In the United States, using the term “model minority” to describe Asian Americans does not negate the fact that they are still a minority who deal with the same hardships and discrimination as other minorities. Issues such as these are undeniably in the school systems that are inhabited by large numbers of these students with Asian backgrounds. They are exemplified by the bipolar historical treatment of Asian Americans, the numbers that matter in education today, and in the problems created and overcome by the people that face them. Sifting through the dark and difficult history leads to the light on the other side of a tunnel where there can be found methods and solutions to create success for the Asian American people. They have to fight against the other minorities that are depicted poorly, and Asian Americans have some advantages in their work fields, but racism is ignored and discrimination is too.A majority of other minorities one will come across has the negative stereotypes of being lazy and stupid attributed to them unlike the Asian Americans. Violence has broken out due to this issue, and many children are prone to bullying by other minorities when they are seen as being smart because of their race. Racial nerds is one term that could be given. Most Asian Americans are victim to the prevailing stereotype that they are at the top of their fields in all aspects of life. In school, they are supposedly most proficient at math and science which are the top subjects in need of strong minds today. However, if a closer look is given, it can easily be seen that these students are not as high achieving as one would think. Cambodians score much lower on tests than Vietnamese students, but they are all lumped into the same group. “Such a stereotype may appear to be beneficial, and is certainly helpful in many ways to Asian Americans in terms of opportunity, it also disguises institutional racism and systematic discrimination” (Spradlin, 2011, p. 103). Cultural tendencies can also serve to be barriers. For example, most Asian students are raised in an environment to respect their parents and elders. Parents are often seen as the iron fist at home that forces children to study and focus all time on homework and improvement. This actually seems to be a great support system that leads to higher grades, test scores, and intelligence. Confucian ideas of filial piety are the source of this respect and fear of elders, parents, and ancestors. “Dishonor brought to the family by any one member reflects on all family members,” so students must be very careful to do everything in their power
The model minority hypothesis is where Asians were supposed to be economic and academically successful, respectful to authority, high moral values, adhere to strict gender roles, enjoyed strong and stable nuclear families and other Asian triats they are deemed to possess. The model minority term began after the confession program where Chinese immigrants can confess their illegal document status to become status, but must turn in any other Chinese who is using undocumented paperwork. Model minority was used frequently as young white kids become rebellious This notion of a model minority according to historian Helen Wu is that there were “two dominant American values during the cold war”. The evidence Lee provides is essentially accurate because she herself is an Asian American woman. She has dealt with the “model minority” stereotype in her own life experiences so it makes her a good candidate to be researching the students at AHS. Although Lee is an educated ethnographer,it does leave room for her results to include inaccuracies. When she first arrived at the school to begin researching, she noted that “in addition to my ethnic/racial identity and social-class identity, I discovered that my gender, age, American-born status, and position as a graduate student influenced how students reacted to me” (Lee, 2009, p.20). Some of the students recognized these pieces of her identity and then accepted her into their lives.
In this memo I will be going over Higher Education Debates dealing with the fears of Asian quotas being imposed; as well as going over why there seems to be a trend of Asian-American parents who are more biased towards prestigious colleges. For the first article regarding Asian quotas, I will be summarizing and reflecting upon the six arguments whether it is believed that certain Ivy league schools impose a quota on the Asian-American population or not. As for the piece dealing with Asian American parent preferring Ivy League schools for their children, I will briefly summarize and discuss the cultural reasons why Asian-American parents are highly selective over their college choices for their children. I have chosen to do this reading response of Lee’s piece about model minorities. This chapter focuses on stereotyping of Asian American students and the affects that that has. This piece starts off by discussing how there are two main stereotypes of Asian Americans and those are: being the foreigner and the model minority. Next, the piece discusses how Asian Americans are not seen as authentic, which has resulted in modifications to try and achieve the “American” standard of beauty. I believe that the central argument of this piece is showing that stereotyping Asian americans is detrimental to their education and their identity.

A classroom should be filled with a wide variety of languages, experiences, and cultural diversity. An effective teacher understands the importance of culturally responsive teaching, and recognizes the significance of including students ' cultural references in all aspects of learning. Having an enriching classroom that engages all students does not mean making judgments about a student’s culture based on their skin color, gender, or socioeconomic status, rather it means knowing each student in a way that is individualized. According to the authors of The First Day of School: How to be an Effective Teacher Harry Wong, race, gender, religion, financial statue, and skin color is the least important factor determining a student’s achievement. Moreover, demographics and culture are not an excuse for students’ lack of achievement.
Socioeconomic obstacles impede the academic achievement of students. “Hispanics have poverty rates that are two to nearly three times higher than whites; and 40 percent of their population is foreign born” (“Hispanics: Special Education and English Language Learners”). Living in poverty affects educational attainment. There is a gap in the educational outcomes because of socioeconomic status (SES). Moreover, the American Psychological Association (APA) states, “large gaps remain when minority education attainment is compared to that of Caucasian Americans”.
Ideally schools would provide equal education and opportunities for all children, but in reality racism, sexism, classism, and other forms of discrimination still exist, albeit more hidden, in our schools today. Rather than stressing academic enrichment, the elementary schools that Chicanas/os attend to focus on academic remediation and a deceleration of the curriculum. These binds make it seem as every Asian has the american dream. All Asians live in a picket fence world of perfectness. This is not the case in all instances. Some Asians are struggling to make end meet and are swallowed up and left behind because of this stereotype. In particular, lets look at a woman named Pranee Wilcox ,who worked as accountant back home in Thailand.
Minorities have made significant strides towards equality in American society. In America the minority groups are being stereotype due to their ethnicity. The media has had a significant impact in passing the stereotypes to the work that have convey negative impressions about certain ethnic groups. Minorities have been the victim of an industry that relies on old ideas to appeal to the "majority" at the expense of a minority group ideals (Horton, Price, and Brown 1999). Stereotypes have been portraying negative characteristics of ethnic group in general.
Latinos and blacks ‘need to work harder to move up. ’”14 The study asked 898 freshman from 27 different prestigious universities on how they perceived Asian, Latino and Black Americans based on their intelligence and work ethic.
Asian students perform as well as white students in reading and better than white students in math. Reformers ignore these gains and castigate the public schools for the persistence of the gap. Closing the racial achievement gap has been a major goal of education policy makers for at least the past decade. There has been some progress, but it has been slow and uneven. It isn’t surprising that it’s hard to narrow or close the gap if all groups are improving.
Tan noted that in general, Asian Americans perform better on math and science achievement exams than on English ones. The low representation could be the result of Asian American students who use broken or limited English being steered away from writing into math and science. Racial inequality in education is predominant in black students and is perpetuated further by educators. A theory that explains this could be the “hidden curriculum” theory which conditions students to believe that their cultural backgrounds must be silenced to resemble the model white student. Studies show that training educators in cultural sensitivity and establishing trust between students and teachers allows students from varying cultural backgrounds to improve in classroom settings. RACE INEQUALITY IN U.S. EDUCATION Considered the “melting pot” of the world due to its high diversity, the United States has been renowned for the varying cultures and races populating the country.
In the Story “Growing Up Asian in America” by Kesaya E. Noda, she discuss many of her life events that helped her become who she is today. Noda throughout the story struggles to find her true identity. She struggles to take her three identities, Japanese, Japanese-American, and Japanese-American- woman and make them all turn into one. A great example of Noda’s struggle to find out her identity in the Japanese culture would be, “My race is a line that stretches across the ocean and time to link me to the shrine where my grandmother was raised” (lines 44-45). This means that no matter where in the world she goes she will always be connected her family.
