On September 11, 2001, Americans changed the way they lived their lives. They went from not worrying about their safety, to worrying about whether today was going to be their last day alive. September 11th took the lives of many innocent people that should not have lost their lives. The 911 memorial garden is the most important monument because it shows that terrorists shattered America ’s sense of safety, and courageous American citizens would give their lives in the years that followed as they fearlessly joined the fight against terrorism around the world.

In some of the pieces of literature like “I, Too, Sing America,” “America and I,” “The Bill of Rights,” and “Veterans Day: Never Forget Their Duty” the authors have different ideas of what it means to be American. They also express their ideas using different strategies: negation, classification, and function. With these ideas and strategies a more complex definition on what it means to be American was developed. Being an American means being patriotic, having freedoms, and believing in a dream of something amazing. Having patriotism is part of being American.

A day forever remembered in United States history is September 11, 2001. Not only did the event that occurred on this day effect the loved ones of many, it touched every U.S citizen. The event of 9/11 has gone down as one of the most tragic and influential events in all of history. There were many causes that led to this disaster and you mustn’t forget the effects it left on America. You may be unaware of how far the event goes back in history, with causes dating back to the 1980’s.

The actual definition of American is relating to, or characteristic of the United States or its inhabitants. Being proud of who you are and the place you live. Americans have defined themselves not by their racial, religious, and ethnic identity but by their common values and belief in individual freedom. Almost all Americans have varied definitions on what being an American means. In the 1800’s we had what seems to be a single meaning for the word American. It was that they defended and fought for the country they love and also a vast majority of America was white men, but hey, we have to start somewhere. With our home across the seas we were safe from persecution. Now, we work alongside the British in trade, news, and of course in the United Nations.

Being an American can mean different things to different people, but at its center, it is about being part of a nation that values freedom, equality, and diversity. One of the most important aspects of being American is our value of freedom. This includes the freedom of speech, religion, and expression, as well as the right to own property and pursue happiness. This commitment to freedom is reflected in our country’s founding documents, such as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, which establish the basic principles of our government and guarantee individual liberties to all citizens. The United States of America is a country that is built upon a foundation of unique values and principles.

What does it mean to be an American? It means different things to different people, as no one is the same. After all, we are given the right of free speech by the 1st Amendment. The criteria to be a real American is like a checklist. One first has to have citizenship of the U. S., second to be patriotic, and third to serve’s one country.

The question, “What is an American?”, can be defined differently by different people. What makes up an American can be looked at in different ways. However, an American in my opinion comes from textual evidence, defined through many different readings, such as the “Letters from Columbus”, the story of “Olaudah Equiano”, and from “Of Plymouth Plantation”. As it is defined, Americans come from slavery, but at the same time, they also come from freedom. With points from Equiano and Columbus, and also William Bradford, a Puritan, as well as with the constant changes between exploitative colonialism, violence, and the strive for freedom, America is based around both forms of Slavery and the determination for Freedom.

What it means to be an American is that you have the freedom to vote freedom of speech. You have the liberty to be what you want in America no one chooses for you. Also have the liberty to work wherever you want not be someone 's slave. Being American means you don 't have to hide your religion, the color of your skin or your sex. You have the ability to speak what you want.

What does it mean to be an American? Does it simply mean that you were born in this country? Or does it mean that you share American cultural values? And are there really any universal American values? These are the types of questions that I have grappled with throughout my life as a "minority.

There are many examples of how our country’s patriotic ideals among citizens increased after September 11th. Since then, more American flags are waving, more memorials are being built, and more moments of silence can be heard. Novelist Barbara Kingsolver wrote about “her daughter returning from kindergarten a few days after a 9/11/2001 event saying, ‘Tomorrow we must wear red, white and blue... For all the people who died when the airplanes hit the building’” (Stinson).
