Dark Romanticism evolves from works of the Romantic Period (1798-1870) with characteristics of horror fiction and death. It is taken as a reaction of the Transcendental Movement, which originated abreast the Romantic Period from 1830 to 1860. Known writers like Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, and Nathaniel Hawthorne found that the ideas displayed in the Transcendental works were idealistic and rose-colored, as a result, they opt to alter these works adding their own element hence this was the birth of the subgenre.
To explore more about this subgenre we have three Americans mentioned above that are considered as major Dark Romantics authors.

He took into consideration many elements to ensure his works reached a point where the reader would feel awestruck and could feel the many feelings pictured in the writings. Poe’s characters and stories were represented often by the rejection of the rational, a characteristic of the Romantic era, exchanging it with intuition and emotions. In "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", considered the first detective story, Poe introduces us to Auguste Dupin. Dupin, throughout the story, tries to constantly think like the criminal, following his intuition in order to resolve the crime. The display of emotions in his stories is what draws the attention of the reader. Most of the narrations like in "The Black Cat" give a sense of irrationality. Hatred, melancholy, woe and distress, his characters rely more on the human side showing their mental state, taking his stories to have a bigger impact on the reader’s minds. This is attributed to the period where his works were written, as stated earlier. Poe’s usage of resources like dark atmospheres, messing around with the time in which the story is represented, this was most commonly used to alter reader’s ideas of the perfection and the beauty and divert them more to the contemporary side. He liked to mix different settings with times who were most likely to confuse the reader’s perception of it, making his stories more suspenseful. Poe’s characters had something in between, parts or their full names weren’t ever mentioned. He believed the real emphasis should be put in the emotions of the character, not in the identity. This is the case of "The Pit and the Pendulum" where the base of the story is the representation of characters fears not knowing the name of the same. Lastly, the real sense of Poe’s writings was the expectation of the unexpected. He

American Life today is reminiscent more of the age of The Romanticism period the first reason how American life today is still being reflected towards The Romantic period is through the values of the founding fathers. They took the basic ideas from The Romantic period that includes the ideas of vision and historical change. These basic ideas are still being represented every day in America that we are always a changing country, that we are always developing and that our people are the most important part of our country, these basic ideas we are still practicing 241 years later in America. The second reason The Romantic period reflects modern American life is through art and literature before the Romanticism period, books and art were written
The Style of Poe Analysis In “The Tell-tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe, the demented, arrogant and dark tones reflect the man’s guilt and insanity that eventually leds him to admit to the crime he committed. Poe’s diction heightens the arrogant tones which is seen as the man plans the murder and carries it out in a careful, organized way. He goes “boldly” into the chamber, “cunningly” sticks his head in the doorway and feels “the extent of his own power”. Poe’s use of diction shows how cocky the man actually is.

Romanticism is a type of story that finds inspiration in myth, legend, and folk culture. Following this principle, Washington Irving has written many stories about romanticism. These stories include, “The Devil and Tom Walker” and “Rip Van Winkle. Irving’s stories, “The Devil and Tom Walker, and “Rip Van Winkle” both show traits of romanticism because they both include the supernatural realm, youthful innocence over sophistication, shunning civilization, and folk culture.
If Poe’s intention are to scare the reader, then he is going to do it. As an author, he wants to use rich detail to really protrude his ideas of the story being
More specifically for Poe, the makeup of the home in the “Tell Tale Heart” creates a dark mood for the text. “His room was as black as pitch with the thick darkness, (for the shutters were close fastened, through fear of robbers,) and so I knew that he could not see the opening of the door, and I kept pushing it on steadily, steadily.” (Poe). The setting displays a type of darkness and horrific sight. Through the vocabulary such as black and thick darkness this is clearly displayed.
American Romanticism were mostly written during the 1800’s. The use of American Romanticism was to get readers to read. The authors would exaggerate stories to get them attached and start reading them. American Romanticism were stories that were mostly gothic or dark stories. The death of a protagonist is usually over exaggerated.
There is always something that bothers us in life, whether it’s others or even our own conscious. In “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator has a difficult time following through with his cruel acts because a part of him knows it’s truly wrong. Throughout the story, his crimes bring more tension between him and the old man. Suspense is created with his every move, leaving readers hanging on the edge of their seats. In “The Tell-Tale Heart”, Poe builds suspense by using symbolism, inner thinking, and revealing information to the reader that a character doesn’t know about.
Poe tries to evoke suspense in the reader's mind by using several different
One of Edgar Allan Poe’s most known attributes is his use of fear in many of his stories. He used words and images to instill the fright into his readers. He strung together scenarios that happen to his characters that encapsulates real fears that a reader could have. Poe would use fear in his stories in multiple ways. A story could relate around a certain fear.
“A drowsy, dreamy influence seems to hang over the land, and to pervade the very atmosphere. Some say that the place was bewitched by a high German doctor, during the early days of the settlement; others, that an old Indian chief, the prophet or wizard of his tribe, held his powwows there before the country was discovered by Master Hendrick Hudson.” Washington Irving wrote The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in 1820. It is about a teacher, Ichabod Crane, who is chased away by the headless horseman.
Though Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories like, The Cask of Amontillado, to his poems like, The Raven, Poe’s shows his writing style to use physical imagery and connotative syntax to show ,imagery in his writing. Throughout his life, Poe had always lived through the most chaotic and evil of time. His parents died while he was 3 years old. After his parents died, he lived with another family member who never accepted him as their own son. Later on in life, Poe had served in the military and at that point he started writing poems.
During the 1800s Dark Romanticism, sometimes referred to as Gothic Romanticism, entered the world of literature. Unlike the writings before this time, Dark Romanticism showed the sinful thoughts that had not been previously shown in the world. Unlike the previous fiction stories or novels such as fairytales that used creative, positive stories to escape reality, these dark and sometimes supernatural writings eluded reality by taking its readers into disturbing and sometimes sacrilegious situations. Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne both used symbols to illustrate elements of Dark Romanticism. The symbols within the stories of these great writers revealed the impending darkness and gloom that characterized Dark Romanticism.
conforms to and frustrates what we traditionally expect from the genre. Poe shaped the genre of detective fiction - although he preferred to call them “tales of ratiocination” - after introducing Detective C. Auguste Dupin. Dupin analyses unsolved mysteries and uses his advanced cognitive ability to deduce information to solve cases; thus, a new genre was born. To describe how Poe’s short stories both comply with the general expectations of detective fiction and how they defy them, I plan to examine The Murders in the Rue Morgue and The Purloined Letter.
