A courageous character is that of which shows bravery, one who is not deterred by danger or pain. There are many characters who exhibit courage throughout The Crucible. However, there is one character in particular who stands out the most throughout the play. John Proctor seems to be the most courageous because he does several things no other character would even think of doing. Several times throughout the play, Proctor speaks out in opposition to Reverend Parris.

The name of my book in “The Crucible.” The book was written by Arthur Miller and published in 1952. The setting is in Salem, Massachusetts in 1962 during The Salem Witch Trials. This book is also a drama or play. John Proctor, Abigail Williams and Reverend John Hale are just a few of the main characters in this book.

In the play John Proctor makes the descision to tell the court that he had relations with Abigail Williams. This results in Elizabeth having to answer a tough question. Is your husband a lecher? Even though Elizabeth truly knows the answer she chooses to say no. This crucible questions elizabeths ability to tell the truth while selling her husband out.

In the pristine 17th century Christian community, it became standardized in accordance to the Bible that, “Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct” (English Standard Version, 1 Peter 3:1). Most wives in Salem during this time period closely follow their role outlined in the holy scripture, but Elizabeth Proctor undergoes a journey that alters her perception on this religious fixation. The controlling nature of John Proctor towards those who work for him also reinforces the statement made by Vowell. Although Proctor is considered to be a good man, he reveals a tendency to be controlling towards his servants. When Mary Warren comes running towards the Proctors’ home after attending the trial, John Proctor tries to force her to testify against Abigail Williams in court. People should always speak out if something bad is happening, no matter if they are standing against one person or a whole army. People can always be wrong and will sometimes need someone to push them into the right direction. John Proctor, a character in the novel The Crucible by Arthur Miller who is a farmer and is married to a woman accused of witchcraft named Elizabeth, does not agree with the witchcraft trials going on in Salem at that time. He tries to go to court with Mary Warren, a girl who was originally part of the scheme, but now says that it is fake, to prove that the witch trials are all a hoax.

When people are accused of a crime they didn’t commit, it often has lasting effects on them and their loved ones. Because reputation in the Puritan society was highly valuable, change in tolerating viewpoints other than their own was unlikely. Change, however, demonstrates character development. Characters such as John Proctor, Reverend Hale, and Mary Warren show development throughout the play in which Hale acknowledges his mistakes, Proctor sacrifices his reputation and honor, and Mary deteriorates into a weaker character. Reverend Hale enters the play in Act I as a well-respected witch hunter from Beverly who investigates the supernatural occurrences in Salem.

In my opinion John Proctor is the protagonist of the crucible, because there are some reasons. One reason for me is that John Proctor is starting the Salem witch trials indirectly. It is Abigail who starts the trials, but she only does it to kill John’s wife to be the only one John love and they finally can get married. Because of that the relationship between John, his wife and Abigail is in the foreground. Another reason why John is very important in the Crucible is that he has a strong voice in the community.

Proctors final act was honor. Proctors actions were noble, he was a very honorable man. His actions really helped him and his family name. In the passage of the book ¨The Crucible” John Proctor says ¨i have given you my soul, let me keep my family name.¨ This statement is very noble.

“The Crucible,” an Arthur Miller play, is a story during the Salem Witchcraft trials, where accusations of witchcraft were made. Elizabeth, the wife of John Proctor, found out that John had an affair with a young seventeen year old, Abigail Williams. Goody Proctor displays a disturbed tone as suspicion rose between John and Abigail’s relationship. John proctor is angered and displays an indignant tone towards Elizabeth for not trusting him. When Elizabeth tells Mr. Proctor, “then go and tell her she’s a whore,” Goody Proctor wants John to defame Abigail because she knows what happened between them.

As time has passed, throughout history, during different periods of time there are parallels. There are three eras that we are focussed on, where there are three types of people during each era. The three different eras that we’re focusing on, are The Salem Witch Trials (1600s), The McCarthy Era (1950s), and Today (2000s); the three types of people are the people who are the reasons why there’s accusations towards the accused, the accused, and finally the accusers.     In The Crucible, or during the Salem Witch Trials, the person that’s the reason why characters were accused is John Proctor. The accuser in the play, who decides to point fingers at everyone, is Abigail Williams.
