John Wilkes Booth famously etched his name in the history books by successfully assassinating President Abraham Lincoln. It wasn’t the first time someone attempted to knock off a sitting President of the United States. It also was not the first time Booth had attempted to go after Lincoln. A kidnapping plot was foiled not long before Lincoln was shot at Ford Theater. This was the first time though the assassination was completed without failure. Before Booth was known to the world as an assassin, he lived quite an adventurous young life. Booth was born in Bel Air, Maryland on the 10th of May in 1838. He was also known as a pretty talented actor before he started to dive into the world of politics. Acting became a normal ritual for him at the tender age of seventeen. Staring in various plays gave him some notoriety and positive praise for his talents. John also had an older brother who acted as well. His name was Edwin Booth born five years earlier. Carter compares how Edwin has been labeled the “good” brother and John as the “bad”. Edwin was known as one of the greatest classical actors of his day. Although the comparison of the two had some ups and downs. Before the Lincoln assassination John was valued as the shining and happy one. Obviously this was before he was on a quest to take out the President of the United States. Edwin had his own sins he was facing, as he was an avid alcohol abuser.1 Even after Booth murdered Lincoln, Edwin went on living his life. The idea changed from kidnapping to finally deciding to kill him would be the best option. Harris would explain only weeks later the commanding officer of the Confederate Army, Robert E. Lee would surrender. This infuriated Booth and the individuals behind the fumbled kidnapping plan.5 A new plan was quickly devised and Lincoln wouldn’t be the only target. Vice President Johnson along with the Secretary of State William Seward would also be targets of the conspirators. This would all occur on the 14th of April 1865 at Fords Theatre in Washington D.C. President Lincoln would be there with his wife watching Our American Cousin. Harris notes the assassination went down relatively easy. Booth walked into the sitting box unnoticed to anyone. There was supposed to be a guard standing watch outside of the theater box. However, the bodyguard was vacant as he left the president unprotected.6 Booth would fire one shot into the back of Lincoln’s head moments after he had visual of the president. President Lincoln would never recover from the gunshot. Immediately, Booth fled the scene on horseback after breaking his leg during his escape. The Vice President was never harmed in the incident. Henretta and Brody assert that the death of Lincoln started a vigorous hatred that the Northerners had for the South. The death gave power to Andrew Johnson who did not retain the political or honorable
For the 153 years since the assassination of one of America’s most beloved president, Abraham Lincoln, it has remained a mystery the motive behind John Wilkes Booth’s famous murder inside Ford’s Theatre. In 1937 Otto Eisenschiml's Why Was Lincoln Murdered was published. The book created the theory that Lincoln’s Secretary of War Edwin Stanton was directly involved in Lincoln's death. Edwin Stanton was the mastermind behind Lincoln's assassination because Stanton rejected to go to the theater with Lincoln many times, his distaste of the southern reconstruction, and the group that took profit over southern territories and the elaborate plan for Booth to escape. This book creates many extremely plausible points that connect Stanton to the assassination.
John rented a horse on April 15, 1865, and he would then ride this horse into an alleyway behind Ford’s Theater. An innocent bystander was nearby, and John asked if they would hold his horse, the bystander, not knowing that John was about to enter Ford’s Theater where he would shock the United States by killing the president. John entered the theater heading straight for the president’s box with one mission in mind. Assassinating the president, and sadly, he did just that. After shooting the president in the back of the head, and killing him, he then jumped off the president’s box, scurried across the stage, and threatened attendees of the show with a knife.

Apparently he was the guy for the job. Many critics say that Lee Harvey Oswald might have been brain washed by the CIA.

Five days after the Confederacy’s surrender, John Wilkes Booth had successfully killed one of the most influential presidents in American history to do what he believed would redeem power to the southern states. Booth’s main goal was to tear down the Union’s government by taking down their leader and his successors, but the original plan did not involve the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Historian Christopher Hammer explained in his article "Booth's Reason for Assassination", the former actor had created a group of co conspirators and designed "a ploy on March 17 to capture Lincoln as he traveled in his carriage [and had] collapsed when the president changed his itinerary—and several of Booth’s conspirators ultimately left the group.” (Teaching History). Since the failed capture of the president, Booth hatred towards Lincoln grew after hearing the president’s goal to officially abolish slavery in his Second Presidential
“John” notes that Booth’s family was a renowned acting dynasty at the time of the Civil War. Booth himself was an ardent supporter of slavery with a burning hatred for Abraham Lincoln (Britannica.com). “Assassination,” suggests that Booth’s hatred of Lincoln may have been caused in part Lincoln’s undemocratic practices. The President deemed censorship of speeches and newspapers necessary during the Civil War. Additionally, the President was able to suspend any writ of habeas corpus, which prevented trials from taking place (2009).
