Dbq Shay's Rebellion

Daniel Shays led a rebellion after the U.S. went into economic depression. This caused the Massachusetts government to seize several farms and sell them to re-gain profits. Shays led a mob of 1,000 enraged Massachusetts farmers to get weaponry from a state warehouse in August 1786. The rebellion was a fail because Shays and other fellow comrades were arrested. All in all, Daniel Shays led a rebellion because many farmers plots of land were taken and sold for profit.

Last night on February 4, 1787, General Benjamin Lincoln attacked members of the Shays’ Rebellion, and successfully captured 150 of the rebels. As a result, Daniel Shays left Massachusetts and fled to Vermont. Shays Rebellion was an armed rebellion consisting of 1,200 angry farmers from Massachusetts. They caused major chaos in this state. On December 26, 1786 Daniel Shays and the rebels revolted in Springfield, Massachusetts insisting that the state legislature address their issues, such as lack of money.

They did not pay taxes, which is a law that the local agreed to. To add on, once farmers were thrown into jail; Fellow farmers would help break him/her out according to class notes.. Freedom FIghters would not disobey laws. If so why would they turn to guns that

Shays Rebellion served as the final nail in the coffin for the Articles of Confederation. Although the Articles of Confederation was America's first national document, it came with many weaknesses. One of the major weaknesses was that the federal government was too weak and therefore could not enforce laws. The Continental Congress borrowed money to fight in both the Revolutionary War and the French and Indian War therefore were in debt.

Shays’ Rebellion was the first rebellion to happen in the United States after they broke away from England. It was viewed in many ways and was considered the start of chaos. When Thomas Jefferson heard about it he believed it was not the start of chaos but a good thing. Jefferson said that no country would be able to go on without any problems. In the letter it states that “Where has there ever been a conflict except in the single instance of Shays’ rebellion?”

Many people tend to believe the end of the Revolutionary War meant the end of all problems in America, but that was not the case. The return to a normal lifestyle after the war was long-awaited and anticipated by just about everyone, as soldiers were reunited with their families and people once again had access to all the things made unavailable during wartime. This boom in morale and economics was however, short lived as the newly established government was faced with paying off the debts to other countries and the soldier who risked their lives for years. In the declaration of independence and the letter from Jefferson on Shay's Rebellion proves that Jefferson would support modern day protests. For example in paragraph 1 it states "God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion.". This line tells us how there will always be protests. Jefferson writes "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with blood of patriots and tyrants.". Here Jefferson is inturrpeting that rebellions and protests are natural and they will happen from"time to time".

Back during the Shays rebellion there was no one to help them so the government had to ask for

The village of Paxton was located in eastern Pennsylvania. Paxton became a place of political and racial unrest during Pontiac’s Rebellion. Paxton was still part of the frontier until the 1760’s and was populated by Scots-Irish. They requested soldiers and weapons because of their vulnerability to attack. Their request was ignored because of the legislators who were Quakers.

Essay 2 Blinn US History: “Thomas Jefferson: First Inaugural Address, 1801” In his first Inaugural Address Thomas Jefferson is addressing the nation and presenting topics necessary for moving the country forward into the 19th century. He believed that unity between opposing parties and of the people, upholding of the Constitution, and not being involved in alliances with any countries would advance the country forward towards success and greatness. Jefferson’s first topic he focuses on is the belief that unity is the sole reason that great nations exist.

This is because Shays rebellion took place because the poor farmers were fighting against the outrageous taxes which were leaving them without land and in prison with no means of supplying food for their families. In many states at the time if someone didn't have land they weren't able to vote because in the governments eyes they had no power. These taxes were taking away the farmers land which then also took away their right to vote which left them powerless and made their options pointless. Poor farmers ended up in jail which left their families out on the streets begging for money and a means to survive. Just like the whiskey rebellion farmers were left without a way to supply for their family because the demand of whiskey was way down after the government increase the tax by 25%.

Before Shay's Rebellion the government was weak and unorganized and taxes and wages were unfair to the citizens. Farmers at the time were angry at the fact that they were loosing land just because of high taxes and the shortage of currency that was caused by the weak economic system. Shay's Rebellion consisted of the outraged farmers attacking courthouses because of all the unfairness that was being sent towards them. They gave more money for taxes and received low currency. The farmers as well rebelled against the "government" so they wouldn't foreclose their land.

In 1786, there were a series of protests by the name of Shay’s Rebellion led by American farmers who were against state and local enforcement of tax collection and judgements for debts. It is said that during Shay’s Rebellion the rebels tried to capture the federal arsenal at Springfield and harassed leading merchants, lawyers, and supporters of the state government (History.com). Not everyone agrees 100 percent with the government, frequently not even 50 percent agree. Those who do not agree go through extreme measures to be heard by their higher power, so that they can try to change the outcome of what has become of the government's

Around the time of these protests Americans were beginning to realize their rights as citizens and what their ideal government looked like. Settlers of the backcountry were rebelling against the federalists, attempting to acquire more representation in the government. The people of the backcountry were becoming more oppressed as Alexander Hamilton began to attempt to improve America’s economy with manufacturing and revenue taxes. The backcountry settlers organized violent protests, three of these rebellions being Shays’ Rebellion, Whiskey Rebellion, and March of the Paxton Boys.
