For this analysis I’m going to be reflecting on how you can gain authority in a new discourse community. The discourse community that I am going to be looking at today is a high school tennis team. I was interested in reflecting on this topic because when I first started playing tennis on my high school team I didn’t have any authority. Then suddenly after one match I was one of the most authoritative players on the team and continued to be so for the rest of the season and the next year. This genuinely confused me at the time and I have never gotten a clear answer to why I suddenly had so much influence. Now I’m going to use this opportunity to reflect on the events that caused suddenly caused me to be influential. For this community analysis …show more content…
This will be the easiest way to gather, record and share all the data that I have stored in my head. In order to analyze and interpret my data I will reflect on who had authority before I did, how did they get the authority that they had and how did I get my authority so quickly and, seemly, randomly? Obviously my memory is not perfect also I was not on the tennis team when the student before me gained most of her authority so there will be some unclear parts that I will try and work around. I think that I will benefit for this because it will shed some light on why I suddenly was in a position of power and will clear up some questions that I have had for a long time. Also this will benefit other people because it 's just another example that might bring up more questions or solve some question that other people might have. It might help somebody on a high school tennis team understand how and why the gained authority or help someone gain authority. In this community analysis I will be reflecting on how I gained authority in my high school tennis team. Other researchers can take up my question and adapt it to any sport whether it 's in high school or not. I think it would be very interesting for other reaserches to look at any close tightly knit communities and figure out how people gain authority in those communities. Maybe look at how somebody reacts when
In any discourse community, leadership is a crucial factor and on a sports team, this should be a responsibility dedicated to the player that shows the qualities and can bring satisfaction. This feeling can be gained by working hard at practices and showing the results at the soccer games. The feeling calls you to set personal and team goals. Physical and soccer skills are not the only qualities needed to be part of the soccer discourse community. There are other skills that can help the players develop such as relationship skills.
For me, the logos, pathos and ethos perspective of joining a discourse community I had been part of, taught me a lesson about interpersonal skills, organizational systems and professionalism. My aim of this paper is to share my experience of joining Chitwan Pharmacy Student Association (CPSA) via use of rhetorical skills that we have discussed in class of English 1301.
This can change the world by making things like sports more
From my experiences and accolades, I attained a broad perspective that will leave an ever-lasting effect on the ETSU community.
The same aggression to improve that I put into rising in ranks academically, I also put into my new sport of choice; Tennis. I have been determined to improve as a player and have thrown myself at any opportunity to do so. This drive has helped me transition from the bottom of varsity to the top-ranked male player and team captain both junior and senior years. I may not be playing baseball today, but I have taken the lessons I learned from leading my team and applied them to other aspects of my life, such as my position as Tennis Team Captain.
We communicate in many ways, either by email, telephone, text, face to face, social media or letters and the language we use allows us to get things done, nonetheless the language and communication method in which we chose to use can vary depending on the discourse community. Much like John Swales suggests a discourse community involves a group of people who share the same common public goals, such as shared interests, rules, structure, and vocabulary. When thinking about the several discourse communities I am evolved in, which include family, coaching football, college student, and a few friends. These discourse communities have influenced me, given me insight of where I come from and tell who I am as a person. I also believe much like Swales,
An important discourse community that was a part of my life was my volleyball team during my four years of high school. I started playing my first year going into high school and continued until I graduated. Until now I wasn’t even aware that would even be considered a discourse community, but it fits all of the qualifications of Swales’ definition of a discourse community. Goals

Creations, like most things in life, are improvable. Ideas and theories are always evolving into different ideas or more sophisticated ones. Discourse communities is a term that has been debated over the years. Three of those debaters are James Paul Gee, James P. Porter, and John Swales. In this essay I will analyze what each of these writers see as the definition of a discourse community while comparing specific points that each of them have regarding their personal view on the subject.
Keeping in mind the six characteristics needed to make a discourse community, I studied a community that I am apart
Genograms are a great way to organize different subtypes of your family. You can organize a genogram with generations, authority, power, and age. When I organized my family in these groups I realized that age sometimes does not correlate to how much power the family member may have. I thought I knew everything about my family members and their roles but, after doing this assignment it made me make better conclusions why some people have more say than other do in the family. Genograms also helps make connections why you are not as close to some family members but closer to others.
If one does not put their efforts forth, and expects a positive outcome, they will not see one unless they exercise what they know and use their time constructively. In any discourse community time is valued greatly. A discourse community is defined by Mr. Brown,
Have you ever felt you have ruled over a person or several individuals? You may have experienced this feeling if you are a coach, teacher, boss, or even a team leader in something. Could you imagine if all kids had authority over both of their parents, and how much different our world would be? There are many views on authority, just like anything else. Some people agree with others, while they also disagree.
Competitive sports provide a community which kids can work with and beat other teams with. “Playing a sport helps children develop social skills which would benefit them even when they grow older. Playing sports teaches them about teamwork and cooperating with others. They learn to interact with people from different ages” (Mahaseth). When these kids grow up, they can use these skills to be able to cooperate and talk with their colleagues.
ABSTRACT From past to present, many leaders, politicians, scientists, or even common peoplehave experienced and tasted the absolute power. At the very beginning of this ownership, everything seemed usual and innocent. However; it has been observed that people who have absolute power fell into error thinking that corruption of power would never give rise to their end. The objective of this essay is to examine the reasons behind two literary protagonists of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus’ downfall.
