The Department of Justice and Equality, agencies and An Garda Síochána is responsible for crime prevention. These organisations provide community safety and crime prevention. However, communities play a vital role in crime reduction.
Neighbourhood watch scheme:
The neighbourhood watch scheme was set set up in 1985 by An Garda Síochána to prevent crime and is run locally in towns and villages. It runs off the An Garda Síochána Community Relations Section. It relies on the voluntary help of members of the community. There are 2,600 Neighbourhood Watch Schemes in Ireland.

Garda national surveillance unit (NSU):
Often known as the tango squad, this unit in the Gardaí are responsible for gathering information and surveilling crime operations. The chosen members of this organisation are undercover Gardaí who remain anonymous to the public and carry firearms. The unit is in the area of the special detective unit, within the crime and security Branch. The Garda ERU are trained Gardaí who specialize in weapon procedures and respond to high risk situations within Ireland. The unit was formed in 1977 and was known as the "special task force". The ERU are associated with the Irish Army, sharing offices and equipment. Weapons include pistols, shotguns, snipers and machine guns. In total there are fifteen regional offices for investigative GBI agents. At each office, there are two supervisors, one of them is Special Agent in Charge (SAC) and the other is an Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC). Opportunities for advancement:- A lot of opportunities for advancement are grown in law enforcement areas such as crime scene investigation department. A CSI officer has the chances to choose from various advancement opportunities. One of those is the forensic specialists or technicians post. They are the ones who spend more time in the lab to study about firearms, accomplish crime lab analysis, DNA analysis and tool mark examination.
There are four units they all handle different types of crimes. Unit one handles the high priority cases that put more than a few people in danger.

The term National Security must be viewed in its broadest context in that it is more than just dealing with military threats. It must be viewed as safety from chronic threats and protection from sudden disruptions in the patterns of daily life.
