Effects Of Imperialism On India

Though some may say that England’s effect on India was bad, looking at India now compared to before it was under the British wing, it has improved greatly. “Years of nonviolent resistance to British rule…eventually resulted in Indian independence…Despite pressing problems such as significant overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and widespread corruption, economic growth following the launch of economic reforms in 1991 and a massive youthful population are driving India's emergence as a regional and global power” (The World Factbook). Though the British rule may have been unhealthy for India, because of the British they earned their independence and they started to grow in power and are now a respected country. People would even say that imperialism has been the cause of poverty in some countries. Yet “Western culture continued to influence much of the world; transportation, education, and medical care were improved.”

Most of the governmental systems didn’t help the indians in fact the things Britain put into place for india only made india profitable for britain. While the British believed that they helped India by setting up a government and military system India disagreed. In fact, they believed that britain caused problems in the Indian way of life. The rule of the British Empire in the Indian subcontinent between 1858 and 1947 greatly affected the net economic status of India. However, as their influence started expanding, they created new policies and began to colonize India not only economically, but also socially and politically. Historians continue to debate whether the long-term impact of British rule in India was accelerating the economy or declining it. That being said, my paper is going to be assessing the positive and negative impacts on the Indian economy

It took more than 200 years for India to shake the oppressive rule of the British. Britain seized control of Indian territory until they controlled the whole sub-continent. At first india was treasured by the British more for its potential rather than its actual profit. Its 300 million people were also a large potential market for British made products. Although Britain created sound law against killing, economic opportunities and health related advancements they caused more harm than good.

The British rule in India during the Imperial period was extremely negative for the Indian people however, the British rule ultimately created a improved Indian nation. The British forced the idea of monoculture, were racist, created unfair trade and economic distress. For the Indian nation they did provide an education system, human rights, peace and created a more modern society. The British rule began in the early 1600s.

Long ago when Britain was the most powerful nation still hunting for more power, the nation took its chance to gain more glory in a far away land overseas; India. During the 1600s Britain became interested in India for its precious raw materials and the fact that the British could market many of their products to the 300 million people of India to make big profit. In 1757 the British East India Company won the Battle of Plassey against the Indians and gained some power of India. Britain would soon decimate pieces of the culture and take over the whole nation of India. The British used the idea of “White Man’s Burden” in order to bring civilization and justice to the “barbarians” and westernize them in a way. The British also brought free trade into India and while they were there became one of the wealthiest countries because of everything being extracted out of it. Lastly, the British kept peace on the region and introduced Western technologies.

Imperialism by definition is “the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries.” India had the largest impact from Imperialism brought upon by the British Imperialist movement that began in 1858. The British rule lasting nearly 90 years caused havoc on the Indian people and the government, although it temporarily improved the economic growth of the nation. According to document seven, “India became an agricultural colony of the industrial England.” There were many positive and negative impacts that came out of the long and unfair firm government laws.

India, one of the many colonies England controlled in the past was the “Jewel in the Crown” of the British Empire. Although in the beginning, it was controlled by the British East India Company as a source of cotton, tea, and indigo. The British had indirect control of India until the Sepoy Rebellion in 1857. Although Britain created India’s government and military, improved trade, protected land, claimed to improve education, and increased minority safety, however the government and military controlled and excluded Indians, trade only benefitted the British, statistics show education was better after Indian Independence, valuable land was degraded and minorities still felt fear and insecurity.

Imperialism in the 19th Century took place all over the world and changed the course of history. One of the things lost in the imperialistic age was the indigenous cultures of the countries that were imperialized. India was one example. They were colonized by the British as a financial asset. Before the arrival of the British, they were the center of trade because of its location in between China and Europe.

Even though it has been over sixty years since Myanmar was imperialized, remnants of the outcome of imperialism can still be well observed. The language, the clothing, the infrastructures all have been affected by imperialism. These effects may deceive people into thinking that imperialism was all sunshine and rainbows but in reality, imperialism brutally destroyed the different aspects of a country. Imperialism impacted societies in countless negative ways. It led to slave trade which then led to social discrimination around the world.

The British first came to India not only because of the abundance of raw materials, but also the mass potential they seen. The British East India Company, took advantage of the collapsing Mughal Empire, and broke away from their control to flourished their company. In 1857 the Sepoy army rebelled and that caused the British to come in guns blazing and take over the country. The British rule demolished India through, taxation on anything made in India, and the exportation of raw materials, which caused a plentiful amount of famine,and throughout all of this, the British kept most on India uneducated, and those they did educate, most were forced to become interpreters for the benefits it would make in taking over India and keeping the British in control. The theme of this week is Unification, the consequences that came after the unification of Italy and Germany, and the new imperialism. There were some effects that were beneficial, which includes the sense of belonging, inspire others to be independent, and opportunities for some aspiring leaders. However, imperialism made its presence in the affairs of Europe in a new form, which will serve as the source for the study of postcolonism. Despite France’s effort to be a republic, it too suffered from the emergence of men like Bismarck. Bismarck rose to power through the Europeans conflicting views of identity and vulnerability.
