Compared to other teens, Emily seems to spend more time with her little brother than her peers. Although this is typically not expected of her it can be helpful for her little brother. Emily will be able to guide and mentor him. Some more major concerns of most adolescents are body image and mass media. In terms of Emily's depression, I can tell that her self perspective on her weight is most likely heavily influenced by mass media. Today, social media portrays specific body types as what is acceptable or considered good looking. Although everyone knows that every individuals is unique in their own way when it comes to body type, the media can still take a toll on the an individual's feelings and emotions. In addition, obesity is a prevalent issue in the U.S amongst adolescent around her age. In combination, rising obesity in teens and the heavy impact of mass media will definitely cause depression to skyrocket in adolescents. It was clear that during this part of the interview Emily’s mood became gloomy as she spoke with her head down about a subject that was sensitive to …show more content…
It is clear that based on Emily’s situation she is in later adolescence which typically occurs during high school, and approaching what scholars refer to as emerging adulthood. It seems that she falls into the category of feelings of “in-between”. This means she does not feel like an adolescent or an adult and holds rolls that are consistent with both periods of development. Emerging adulthood usually starts at high school graduation and ends at different times for everyone depending when they complete the tasks necessary to become an adult. Economic independence, cultural differences, puberty, body image concerns, and being influenced by the media are all expected challenges of adolescents in the U.S today. She is experiencing instability, uncertainty, and challenges which are all apart of the appropriate development of adolescents. These are all expected and common tasks of any adolescent approaching adulthood and going through some of the many changes of
Madison was referred for a full psycho-educational evaluation as one part of her mandated three-year re-evaluation process. Madison has a current special education classification of Other Health Impaired, secondary to Neurofibromatosis. She is educated within a general education classroom; in addition, Madison attends resource room daily for 40 minutes in a five student to teacher ratio classroom (5:1). She receives counseling services with a counselor for thirty minutes twice a month. Her testing accommodations include extended time (1.5) and refocusing/redirection.
Unfortunately, they are both trapped physically in the environment that they lived, and emotionally with the constant unintentional neglect from Sonny’s brother and Emily’s mother. Emily found her escape through being on stage preforming comedy for others, her mother states “Now suddenly she was Somebody, and as imprisoned in her difference as in anonymity” (Olsen 6). Emily was now her own being, not the person she was forced to be for her entire life. Being on stage changed who Emily was, since she was constantly being shut out from her mother.
A strength of EMILY’s List is that they recruit many of the women they support. The group fins up and coming leaders with the same goals, and goes out to find them to run for the House, Senate, or Governor. It then supports these women from the start of the campaign to the finish, with hope that they will be elected into office. The group is very accomplished, showing that the tactic works and the group is progressively supporting its candidates. EMILY’s List has over 100 elected women in the House of Representatives and 19 in the Senate.
Dissatisfaction amongst today’s youth regarding their personal body image is increasingly common, warranting a necessary change in the norms and behaviours that are portrayed to Canadian youth. The necessary change that must be implemented moving forward is the portrayal of healthy and attainable body images through media. A 2012 ABC News article stated the average model weighs 23% less than the average woman (Lovett, 2012). Such an appalling statistic is something that must be tackled as we progress toward the future seeing as it showcases to the youth of today that anorexia and unhealthy body weight is seen as desirable or attractive. The relation between such a statistic and anorexia is clear.
Through the mother we can guess that Emily, when she was old enough to notice her surroundings, hated the care she was given outside of her mother. From going to her father’s relatives to daycare she changed both physically and in her demeanor. Not getting a glimpse into Emily’s head forces the reader to infer what Emily feels towards her mother and her situation based off of the descriptions noticed by her mother. No one around Emily saw the uniqueness her mother did, this leads to the assumption that she became very depressed.

This pushed poor Emily over the edge of insanity and led her to commit the heinous act of murder. In the back of her mind, she probably had only one thought if she couldn't have him, then no one else ever
Competency 1 As a teacher, I understand this competency to mean that I must be aware of human development processes, and use this information to plan instruction and continue valuation that will inspire students and cater to their individual developmental and needs. I will need to know normal stages of cognitive, social, physical, and emotional development from early childhood through the completion of twelfth-grade. Being a teacher, I will need to identify developmental differences that characterize students and consider developmental variation for instructional planning, along with effective learning experiences and assessments. I must understand how physical changes, along with social and emotional changes can disturb a student’s progress
Her family become more isolated as the years passed. As Emily got older her family became more social, but they are still distant because of the
After graduating high school, she applied for college, but while instead of succeeding, she never really applied herself. She ended up living with her homeless parents, and even though she picked up small jobs here and there, they never really lasted. She started smoking and ended up stabbing her own mother and going to jail. You can say all of this happened because she never had to pick up her own weight, so when it came time for her to get out into the world for herself, she crumbled. If she had the freedom to make her own choices and fend for herself from a young age, then she would have learned wrong from right early on while she still had
She feels uncomfortable interacting with adults, and she avoids all contact with them. “I was scared to eat alone in the company lunchroom with all of those men and ladies looking, so I ate real fast standing in one of the washroom stalls….” (54). Although she wants to be an adult, she feels like an outcast in the adult world. The same issue arises later in the day, “But then break time came, and not knowing where else to go, I went into the coatroom because there was a bench there.”
Wisely, Emily applied insights she gained to resolve formal concerns and
This can lead to her not wanting to interact with other people her age and spending a lot of time alone this is where councillors can help by talking to her and getting her to talk about her own problems. Psychologist David Elkind argued that adolescents go through a stage of self absorption that leads them to only being able to see the world through their perspective. This is called egocentric pressure where teenagers are conscious of their image at all times and believe every one is looking at
We see social media as a great way to communicate and socialize, but most of us did not realize that social media “secretly” link to the Depression. Depression is a common mood disorder that affects the way we think and feel. One of the characteristics of depression is low self-esteem, and it can easily come from the unrealistic body figure comparisons and harsh judgments from the social media. According to a 2017 study by The Royal Society of Public Health indicted Snapchat and Instagram were the two to inspire feelings of inadequacy and anxiety in the age group between fifteen to twenty-five. Seven out the ten said Instagram made them feel worse about body image and half of the age group in between fourteen to twenty-four reported Instagram and Facebook exacerbated the feeling of anxiety.
It is from this that David Elkind formed his theory of adolescent egocentrism. He states that at this age, adolescents are generally self centred and they can only see the world from their own perspective. They are highly self conscious which could be associated with Linda. Emotional – To try to understand Linda’s emotional state we should look at Erikson’s fifth stage of development which is ‘Identity v Role Confusion’.
