The Gilded Age was a time of trusts, monopolies, abuse to workers, and coverture. These problems continued long enough that the attempts to fix them lead to the Progressive Era to take place. Progressivism came into effect because of the Gilded Age because it was created to fix the economy of the Gilded Age. The Gilded Age lead to the Progressive Era in many different ways, a lot of unfairness and hard times made the Progressive Era come into action.

As mentioned already the Progressive Era focused on reforms and rights, focusing on capitalism and its monopolistic tendencies, the out-of-control issues that are; disease, poverty, and crime. During the Progressive Era, there were great things

The Progressive Era was a time in United Sates History (roughly between 1890 and 1920) that bolstered unparalleled reform across America. Consisting of multiple social welfare reforms, three constitutional amendments, and numerous international policy changes, the Progressive Era resulted in very distinct changes throughout the country. One area of reform heavily emphasized by the movement was social welfare. Movements regarding social welfare aimed to confront and reform the growing gap in American society. As a result of the industrialization preceding and continuing into the Progressive Era, there was a disparity of wealth never before seen in American history.

The Gilded Age led to Progressive reform, because America had big corporations that had business that corrupted government officials. The Progressive reform started in 1890s to the 1920s until they could get it settled. The people started to fight against the monopolies. The people fought until they got what they wanted.

The Progressive Era was a time for the United States society to fix the problems of government, living conditions, and trusts that were brought on by the Gilded Age. President Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson stepped up in hopes to correctly fix the evils of society. There are a variety of different plans that were discussed in order to properly satisfy American’s and work towards limiting problems during the Gilded Age such as child labor and assimilation. These two reformers first addressed these issues through working to eliminate bad trust, strengthen unions, improve poor living and working conditions, and control corruption in government. The Federal Government worked towards fixing the issues of prostitution, alcoholism, and gambling.

The Industrial Revolution brought many advancements in technology and the economy. However, it also uncovered many issues for the working class, ones that ran dominant and unchecked during the Gilded Age. The mindset of the American working population also began to develop in their mindset to question and fight against the conditions they were forced to endure. Progressives headed the movement, bring on their own era of change and justice. The transition and duration of the Gilded Age to Progressive Era brought many adaptations to worker’s rights and regulations in the workplace.

Progressive Era Reforms During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the United States was experiencing a time of widespread reform. This movement brought great changes to multiple fields and areas in the United States. These reforms were ideas that improved the quality of life for working and normal citizens in the United States. Two such examples of these movements are found in reforms made within the working and living conditions across America.

The Progressive Era lasted from the 1890’s to the early 1920’s. It was centralized around socialism and political reform. One of the major changes that took place during this era, was the labor legislation. Many workers were working long shifts, for several days straight, making their work life just about unbearable, and unworkable conditions. The job environment had become to where it was unsafe, unsanitary, and unregulated conditions for very low wages.

The country started to become more industrialized based, while the agriculture industry decreased. Due to these changes in the economy, industrial workers and farmers struggled.

The Progressive Era was a period of time, from 1890 to 1920, that people start believing that the society problem could be faded by providing a safe environment, good education and an efficient workplace. The people who wanted changes in the society were called Progressives. Most of them were well educated, journalist, they went to college. There were a lot of problems that people tried to fix them or improve them, most of them were fixed but other we are still trying to fix them. During this period there were a lot of issues and problems but there were some prominent ones, like: Women Suffrage, Temperance or Food and Health.

The “Progressive Movement was an early-20th century reform movement seeking to return control of the government to the people, to restore economic opportunity, and to correct injustices in American life.” (Danzer R54). The Progressive Era marked the end of the “Gilded Ages” and a start of a new era. The Progressive Era started in 1901 in the United States (Fagnilli 26). There were many major reforms in the Progressive Era that altered and advanced American society.

The Gilded age was a period in the late 1800s (1865-1900) that showed tremendous increase of wealth caused by the industrial age. The lifestyle of the rich during this period hid the many problems of the time that eventually brought about the progressive era movement. This was a movement for reform between 1900-1920s. Progressives typically held that the irresponsible actions of the rich were corrupting both public and private life. Forces such as immigration, the Populist Party and industrialization that led to the progressive era also impacted the American government both in its activeness and its democracy.

According to "American-Historama.org", "The 'New Women' of the 1920s had been given the right to vote.... could attend college, get a job or career..... clamoring to learn how to drive" This shows how the introduction of the "New Women" were influential because before the 1920s, women were housewives and had little education. However, on August 18, 1920, women were finally given the right to vote. This means that their issues such as alcohol, child labor would now be addressed. In addition, many of the "New Women" fought for equal education and job opportunities. Although women did not get exactly what they want, they would lead the way for many other women of different eras to help get equal opportunities for both genders.

The Gilded Age and the Progressive Era, although chronologically adjacent, were two of the most wildly different periods in American History. The Gilded Age brought forth the rise of big business thanks to laissez-faire capitalism, allowing for a handful of wealthy elites to climb to the top of the social, political, and economic food chain and steamroll everyone else in their way. Meanwhile, the Progressive Era solved some of the issues the Gilded Age created and made life in America more suitable for all types of people. The Progressive Era was different from the Gilded Age because of the work of muckrakers, the ratification of progressive Amendments, and presidential interference with big business.

And their traditional roles included staying home, rearing children and looking after their families. Women were not granted the right to vote until August 18th 1920 (The 19th Amendment, n.d.). The 19th Amendment to the U.S Constitution granted American women the right to vote—a right known as woman suffrage.
