I have chosen Into Thin Air for my project because the main theme of this novel is Danger and Morality. I feel as there’s danger and morality in my city and around the world, with the natural events occurring. Into Thin Air is a great work of literature because of Krakauer’s use of imagery and symbolism to describe the situation of the mountain. Also, the plot is exciting, and it leaves the reader in shock on each page. The writer tells it as it is.

In The Crucible, the normal social and moral order is completely inverted. Salem was a secluded village in Massachusetts that was a strict, theocratic, hierarchical, patriarchal society where power and morality were two incredibly important aspects within the community. The men of Salem held all of the political power in the community and their rule was strengthened not only by the law but also by the hypothetical approval of God. Deviance is defined as "any violation of norms, whether the infraction is as minor as driving over the speed limit, as serious as murder, or as humorous as Chagnon 's encounter with the Yanomamo" (Henslin 194). One statement that stuck out to me was sociologist Howard S. Becker 's definition of deviance: "It is not the act itself, but the reactions to the act, that make something deviant" (Henslin 194). One reaction that acts as a punishment for a deviant or minor criminal is the criminal justice system. On page 211 in our book, it is stated that "the working class and those below them pose a special threat to the power elite" (Henslin). As a result of this threat, the law and punishment comes down harder on the lower class than it does on the upper class.

1. How does Strain Theory define and explain deviance? Strain theory defines deviance as the situation whereby there exists a gap or difference between societal success goals and the determined means available to the society for achieving these goals. In a society, individuals share similar goals towards success and thus have agreeable means of achieving the same, however, when such an agreement is foregone such a society has a high rate of deviance.

Chapter 16 of Readings for Sociology, titled "Deviance and Liminality" by Beth Montemurro describes liminality as "being 'neither here nor there'" in reference to the in between phase of transitioning from one status to the next. Deviance can be defined as behavior that violates social expectations and norms. Deviance can be something small like dressing like a hippy or in gothic clothing, or something big like robbing a bank. Each society has laws and rules to keep one from committing deviant acts. Colin Kaepernick is going against NFL policies, going against his duty as an American citizen, and finally, he is disrespecting the men and women who fought and died for this country. I believe Colin Kaepernick is being deviant when kneeling to the flag.

In the Roughnecks vs Saints, the roughnecks went around doing dangerous things. When the roughnecks did something everyone in the town heard about it. However when the saints were participating in dangerous activity they did it with utmost secrecy and were never detected or labeled as deviant. Being labeled as deviant comes from doing risky things seen as bad in society. Once one has done something deviant and society labels them as a deviant they internalize the way society perceives them and moves on to secondary deviance.

Reading Response Deviance is the term that is coined for someone doing anything outside the norms of social standards. Straying from the social norms is not necessarily a bad thing, for instance a woman doing jobs that. in society are considered a man's job, and vise versa, a man that stays at home to support his kids would get strange looks from people. When people do what's not within the social norms there is usually some sort of negative reaction. whether it be jail time or nasty looks from people on the streets.

According to Hunt and Colandar (2011), a word deviant refers to when an individual’s actions contradict with society’s norms. For instance, majority peoples followed norms because society expect individual to behave in morally tolerate with each other. Those failing to conform the norms noted as deviant. In a social context, the task of the society is to blind the action of the social community together. Once failing to act them to the society’s reaction that seem as deviant.

Functionalists, conflict theorist, and interactionist all have different views and focus on different parts of society and its people. What is deviance? Deviance is a behavior, trait, or belief that departs from a norm and generates a negative reaction in a particular group (Ferris and Stein 151). It is considered a social construct.

It’s very common for one to feel insecure but when does the constant worrying over one’s physical appearance classify as deviant behavior? Personally, I feel like in order for insecurity to classify as a deviant behavior in need of treatment, it would have to affect a person’s life in such a great amount that they would no longer be able to function correctly and perform their everyday tasks because of it.
