The memoir Night by Elie Wiesel was written in 1955, 10 years after he went through the Holocaust. The holocaust was when Hitler wanted to exterminate the Jewish race by putting them in concentration camps. The Jews are dehumanized through chapter 1-3.Hitler described them by the Jewish problem. Hitler was the one started the Holocaust.

The book Night by Elie Wiesel offers a harrowing account of the atrocities that were inflicted on Jews during the Holocaust. The Jews were subjected to inhumane treatment, such as being forcefully deported to concentration camps, starved, worked until exhaustion, and routinely beaten, among other forms of cruelty. The brutalization of Jews reached its peak with their systematic extermination in gas chambers and crematoria. These events offer insight into the dehumanization of Jews under Nazi rule. The book offers a reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust and the need to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future Jews were subjected to inhumane treatment in concentration camps during the Holocaust.

Dehumanization during the Holocaust was the most condemnable factor as to how such cruel and inhumane acts could be brushed off as mere orders, brothers and sisters became feral towards one another, and how one’s body can become so isolated from the mind. It is difficult to imagine such horrid ideas as reality, much less as history, but Elie Wiesel describes all of these gruesome acts in Night, his autobiographical account of his experience during the Holocaust. In addition, through this memoir, Wiesel also provided us a true definition of what dehumanisation when Elie got separated from his family. Wiesel portrays the emotion that Elie was having when he and his father was separated from his mother "Yet that was the moment when I parted from my mother." Through the expression that Wiesel describe Elie we can see how cruelty and dehumanisation were the Germans to the Jewish people. They were making all the Jewish separated to many sections in the camp "Men to the left, women to the right." Wiesel also provided us the information that anything can happen in the camp to the Jewish people.

Throughout this Essay I am going to focus on Dehumanization. To specify throughout the book the Jews are slowly dehumanized and seen as less than human. I believe Elie Wiesel uses the technique of dehumanization to effectively convey his message of the horrors of the Holocaust and the human capacity for evil. In the beginning of the book Night, the Jews were having a week of Passover, in Elies community they sang, ate and drank.

In this work, Night  by Elie Wiesel, the author expresses that restricting basic needs and one’s individuality, leads way to dehumanization, in which deconstructs a culture.  As Elie’s struggle slowly comes to an end, he analyzes his experience living in concentration camps and the loss of his character, which is emphasized toward the end of the memoir.  While beginning to adjust to the environment and the camp itself, Elie is approached by a hostile gentleman wanting to have his gold crown because of its value. This instance is shown when it says, “If you don't give me your crown, it will cost you much more!"(Wiesel 55). Due to the fact that the camps had given the prisoners, small rations of food, and stripped them of their valuable items, the crown's value had increased.

In Elie Wiesel’s Night he and many of the other prisoners felt victimized by the guards and their use of power over them. One example of abuse and dehumanization is Franek, the foreman. Elie’s father was unable to march in step, which caused a problem for him because everywhere they went it was in step, “This presented Franek with the opportunity to torment him and, on a daily basis, to thrash him savagely.

Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night expresses his experiences and struggles during the Holocaust. Night reveals a story of horror, death, and fear whilst exhibiting a sense of hope and perseverance. In the story, Elie is taken from his home, separated from his family, and brought to a concentration camp where he was would live through things no person should have to go through. Night takes place during 1941-1945 during the height of the Holocaust. Throughout the story, the Jews are slowly turned into brutes through a process called dehumanization.

Dehumanization is when a person is treated as a wild animal, worth nothing more only less. The Eastern European Jews, like Elie Wiesel and his father, for example, whose stories are intertwined in his memoir Night, endured horrendous and inhumane acts. The acts Elie, his Father and every other Jew endured happend over a time period of twelve years. For instance, when Elie first got to Auschwitz in 1944, the soldiers said “Men to the left, Women to the right”. Then in 1945, Elie and his father were transferred to Buchenwald where his father would die.

Throughout Night, dehumanization consistently took place as the tyrant Nazis oppressed the Jewish citizens. The Nazis targeted the Jews' humanity, and slowly dissolved their feeling of being human. The feeling of dehumanization was very common between the jews. They were constantly being treated as in they were animals. In the book, Night, Dehumanization majorly affects the Jews. Dehumanization is the process by which the Nazis gradually reduced the Jews to little more than things. It makes the Jews want to give up. There are many examples of dehumanization, including beating, selection, and robbery. Eliezer was whipped in front of everyone during roll call, “…I shall therefore try to make him understand clearly once and for all…I no longer felt anything except the lashes of the whip.

Night Final Open Ended Question Night, written by Elie Wiesel, is a memoir about his life as he goes through the Holocaust. Eliezer goes through many situations that cause him, and other Jews, to be dehumanized by the Nazis. The three levels of dehumanization are physical, mental, and emotional. Eliezer was affected by all three. Never in his whole life did he imagine that this would happen to him or his family.

Dehumanization Causing Events in Night Over the course of Eliezer’s holocaust experience in the novel Night, the Jews are gradually reduced to little more that “things” which were a nuisance to Nazis. This process was called dehumanization. Three examples of events that occurred which contributed to the dehumanization of Eliezer, his father, and his fellow Jews are: people were divided both mentally and physically, those who could not work or who showed weakness were killed, and public executions were held.

In which millions of Jews were innocently killed and persecuted because of their religion. As a student who is familiar with the years of the holocaust that will forever live in infamy, Wiesel’s memoir has undoubtedly changed my perspective. Throughout the text, I have been emotionally touched by the topics of dehumanization, the young life of Elie Wiesel, and gained a better understanding of the Holocaust. With how dehumanization was portrayed through words, pondering my mind the most.
