The Articles of Confederation was the first American constitution. The Articles was a form of government that had strong state government and a weak central government. This form of government was extremely flawed due to the lack of power in the central government. The power of the national government was limited in the Articles of Confederation. The U.S Constitution has three branches of government, a Legislature branch, and Executive branch, and a Judiciary branch. The Constitution was created with checks and balances in order to fix the articles by making a strong central government with limited power to the states. The Constitution also had the Bill of Rights and the amendments. There are many differences between the Articles of Confederation
The articles of confederation built the structure for what the United States calls the Government today. Before the constitution the Articles of Confederation played an extremely important factor in creating a unified country. The articles of conferation is an agreement between the 13 states it acted as a "firm league of friendship" for the states by providing an alliance. The Articles of Confederation proved the United States had a limited central government. This then led the founding fathers to agree that a new stronger constitution was necessary thus they ratified the constitution and addressed the need for a stronger central government.
The Articles of Confederation was one of the first forms of the Constitution established, but it was replaced with the current Constitution because it failed to establish unity. The Articles of Confederation was a more simple and weak version of the Constitution. In the Articles of Confederation, all power was given to the state such as collecting taxes while congress had close to no power. Each state had more power than congress and the people combined. The AOC failed to establish laws limiting citizens to their rights.
During the Revolutionary War, Congress developed the first constitution of the United States, known as the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation was drafted in 1776 and 1777 and was then approved by the states in 1781. Although the articles of confederation were weak, it managed to survive the war years. In 1787, a convention was held to rewrite the Articles since the resulting government was weak, that’s when the U.S Constitution was written. The powers given to the federal government in the U.S constitution and the Articles of Confederation differ.
The Constitution changed the face of the United States government. However, the United States government was not always run by the Constitution. The Articles of Confederation came before it, but ultimately was decided to be unfit for the needs of the republic due to the lack of power to the central government and the weak bond it formed for the Union. The Constitution transformed the federal system of the United States into the balanced system we use today. The Articles of Confederation and the Constitution were very different documents, especially under the topic of state sovereignty.
Millions of people died during the revolutionary war. After the U.S won they created a national government called the Articles of Confederation. The government was a government where the federal government didn’t have much power. People like Ben Franklin and James Madison realized it wasn’t working and they created a new government called the Constitution. The replacement of the Articles of Confederation with the Constitution was necessary for the U.S to thrive and survive.

The Articles of Confederation and the Constitution of the United States are in some cases the same in many ways. We can assume that the Constitution is the extension of the Articles of Confederation which can be considered as the first Constitution of the United States. The Articles of Confederation were adopted in 1777 and were the combination of 13 states that includes New Hampshire, Massachusetts-bay, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. By the 1787 the Constitution replaced these articles, which is the existing Constitution of the United States of America.
The Articles of Confederation and the Constitution are vastly different, yet both exhibit what was scene as essential to the success of the nation when they each were written and enacted. It is no doubt that the Articles of Confederation were weak, otherwise citizens and legislative bodies would still be answering to them. However, the Articles served as the nation’s first constitution during the Revolutionary War, of which the United States was the victor. Therefore, despite the differences between the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution, both documents are essential to American history and the progress of this country. At the time of ratification in 1781, and well before that, the Articles of Confederation were established to
Articles of Confederation vs. the Constitution The intent the framers had of the executive was reflected in the Articles of Confederation. There were several problems with the Articles of Confederation, that Han and Heith mentioned in chapter two of “Presidents and the American Presidency, due to a lack of insight and political effectiveness. Since, the document did not allocate a head of state it caused the articles of confederation to be extremely weak. The confederation could not enforce laws, coordinate national defense, or handle foreign affairs.
The Articles of Confederation were a document seen as the “first” constitution of the United States. This document granted the new national government power to control the military, declare war, and create treaties between the states. However, the Articles had holes in it considering the government did not have the power to tax, create laws without at least nine states’ approval, or change the Articles of Confederation without a unanimous vote. This means that the country soon fell into debt and petty arguments between state, the new government had no control. It was time for a change.

The Articles had first been introduced by Richard Henry Lee in the Second Continental Congress. Although the Articles of Confederation has made its contributions throughout history, the Articles, however, did not last very long and had been proven inadequate from the very start. I agree with this statement based on the examples and analysis of the Constitution I will soon provide. The Articles of Confederation were written during a time when the American people feared a strong national government.
The Articles of the Confederation was the first government constitution that the United States used, and, although there were strength like the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, there were major weaknesses of the Articles of the Confederation like the following: requiring 9 out of the 13 colonial votes from the representatives from different states to pass a law; having no executive and judicial branch; and the federal government being unable to impose tax revenue onto the states. Such flaws would eventually lead to the Constitution and the repeal of the articles, for the Constitution was a measure to fix the problems of the articles with a stronger government that allowed them to impose taxes and and implement new laws for a more effective government.
In one hand, the Articles of Confederation had a weak central government, differing form the strong central government in the Constitution. The Constitution’s government had a structure of three different branches; the legislative, executive, and judicial branch; unlike the Articles of Confederation that had no structure whatsoever. The Articles of Confederation had many problems like, the poor international trade, poor foreign relations and a weak economy in contrast to the Constitution that only had one problem, the struggle over the ratification. the Articles of Confederation achieved the Northwest Ordinance and the Northwest Territory and according to a history website, the Constitution achieved that we had a system of checks and balances, that we had a bill of rights, and, eventually, the survival of a bloody civil war intact. Lastly, the Constitution had three compromises: the Great Compromise, the Three-Fifths Compromise and the Slave Trade compromise.
