To a great extent, Diego Rivera’s artistic work portrayed and embraced Socialism in Mexico. Rivera’s participation in the Mexican Communist Party added depth and meaning to his work by overshadowing many global socialist movements. Much of his Socialist work was attributed to his lucid observations of social inequality, progressive ideas and educational environment in Mexico and Europe.
Rivera’s outlook on life developed during the “Porfiriato” Era (1876-1910) under the dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz. As a member of the Mexican Communist Party Rivera and his fellow Communist viewed it as their mission to make art a personal display for the people of Mexico. He spread his ideology by forming a coalition with David Alfaro Siqueiros and Jose Clemente Orozco. “Los Tres Grandes” became the most prominent mexican muralists of the 20th century and believed fervently in the Communist cause. By implementing elements of Catholicism and parts of his Mexican heritage into his rallies using The Virgen de Guadalupe as a symbol for protection, and by protesting through the use of nonviolence and self-sacrifice, Cesar Chavez managed to start a revolution in America to get first class citizenship for Mexican Americans. In order to create a following with the Mexican farm workers, Cesar had to not only fight for the rights of the workers, but he also had to connect with them spiritually. For example, the author writes, “One cannot understand this significant struggle by interpreting it only as a labor one. This was also a spiritual struggle enveloped by Mexican American Catholic beliefs, symbols, and traditions” (Garcia 12).

The video I chose to review is “Viva la Causa” by Teaching Tolerance. This movie is very educational and it covers a lot of important topics about how farm workers fought for their rights in the fields. I believe this movie was created to show and explain to minorities and farm workers that marching and boycotting for human rights can lead to a better outcome working in the fields. Cesar Chavez was a string and intelligent Chicano man that believed farm workers were being treated poorly in the fields. They would get sprayed with pesticide, lack of clean water, no bathrooms, and long hours of work with little pay that were not being acknowledged by the farm owners.

During the Chicano Nationalist Movement, a well-known speaker, Rodolfo ‘Corky’ Gonzales, delivered a speech titled Chicano Nationalism: Victory for La Raza. In this speech, Rodolfo Gonzales tries to unify the Latin American people within the United States by using the idea of a family and to create a new political organization for the Chicano people. This speech was a cumulation of various ideas which stemmed from his own life, the experiences of the Chicano people, and the Chicano Nationalist Movement in general. Each of these factors contributed to the context of the speech and how the ideas within the speech are presented by Rodolfo Gonzales. Rodolfo ‘Corky’ Gonzales was born to Federico and Indalesia Gonzales, two Mexican immigrants, on June 18, 1928.
In order to write this book, the author clearly uses different manuscripts and papers that helped him to explain and show the situation of this social movement. Octavio Paz, a Mexican poet and essayist, is one of the many philosophers with a written piece regarding his understanding of Lo Mexicano. Paz’s “Sons of La Malinche” was first published in the Labyrinth of Solitude in 1950 and is a rather grim interpretation of the Mexican character, however, it captures the crisis of identity that Mexico was burdened with after the conquest. The work by historian Engracia Loyo Gobiernos Revolucionarios y Educacion Popular en Mexico, 1911-1928 (1999) focuses on the years during the Mexican Revolution and decades after it ended with a similar approach to Morales’s work. Loyo explicitly states the importance of Meneses Morales’ work in her understanding of the educational policies during the years before the Revolution. She sees these as having similar principles to subsequent years. Particularly, the education plans during Porfirio Diaz’s dictatorship (from 1876 to 1911) valued secular education funded by the state. This served as starting point for the revolutionary governments, which despite Mexico’s religious homogeneity decided to keep education committed with scientific knowledge.
