures.

Being a Cuban immigrant has provided me with a unique bicultural perspective that has become my support system in the United States. For the first eleven years of my life, my culture was composed of music and dancing. In every street corner of my hometown, there was a group of seniors playing domino and close by, their grandchildren dancing to the Salsa music being played on the radio to pass the time. The hardships created by the communist regime are overshadowed by memories of my mother teaching me how to sew and by my paternal grandmother teaching me how to enjoy a strong Cuban coffee. Those precious memories of home became a source of pain when I migrated to the United States.
