Dynamic Character In The Crucible

He tried to redeem himself by confessing to everyone and staying away from Abby. When he confessed his affair with Abby to the court he was hanged. John Proctor is the tragic hero in The Crucible because he was highly respected, had a downfall of adultery, redeemed himself, and died. A tragic hero has to be a highly respected person.

One could argue that loyalty is the most important trait that a person might posess. However, John Proctor proved that every person has flaws, and his was lack of loyalty. The main plot of The Crucible is based off the back story of Proctor and Abigail. While Abigail was doing housework for the Proctor’s, John was cheating on his wife with her. Elizabeth found out about it, and sent Abigail away.

One character that stood out in the story was John Proctor because of his growth as an individual throughout the story. In the beginning John is a remorseful man who has a closeted secret that he cannot forgive himself for but towards the end of the story he starts to gradually show examples of courage and bravery.

The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a phenomenal play containing wide varieties of static and dynamic characters. A few main characters are very dynamic and change immensely throughout the play completely shifting former beliefs and ideas. John Proctor is one of these characters that go through this metamorphosis. In the beginning of The Crucible, John Proctor is a man burdened by his sins, but throughout the play his morals and true nature are tested and brought into light, and by the end he learns to accept forgiveness and truly finds the goodness he had been seeking in himself.

One major character trait of John Proctor was his honesty. When John Proctor found out about the accusations, he looked for the truth. Once he was told by Abigail Williams that the witch accusations were not true, he went to court with Mary Warren to tell the Judges the truth. When the Judges started questioning him, he admitted his affair with Abigail Williams, which put his name at risk.

The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts. The trials resulted in the executions of twenty people, fourteen of them women, and all but one by hanging. The play was written in 1952 after the Red Scare in America that caused much hysteria, like the Salem witch trials. JOHN PROCTOR: TRAGIC HERO Arthur Miller’s The Crucible is a greatly revered work, and it reflected the times of America in the days of McCarthyism. Perhaps the character that connected to the audience most was John Proctor, the protagonist of the play. He reflects the mistakes that we have made in our lives, and the struggle that some of have while trying to take the blindfold off of other people. He should be considered a hero because he feels guilt, and therefore tries to make up for the fact that he once had an affair.

We see characters harden toward each other, stay firm in their wickedness, as well as completely change their mind on matters. There are many different dynamics happening during this play simultaneously as well as drastic changes from act to act. The Crucible shows depth in human interactions. With there being many different layers to this play a prominent color is weakness.
