The United States developed politically and economically in the late 1700s and early 1800s through individuals who were passionate about the future of America. Although passionate, not all men agreed on the same ideas; this led them to split into two groups. These groups, or political parties, spent much of their time advocating for certain policies, events, or other governmental issues, such as supporting or opposing the current president. Primarily because of the difference in their leaders ' beliefs, the two- party system developed with each party built on different principles; The Federalist 's ideas often clashed with the Democratic-Republican 's. These ideas were originally set in stone and rarely wavered, but under circumstances …show more content…
When the situation of Louisiana Purchase arose, the parties’ original ideas began to shift, especially in the case of the Democratic- Republicans. Jefferson wanted to complete the Louisiana Purchase, a sale of land from France to the United States that included the Northwest; parts of the Midwest; and South; as soon as possible (Document 4). In order to complete the purchase, Jefferson had to go against his initial claim that any powers not explicitly given to the constitution are given to the state. The constitution did not contain anything that gives the power to spend government funds on expanding the country’s boundaries, but in order to obtain this new land, Jefferson abandoned his beginning principles. In 1803, the Louisiana Purchase was completed, around the same time that Ohio became a state and Britain declared war on France in Europe (Document 4). A few years later in 1815, a clause was added to the constitution denying the purchase of new states without the approval of Congress. "No new state shall be admitted into the Union by Congress, in virtue of the power granted by the constitution, without the concurrence of two thirds of both houses..."(Document 5). This clause needed to be added so that in future situations when the chance to buy territory from other countries emerged, there was no way that the transaction could occur without going through Congress first. It is explicitly stated that a new state shall not be admitted into the union without Congressional approval and, therefore, does not allow for the future of Federalists and others who would advocate for implied powers to assume the authority to acquire new land. The addition of the latter clause to the constitution affected how the parties would look at territory purchases in the
“By purchasing the territory from France, the United States was directly antagonizing Spain”(3). The newly expanded borders of the U.S. were right along the area the Spanish owned, potentially resulting in war, which the American citizens certainly did not want. Along with the potential conflict with Spain, came the possibility of conflict with the Native Americans already inhabiting the land. Aside from these potential international problems, there were also internal conflicts. “Prior to the Louisiana Purchase, a geographical and political balance existed between slave and free states, with neither side possessing the population or political power to force an agenda upon rival states”(3), but the addition of new states would completely overthrow the
Jefferson’s election in 1800 marked the first peaceful transfer of power between political parties in U.S. history. This showed that the country could transition power without getting into violence or conflict. Jefferson believed in limited government and states rights, which means that he thought the federal government should have less power and the states should have more. Jefferson's purchase of the Louisiana land in 1803 doubled the size of the United States and expanded executive power by allowing the President to make large land purchases without approval from Congress.
The Louisiana Purchase Dear Editor: I think that Thomas Jefferson and the United States Government should buy the port of New Orleans because they need the get the port so that we can trade and expand the United States. One of the vast reasons that we bought the hefty territory was that we wanted total control of the New Orleans port so we could further our trade. We wanted to be in total control of the port because they stopped our trade and we needed to import and export goods. Another reason was the we wanted the port so we could trade whenever and no one could stop out trade.
Famous Democratic-Republican Thomas Jefferson won the presidential election in 1801, and in his time of reign came the expansion of the United States. Jefferson conceptualized the United States as a vast land run by small farmers and landholders. With this in mind, Jefferson acquired an immense amount of land called the Louisiana Purchase. America bought this from the French in 1803. Acquisition of almost 830,000 square miles of land, he needed a way to explore its entirety.
In the era before the Civil War America was expanding westward. The Louisiana Purchase and other lands gained help to give America new land to expand on, but this leaded to issues with the division of free and slave states. As Missouri became a state they wanted to become a slave state, which caused trouble. In order to keep equilibrium between the states, Congress came up with the Missouri Compromise of 1820.The Missouri Compromise made Missouri a slave state and Maine a free state. The Treaty also made a line within the Louisiana Territory to keep slavery from moving up the
Political parties began in America when two of George Washington’s advisors, Alexander Hamilton, leader of the Federalist and Thomas Jefferson, leader of the Democratic Republicans disagreed on political issues. Newspapers also influenced political parties. The Federalists and the Democratic Republicans were political parties that were created when an agreement could not be made for what would be best for the country. Hamilton was influenced by Britain to encourage trade and manufacturing, while Jefferson favored farming. Hamilton also favored a strong federal government, while Jefferson believed it would take the state’s power.
In my personal opinion, the moral dilemma that Jefferson faced resided in political reality. Jefferson had always advocated a very strict platform of Republican values up until this point. This position had been seen early on in his disagreements with Alexander Hamilton in President Washington's cabinet. In the election of 1800, Jefferson was able to articulate a new type of government that was filled with Republicanism.
1. Discuss the origins and evolution of the Second American Party System from the 1820s to the election of 1840. In particular, review two major issues that created controversy among American political leaders and their followers. The Transformation of America, 1815-1848," provides valuable insights into the origins and evolution of this political era. The first-party system in the United States revolved around the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans, but by the 1820s, this system began to crumble.
The Federalist and Republican Parties surfaced during George Washington’s term as President of the United States. During Washington’s term, Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson’s opposing views helped with the creation of these parties. Both had the best intentions for the newly founded United States, but their thinking went in different directions. The disagreements centered on the amount of control the national government had and the capabilities of the American people to govern themselves. The Federalist Party believed there should be a strong central government at the expense of the states’ rights, the government should be run by wealthy, highly-educated people encouraging manufacturing and trade, and the Constitution should be used as a guide and interpreted loosely.
Political parties, Democratic Republicans and Federalists, started in the U.S. because of differing views of Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson, and the influence of newspapers. Jefferson’s and Hamilton’s different ways of thinking(mostly on issues that was beneficial for the country) played a huge part in the start of political parties. They fought about economy. Jefferson liked farming while Hamilton preferred manufacturing and trade. Interpretation of the Constitution was another thing they fought upon.
Not long after the United States constitution was created, the country witnessed a growing debate over how to explain and apply the presentation of the new constitution. During the 1790s the United States federal government took charge in a series of threats to the country such as international tensions. Most importantly the formation of competing political parties which were the Federalists and Democratic-Republicans. Today the United States is predominately a two party system although more political parties exist, American voters usually side with one of the main two which are the Democrats or the Republicans. These two parties represent different visions for America.
Congress and across the country. They reached a boiling point after Missouri’s 1819 request for admission to the Union as a slave state or a free state, which threatened to upset the balance between slave states and free states. To keep the peace, Congress orchestrated a two-part compromise, granting Missouri’s request but also admitting Maine as a free state. It also passed an amendment that drew an imaginary line across the former Louisiana Territory, establishing a boundary between free and slave regions that remained the law of the land until it was negated by the Kansas. The north’s reaction towards the MIssouri Compromise was that they condemned it for acquiescing in the expansion of
In America’s history there have been many events or times that have in a way changed and shaped how we live today. The Louisiana Purchase could be recognized as one of the best and most impressive real estate purchases of Thomas Jefferson’s past. Also, this purchase could be looked at as one of the most important events in America’s past. Many historians would agree on this, but many opinions would be different on the fact if this purchase was actually worth the buy or not. Even Jefferson himself would have some doubts about the purchase.
Party system refers to the way parties are organized, the balance of powers between and within the parties, and the issues or ideas which the parties are organized around. The Federalist and Jeffersonian Republicans were the first party system to immerge in the seventeen nineties. The federalist focused on the concerns of New England merchants. The wanted to rebuild a relationship with Britain, assumption of debt from the revolutionary war, and programs with encouraged manufacturing. The Jeffersonian republics were run with southern agriculture in mind.
Also, with the control of the Mississippi river we could now have stronger trade and be able to use the Mississippi river for different things. This evidence supports that it was a very smart move that the United States decided to make the Louisiana Purchase with France. To conclude, the Louisiana Purchase was a very smart move by the United States because this allowed many positive thing to happen. First, it allowed the western country to have peace and prosperity mainly with the Indians and opened a free and valuable market. Second, it doubled the size of the United States making it a bigger and stronger nation.
