What lead the colonist to turn against their mother country that some loved so much? The mother country was England and they wanted the new world to stay with them because they were making a lot of money of the colonist. They were taxing the colonies where ever they could so they could take more money away from them and to try to keep them in check. There were many different taxations that were forced upon the colonies that made the angry with their mother country and they were the sugar act, currency act, stamp act, quartering act, declaratory act and the tea act. This law was put into place because the colonist were buy of merchants so they did have to pay the high taxes on molasses. Which back fired on them because the British lower the tax on molasses because Lord “Grenvile took measures that the duty be strictly enforced. The act also listed more foreign good to be taxed including sugar, wine, coffee, cambric, and lumber”(U.S History). This drove the some of the colonist crazy because now they were being taxes on more things that they had to buy in order to survive in the new world. Once this law got put into place into place it slowed down the economy of the new world. Before this act the colonist were buying tea from smugglers because it was cheaper that way before the tea act. The tea act made it possible to sell tea at a much lower price. The British got a response that they didn’t think that they were going to get from the colonist. They refused to buy the tea because it would “acknowledge Britain’s right to tax the colonies” (Eric Foner). There were very few colonist that were buying tea from shipping company. This lead to the colonist to what become to know as the Boston Tea Party. This is when the colonist destroyed 300 chests of tea which have a valve of “4 million dollars today” (Eric Foner). This was the tipping point for the new world. It gave them a spark that would eventually leading them to rise against the British
