A story of significant events involving witchcraft, and murderous double-crossing town members is a play written by Arthur Miller: The Crucible. In The Crucible many people accuse other members of the town. These actions performed by the town members show their real personality and real incentive. Even though most people accused others, the people who didn’t share their accusations were still responsible for the outcome of the events. Sometimes an act of negative intimation to a loved one to do something, might backfire later. The culpable Elizabeth Proctor, with her being bitter, pusillanimous, and insecure, is responsible for the hysteria in The Crucible. Elizabeth Proctor was a bitter wife towards her unfaithful husband, John Proctor. Trust was lost towards John after he cheated on Elizabeth with their prior worker Abigail Williams. Vigilance was among Elizabeth and she condemned John often. John is irritated with the lack of trust that they have together so he stated to Elizabeth, “Spare me! You forget nothin’ and forgive nothin’. Learn charity, woman… I have not moved from there to there without I think to please you, …show more content…
John has confessed to the court of the affair he had had with Abigail. He did this to show Abigail had a motive to kill Elizabeth since Abigail was still in love with John. The court wanted evidence of the affair so they brought Elizabeth in to confirm. John said she would never tell a lie. Since Elizabeth was weak and in love she lied to save his name. “My husband-is a goodly man, sir, Then he did not turn from you… Is your husband a lecher!, no sir.”. If she had good morals for herself, she would have told the truth in court. By telling the truth there would not have been any more deaths of innocent people. Since she did not tell the truth, she sent John to jail and no justice was ever served to the innocent
In the final analysis, three important characters from The Crucible John Proctor, Rev. Hale, and Elizabeth Proctor share a bond together when it comes down to change. Initially, John was exceptionally blameworthy over the way that he deceived Elizabeth by cheating on her. As everything progress toward the end of the play, Elizabeth forgave John for his transgression triggering John to excuse himself for the wrongdoing as well. Afterward, John understood that despite the fact that he will die, he will always be a superior individual. While on the other hand on the first sight of Hale he seemed very cocky when to trying to take out all people using witchcraft for good but instantly leaves the court when innocent people are killed because he couldn't
From there they call in his wife into the court and ask his wife if John was in an affair with Abigail she lies to the court and from there they see that she is lying and they accuse her. Later she tells them that she is pregnant so they decide to let her go and wait for a year so by John having an affair with Abigail was his
Elizabeth Proctor is an Important character in Arthur MIllers' 'The Crucible'. She began as the cause of the events that took place, The drama that unfolded throughout the play was much more than than simply the proctor household, it affected multiple famiies and many innocent people were hung on false accusations. However, Elisabeth stood in the way of what abigail desired, john proctor, were it not for their marrige abigail would have no need to convince tituba and the others of the need to begin conjuring in the woods, the discovery of which began the hunts that killed innocent women. Elizabeth proctor was loyal to her husband, family, and God. She is a loving wife, however distant, she deeply cared for her husband, John, regardless of
John felt like admitting to his affair, ultimately revealing Abigail's true intentions would finally prove to the court that Abigail was lying all along. He tells them that Abigail is making up lies about witchcraft all in order to get Elizabeth hanged because Abigail longs to be with John and believes that they are in love. Admitting to this is a big deal, not only because Abigail is a child, but also because their society is run by a christian government and adultery is considered very wrong. Abigail diverts from answering whether she denies the accusations or not, and John pleads for them to believe the truth. John claims that his own wife will tell them about the affair.
But John just said before Elizabeth came in that he did commit adultery and Elizabeth knows about it too and that the court should bring her in to test her to see if shes guilty because Elizabeth never lies. But she did lie and say he was a good man. That is when Abigail screams and says she sees a bird thats trying to attack her she says that it is Mary, when obviously it wasn’t it was just all an illusion to overthrow the court once again. That is where Mary steps in after a while and joins and overthrows that act to get her out from being killed. All the other girls join in and repeat everything Mary says because if they don’t Abigail will turn against them and accuse them of witchcraft.
This disconnection between Men's Law and God's Law created a situation where the accused had to decide his/her own fate by saving his/her life by laying or by dying to be faithful, an irony to their belief in predestination. Because of this, John proctor found resolve in dying while being truthful, not only him but also Rebbecca, to puritans believers like them their actions while living were a representation that they were fated to be saved. Elizabeth's refusal to judge John Proctor comes from a pure religious sentiment that was untainted by a thirst for power. Elizabeth, through the book, mentions that the only person capable of judging John Proctor is himself, a believe that comes from the idea that John is responsible for upholding the integrity of his puritan pride and name in front of God and himself. In other words, Elizabeth understands that John must forgive himself for his own sin, as her forgiveness has no meaning regarding John's guilt in his own eyes or in the eyes of God.
Elizabeth was spared a year for she was pregnant. John had bagged Mary to confess to the scam that her and the other girls had going on. Mary warren shortly after had gave in to the other girls torment in the court. Abigail was leading the girl to believe that Mary had sent her spirit out. Mary gave in and told the court John had been sending his sprit out to make her say those lies (although they where
He was the first man to be accused of witchcraft in Salem. When accused he was sent back to jail with Elizabeth alongside. John admitted to adultery which put him in jail in the first place. He was persuaded to confess. After thinking about how it could ruin his reputation and his kids reputations he decided to ruin the confession paper.
God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat " (Miller, Pg. 1206). This quote from act three shows how damaged Proctor was for even confessing to lechery. Just seeing how sentimental John Proctor really is shows how he would go out of his own way to save Elizabeth so that she could be reunited with her boys again. Within the story Elizabeth knows that since Proctor admitted to committing adultery that means he will be sentenced to be lynched. Later in The Crucible you come to find out that Elizabeth was happy that Proctor had the audacity to commit to such sin as well as to take his life for his actions.
