I am reading To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee. The book is about a family that lives in a small town called Maycomb, Alabama and takes place during the great depression. It is a very small town where everyone knows each other. However there is an outsider, Mr. Radley that the kids in town, Jem, Scout, and Dill want to know more about. In this journal I will be predicting and evaluating.

None of the kids have saw him a day in their life, but they hear countless stories of how terrible he is and that he has been locked up for a very long time. Boo (Arthur) Radley has been getting locked up basically his entire life. Boo drove a scissors into his father’s leg it stated on page 9. This is the start to Boo Radleys life in solitude. After he was tried in court for the stabbing Boo was locked in the courthouse basement because no one had the heart to put him in jail with the Negros. To me it is sick that someone would stab their own parents who have loved them unconditionally for so many years. It also seems really crazy that Boo would stab his dad that is letting Boo live with them at the age of 33 (Lee 9). Before Boo could rot in the courthouse basement the town council told Mr. Radley “Boo would die of mold from the damp and Boo cannot live forever on the bounty of the county” (Lee 9). This to me says a lot that I don’t think …show more content…
It seems obvious that they live just like if not worse then animals. Their hygiene is absolutely terrible. Burris, if that is his real name seems to think there is no problem having “cooties” which is another word for lice. Which is disgusting and I do not see how the other kids are afraid of getting it as well. The teacher Mrs. Caroline shrieked in horror and said “ I walked by and it just crawled out of his hair!” (Lee 24). The Ewells also do not care about how dirty they are, or how disgusting they look. Scout explained how gross Burris looked by saying “ he was the most filthiest human I had ever seen. His neck was dark gray and his hands were rusty and his nails were black deep” (Lee 25). This proves that they obviously do not care about their appearance or how ridiculous they look in public. I find it crazy that the Burris does not want to shower. I would hate looking that grungy and I could only imagine how his skin must feel and if I were to get that dirty I am sure that I would be breaking out like crazy. The Ewells are on the outskirts of the Maycomb County. They may farm, but it would be extremely hard because To Kill A Mockingbird takes place during the great depression, farmers got hit the hardest during it. The outskirts of Maycomb are also a dump. Which means that there could be various varmints, and rodents carrying diseases, like the lice. This could also be the reason that the Ewells look so dirty all
Passage 1: “Where’s the man with the megaphone?” The fair boy shook his head. “This is an island. At least I think it’s an island.
1. “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” is a story full of ironic scenes. There are unrealistic scenarios throughout the entire storyline. In one aspect of the story, the reader gets a very vivid and clear depiction of Huck Finn’s father. The description of his father is one that comes with irony as Huck’s father did not want him to be educated.
The Interludes: “Does He Meant That?” (82) “One Story” (185) I agree with Foster’s Ideas although it's a bit confusing to comprehend and imagine a writer take days on writing a paragraph, page or sentence. It makes a bit of sense though because you often see writers publish pieces in a years time or maybe even more. It would make sense as well because the writer or the author has been educated in writing, literature, and etc.
In this journal I will be questioning and predicting G I predict the kids will not meet boo Y Boo is locked up R never comes out R does everything at home R cut his dad with scissors Y Kids are scared of Boo R stories of the house R stories about his terroristic doings R hesitant to go touch his house G The kids will not meet Boo most likely because both he is locked up and he is also scary and intimidating. As I am reading this story, I question what is going on with the character Boo Radley.
There is a strange story that Boo was sitting in the living room, and when his parents came in the room he stabbed scissors into their leg. When the police showed up, Mrs. Radley was sitting in the living room perfectly fine. It was also told that at night Boo would be seen peering into the windows of his neighbors houses. Boo was so well known that if a negro was walking down the street, they would cross the street and under no circumstance walk past the house on the same side of the road. Boo was also part of a gang.
I think that one of the most important ideas of this chapter is how Jack was wearing the mask when he was hunting the pig. I think that this is important because I think that it symbolizes that Jack was not himself when he was hunting the pigs. This can be shown by this quote: “He [Jack] capered toward Bill, and the mask was a thing on its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness.” Another important idea of this chapter is the fire going out again.
Thesis: The fate of children who experience paternal trauma is unfortunately negative. Topic Sentence for this section: Boo Radley was abused by his father and kept in confinement. CD #1 “ “Jem gave a reasonable description of Boo: Boo was about six and a half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch. That’s why his hands were bloodstained—if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood off.
I picked this passage to represent the beginning of the book because it shows the awakening of the darkness in the boys’ hearts and their realization of the power they hold. This fits into the theme because it is when the boys realize that they can have power over themselves on this island and start to ignore the rules of the conch. The fire they unleashed represents the chaos that the society will eventually fall into. Piggy, as he represents law and order, glances into the fire and foreshadows what is to come. I really like the use of describing the noises of the fire as “a drumroll that seemed to shake the mountain.”
In the duration of reading the novel, The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, my collection of dialectical journals reflect on what I learned and understood through important events, small details and characters. First considering the choices I made when reading and completing assignments, I chose passages that are easy to connect to because being an individual of a young spirit and mind similar to the childish survivors, I felt close to the characters’ emotions and actions of ignorance, insecurity, pride and fear. The dialectical journals also influenced my reading of later chapters by expecting an increase of failure than success. Ralph’s continuation of failing to unite the survivors together to create survival resulted in a hopeless
Chapter 1: Ralph-has leadership and is smart, since he came up with blowing the conch when there is a meeting and went exploring on the island. In the future I think Ralph will continue to show his intelligence and be a great leader. Piggy-Piggy seems very nice and is eager to become friends with Ralph and is very trusting. I think Piggy will be made fun of since they found out from Ralph that his name is Piggy. Piggy seems to be an outsider since he wears glasses, has asthma, and is overweight.
In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee , The Ewells and the Cunninghams are quite different. The greatest difference between the two families is their hygiene. The Ewells are filthy. Burris Ewell´s ¨Neck was dark grey, the backs of his hands were rusty, and his fingernails were black deep into the quick¨ (27). The cunninghams are clean.
Journal #5 I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and I am on page 376. This book is about a girl named Scout who lives with brother Jem, aunt Alexandra, and father Atticus. The kids have learned a lot from the experiences with people in the town like Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. When Tom died it affects the whole town for a little bit. When the kids were attacked by Bob Ewell, but Boo Radley came to save them.
Mr. Radley found him shameful and locked him in the house for fifteen years. One night, Boo stabbed his father in the leg. According to town gossip, Miss Stephanie Crawford, he “...drove the scissors into his parent’s leg and pulled them out, wiped them on his pants and returned to his activities” (13). Although, this
There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten, his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time.” Little do they know that Boo Radley will play a huge part in their survival at the end of the book when the crazy Bob Ewell Attacks them and Boo Radley protected them, something that Jem and scout would’ve never imagined, But something that the reader could foreshadow. Due to Boo’s acts of kindness like when he returned Jem’s pants sowed after he got them caught on the barb wire fence while he was snooping and around and also the gifts he left in the knot of the tree that helped him build a deeper sentimental relationship with Jem and Scout even if the kids did not know it. Boo had built such a relationship with them that he had done something extremely courageous and protects Jem and scout from Bob
After witnessing Jem, Scout, and Dill acting out his rumored “life story”, I infer that it must have been very weird and uncomfortable for Boo to be so close to “his children” when they were the ones who supposedly made fun of him. Emotionally he is struggling because he is overwhelmed by the fact that he is always a hot topic of the town, and the trio acting his story out didn’t make him feel any better. In the poem “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou the last stanza is written “The caged bird sings/ with a fearful trill/ of things unknown/ but longed for still/and his tune is heard/ on the distant hill/ for the caged bird/sings of freedom.” Boo Radley
