A survival situation can happen anywhere and anytime. Most of people died from the situation and most of people have survived as well. If someone wants to survive through an extreme situation they will need high qualities. The most essential factors to have in survivor is skills, determination and resilience. That is the three key ideas this essay will explain and discuss with. Determination is simply not giving up. No matter how hard things get, or how badly people want to just give up, they keep on going. It is the very essential thing for survivors, even in our live too. When someone does something with determination it is like twice a power people have. In the incident of six young people were camping by Mount saint Helens while the volcano erupting. They all have the determination to survive , but the person who show determination the most is Dan Balch. When the eruption starts and mess up all the tents. He is the person that sprinted off to find the missing friends, even his left legs and hands were …show more content…
This quality has been used in every survival situation. Because resilience is the ability to deal well with stress, adversity and trauma. These all things are obtained from extreme situations. But it will not erase or change the problems, It instead gives people the ability to find something positive that will help people find the ways to survive. A great example of resilience is Aron Ralston. During the five days his hand has pinned and stuck to the rock. He had come up with options to survive and when almost all of it did not work. And his food and water running low, he has to use the last option is to sever his arm. He used three days to cut his arm off, before he completely cut his arm off, he had twisted his arm until the bones broke and used tourniquet. With one-handed he had abseiled eighteen metres to the canyon floor and walked ten km before got help from Dutch
Hook: There are many situations where you would have to be a survivor. Aron Ralston, Hyeonseo Lee and Mr. Rainsford, a fictional character from “The Most Dangerous Game”, are all survivors. Ms. Lee had to leave North Korea illegally, Rainsford had to survive a murders game and Aron Ralston had to somehow find a way to get his arm out of a huge boulder. To be an extraordinary survivor you need three traits: determination, knowledge and hope. T:To begin Aron Ralston had determination.
{Olivia} Ultimately, each story had a different main character with a specific trait that enables them to survive. In the story Trapped, Aron Ralston uses stamina to be a survivor. That is different in the story The Most Dangerous Game where Rainsford uses his logic to be a survivor. Hyeonseo Lee uses her quality of bring brave to survive her hardships. Throughout your life there are going to be struggles and these three traits could potentially impact you to earn the title of being a survivor.
Louie has many survival traits that allow him to survive this horrendous experience, including perseverance, hope, and fearlessness. One of the most important traits that allow Louie to survive is
He tried his hardest to keep his mind straight through the amputation. Doing that alone shows determination. This shows how determined he was to survive through the
The determination to live comes from human nature. But the urge of giving up when we come across a difficult problem is also a part of human nature. There a few people in this world that have the characteristics of resilience. As author Kendra Cherry describes them, "People that are able to keep their cool have what psychologists call resilience, or an ability to cope with problems and setbacks" (Source A; Cherry, 1). An example of someone who has the characteristics of resilience is a bombardier name Louis (Louie) Zamperini.
Louie Zamperini, never knowing which way is right or wrong, conquers everything thrown his way, and that forms him into an idol to his family and the world. Louie Zamperini, shaken, growing up he was an outsider, never really understanding what his calling was until, he became a runner. Having one of the fastest times in the world. His life was about to change. Laura Hillenbrand's best seller book, Unbroken, is a story based on soldier, father, and Olympic Runner, Louie Zamperini, he projects the characteristics of determination and resourcefulness in the story.
Determination is a word defined as “firmness of purpose; resoluteness” (Dictionary.com). In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, determination soaks into the mindset of a select few characters in a town named Maycomb, Alabama, during the 1930s. The few characters with the asset of being determined are Bob Ewell, an enemy of many, Tom Robinson, a hardworking man, and Atticus Finch, a greatly appreciated person who sticks to his beliefs.
In my view resilience can sometime be brought on by an emotional event and helps you with self-confidence. Additionally, I feel that resilience means that one can expect things that can happen in a process and can adjust accordingly to the situation at hand. My example of resilience was demonstrated in this TED talk video “My Escape from North Korea” by Hyeonseo Lee, she discusses her life in North Korea and how everything was transparent to her in North Korea as she was growing up until the age of seven. In response to Larry’s claim that” forgiveness is not for the other person,” he presents a poorly inconsistent argument, on several questionable norms, which his evidence is based solely on his life situations.
In order to survive our adversities some of us need survival factors. For instance, Salva Dut from “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park needed survival factors in order to survive his adversities. This book is nonfiction and explains the story of Salva Dut-Ariik and what he did to survive. Salva used many survival factors such as bravery, hope and determination. Salva needed bravery.
What does resilience really mean to you? The literal definition to resilience is the ability to cope with problems and setbacks. In the story Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, she shows us all different kind of ways that the characters in her story used the skills that Kendra Cherry was talking about, to help them out of every situation. In this story it shows how certain situations affect people in different ways and how each person goes through seven skills. The characteristic that Louie undergoes is the skill of Strong Problem-Solving.
Resilience First Aid Kit-Reflection Resilience is defined as; the ability to adapt to stressful, or difficult situations. If you are resilient, you are able to adapt to situations which trouble you without major difficulties. The task was to “Create a Resilience First-Aid Kit”. My resilience first aid kit includes items that I believe will assist someone to overcome problems, stress or hard situations that may occur throughout their time.
Hardy, Concato & Gill (2004) stated that resilient people are those who display “the capacity to remain well, recover, or even thrive in face of adversity”. Masten (2001) as mentioned that they are the ordinary person dealing with the challenges and tragedies of everyday real life. For instance, the response of many Americans to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and individuals’ efforts to rebuild their lives shows their resiliency. Being resilient does not mean that a person does not have or had experience difficulty or distress; the emotional pain and sadness are common but the path to resilience is likely to involve considerable emotional distress. Resilience is not a trait which people either has or do not have whereas it involves
However, resilience may also be described as the innate human quality that has not necessarily developed only after big disasters but processed through positive adaptation. A person can be resilient if he/she experience positive life events such as a job promotion, wedding, birth of a new child or having a new pet. These incidents would require the person to perform new roles and responsibilities and he/she can develop resilience to these changes overtime. This is resilience acquired through positive adaption (Fletcher & Sarkar,
According to Masten (2001) “resiliency refers to a class of phenomena characterized by good outcomes in spite of serious threats to adaptation or development” (p. 228). Garmezy (1991) considers the intelligence level of an individual and ability to possess the mind power to tackle an adverse situation as one pleases as the core characteristics of a resilient individual. Garmezy (1991) resiliency framework allows student affairs professionals is to examine the strengths of disadvantaged students who are faced with various life stressors, but
Introduction This essay will look into how the concepts of resilience and the four trajectories proposed by Bonanno can be applied in the case studies. The target population of the case studies is people with medical conditions, namely, spinal cord injury, SARS and breast cancer. Furthermore, this essay will focus on the similarities of how people behave when facing a stressful situation. [[[[[Different percentages of trajectories, the possible predictors and the reason of the differences in the percentages of different trajectories]]]]]] Stressors and effects The first study is about people suffering from spinal cord injuries.
