David Sedaris’ short story “Us & Them” is a high comedy that uses irony and wordplay to convey the idea that just because someone isn’t exactly like you doesn’t mean you can be rude to them. In this story, there are many examples of word-play.

1. Irony as we talked about in class is considered to be intellectual or a sort of dry humor. It also has a double meaning, where you say one thing but the opposite meaning is implied. For example, in the reading “SantaLand Diaries” David and another elf realized that Santa is an anagram of Satan. So they would substitute the word for Santa by using Satan in front of customers.

An example of irony in the section about the students is the idea of what is good or bad. As its states, “Students throw out many good things, including food” (Eighner 110). Presumably, food is thrown out because it is bad and is unfavorable to the student, however; Eighner finds that the student throwing out food is a good thing because it is favorable thing to him and others. David Sedaris portrays humor throughout “Us and Them.” Humor establishes an entertaining environment and gives the readers joy, drawing them in with comedic writing.

“Us and Them“:Analysis In David Sedaris writing piece “Us and Them” can be said to be a strong text talking about a young boy’s interest of a non technologized family that differentiates from a normal american family .Sedaris discusses a family moving to a different towns in the narrative. In Sedaris writing a young boy in that family had a curiosity about the daily life of his neighbors known as the Tomkeys, as they were known for being strange from a normal family. The Tomkeys family was known to be different as simply as they did not believe in television. The young boy found amusing ,always spying on the tomkeys daily life , as it was like a television show for him .

Readers, mainly parents, will begin to reminisce about their child begging for the candy bar in the checkout line. Steingraber allows her readers to be in her position, and this will have them to understand and accept her argument much more efficiently. She continues to share relatable stories to the reader by applying sarcasm and humor as she says, “Well, this is a watershed moment in parenting, I thought, as I handed each of my hungry children a little red and yellow sack, warm with food” (Steingraber).

This shows the change David has made with his views and choices. In the beginning of the book, David wished for extra arms as a harmless joke only to realize that making that joke costed him and got beat by his father. David then kept quiet as he didn’t want to express his own feelings due to trauma he has suffered. By the end of the book, David runs away with his friends in protest to his father’s rules and to express who he truly is. From the beginning of the book to the end, David has shown examples of him changing who he is as a person for the better.

The irony used in the prompt is mostly directed towards the relationship between Phil and his family and how his work life affects that. For example, Phil “dearly beloved” his children, who according to Goodman, had barely even spent time with their father, “asking the neighbors what he was like.” The irony of showcasing this predicament contributes to Goodman’s sympathy towards Phil’s family who never really got to know him and for Phil who spent his time working instead of with his loved ones.
