Economic Differences Between New England And The British Colonies From 1600 To 1750

“They became a regular part of the commerce linking Europe, Africa, and North America” (Nash, p. 95). They were in a business enterprise with trading with other countries. They were part of a global trade and their economic bases were almost the same. Population increased as soon as agriculture started. They had a labor system that included slaves, indentured servants, unfree labor, and farmers.

In the early 19th century many religious and racial groups migrated to the Americas due to persecution. From these groups formed the New England, Middle and Southern Colonies. Each set of colonies were based off of different natural resources and each allowed the regions to prosper. Whether they were proprietor, religious or royal colonies they each were original founded under the British government as a way to expand the country’s borders. In the end due to conflicts with neighboring Indians, different Religious groups, and later Britain itself.

The three colonies Middle Southern and New England colonies had there own form of living, the colonies were found before the 1700s. In the 1600s was when the colonies were found. There are a lot of differences and similarities between the Southern and Middle colonies. One similarity is the diversity of people they both had immigrants Southern had scottish, irish, and german. Middle had other kinds of immigrants.

The Revolutionary War gave reason for America’s unification, but the diversity of America made it impossible for one unified culture to emerge. By 1700, the New England and Chesapeake colonies had evolved into two distinct societies contrary to their predominantly English populations, but these differences did not happen quickly. Rather, they were the result of the colonists’ intentions during colonization, their distinct environments, and their different social and political inequalities. The thirteen colonies, which were divided into 3 regions, were all different and unique in many ways. However, the diversity among the New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies and the Southern Colonies is perhaps what made them so distinctive. The differences between these three regions affected the way they lived, but later, they gained knowledge by analyzing their mistakes and differences. Although these three regions only had a few things in common, it was the differences among them that helped them grow and learn from one another.

Early American colonies were the base of what it is now known the United States of America. Although almost all of the colonies were from the same time period each colony differed from each other. Some of the colonies differed by their economic system and also by their way of running their colony, their government. Also, the colonies differed from their culture and their way they lived. In addition, the New England and the Chesapeake colonies were not the exception they also differed from each other.

Amid the late 16th century and into the 17th century, European nations quickly inhabited the new lands called the Americas. England sent out multiple groups to two regions in the eastern coast of North America. Those areas were called the Chesapeake and the New England locations. Later, in the end of the1700 's, these two locations would combine to create one nation. However originally both areas had very different and distinctive identities.

The New England colonies were first founded in the last 16th to 17th century as a sanctuary for differing religious groups. New England was made up of the Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. New Hampshire, however, was formed for economic reasons instead of religious ones. The Chesapeake region, which is made up of the colonies of Maryland and Virginia, was founded by the British colonies for the purpose of farming. However, by the 1700’s, despite both being settled by Englishmen, New England and the Chesapeake region had developed differently.

The Northern and Southern colonies in the seventeenth century had many differences and similarities. The differences go all the way back to the beginning as the United States was only separated into the Northern, middle and southern colonies. Each colony shared many differences mainly revolving around religion, politics, economics and social issues. The result of the way that they dealt with these issues in our country today. The Puritans established the Northern colonies and the southern colonies were ruled by The house of burgesses.

Both the Chesapeake colonies and the New England colonies were vital to Britain’s atlantic trade. They both had large populations and booming economies. However, they both eventually established their own cultures that were different from each other. The colonies’ differing beliefs, environments, and labor lead to the contrasting cultures. The New England Colonies were a Puritanical society, who preached against excess.

There were many differences between the two colonies when it came down to their political systems. First, both colonies were greatly influenced by Governors. This influence can be seen by Sir William Berkeley when he describes that the, “Governors…laid the Foundation of our wealth and industry on the vices of men”. This statement shows that the governors that were in the Jamestown colony had a profound influence during the beginning of their colony. Another thing to note about the Jamestown colony was in Frethorne’s letter when he stated that, “we took two alive and made slaves of them… it was by policy”.

New England and the Middle Colonies are 2 Colonies that are total opposites from each other, but do have some similarities. New England had no religious freedom because if you were not puritan then you could not live there. On the other hand, the Middle Colonies did have religious freedom, you could be a Quaker, Lutheran, Jewish, Catholic or French and a lot more as well. New England and the Middle Colonies share some similarities based on religion and other things as well. Some similarities were that the church was an important part of both New England and Middle Colonies towns.

The New England and Chesapeake colonies were established during the early 1700s. Despite the population originating from England, the regions had distinct societies. This was due to the fact that many settlers voyaged to the New World in search of riches, to seek new lives, or for religious freedom. They differed socially, politically, economically, and geographically.

In 1664, the English took control of New Netherland adding it to their colonies. The English King Charles II granted the former Dutch territories as a proprietary colony to his brother James who later became King James II. The Duke divided the colony in half assigning two proprietors to get in charge of the colony; Lord John Berkeley, which he was in charge of the West side of New Jersey and Sir George Carteret who was in charge of the East side. The West side colony faced the Delaware River and the East side colony faced towards the Hudson. Since then, New Jersey became a proprietary colony with eastern and western division.

Their policies and methods of colonization were consistent in every region they conquered because of this fact. The British colonies were inconsistent because the they were controlled by both the king and stock companies, which meant that different colonies had different incentives to settle. This hybrid of authority in each region meant that the North American colonies cannot be studied thematically as a whole, rather they must be analyzed as individual cases. These differences were determined by the motivations to settle the colonies and what environment the people lived
