Equality In George Orwell's Animal Farm

Slavery has been around for decades in English history, first beginning in 1562 spreading drastically throughout the colonies. African slaves helped build the new nation into an economic powerhouse through the production of very profitable crops such as tobacco and cotton. Although slavery mostly deals with the discrimination of African Americans, there is also an aspect of slavery that includes the mistreatment of animals. This period in history included a vast majority of animals that were bought, or stolen, by plantation owners to assist them in doing the dirty work on the fields. Animals who were enslaved did not get water to hydrate nor did they get food to eat.

Throughout time there have been many conflicts between individual rights and societal concern shown in both the literary world as well as reality in history and in the current world. An example of this would be in George Orwell’s novel, Animal Farm, in which a rebellion against the unproductive owner on the farm leads to a dictatorship, lead by the animals, leaving them not much better off then they were before the rebellion. The novel could be seen as an allegory to the Russian Revolution. During the Russian Revolution the last monarch of Russia had served his country poorly and so a rebellion occur, in which the Bolsheviks took over, led by Vladimir Lenin. After the death of Lenin, there was a power struggle, in which the new dictator is extremely ruthless and paranoid.

What is a theme and why is it a must have in every story? Themes make the story make more sense because it gives you the main idea or message behind the story. And in animal farm I think the message behind it is take pride by grouping up together to overthrow the first oppressive leader so they can find a better leader Snowball would take pride in trying to become the new leader for the animal farm. The animal really liked him as he was a very joyful animal. People viewed him as a good role model and leader for the farm.

Furthermore, Napoleon gives the other animals the impression he was the sole leader of the rebellion on Animal farm and makes Snowball -a leader who wanted what was best for the animals- seem like an enemy who was in cahoots with Farmer Jones since long before the animals took over the farm. Napoleon and Squealer (another “fat cat” pig.) always put the blame on Snowball whenever something went wrong in the farm to avoid having the blame fall on them. Napoleon is an exemplary example of just how selfish and hypocritical people can be in furthering their own aims because he continued to subtly but purposely change the seven rules put in place as the pillars of animalism. For example, Napoleon and the other pigs move into Farmer Jones’s house and sleep in his bed after commanding “No animal shall sleep in a bed”, so he changes the commandment to read “no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets”.

The pigs lie to the other animals about the food shortage too, along with the outside world. They tell the other animals that food production is up 400% from when Jones ran the farm and this makes all the animals content and none of them question it. The pigs use lying and hypocrisy to make the animals do what they want. If the other animals on the farm knew that the pigs were lying to them about the food supply they would probably rebel and question Napoleon’s leadership. In Animals Farm, there is a pig who’s name Napoleon. This character did not contributed to the society with his actions. In effect, he did not respect the concept of “Animalism” which is the equality of all the animals. He did many actions that broke this conception during the entire story. At the beginning, Napoleon, take the farm with Snowball when the farmer, Mr. Jones, left.

Likewise, when one of the seven commandments change to, “ All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” (63) we can see that the pigs begin making the divide between the two classes even larger than before. The pigs are showing that they matter more and must remain at the forefront of the farm, and this change to the seven commandments show that the pigs feel insecure in their position and feel the need to rectify this with the other animals. Not to mention, when Mr. Pilkington says, “ ‘If you have your lower animals to contend with,’ he said, ‘we have our lower classes!’ ,” (65) this fortifies that the pigs have separated themselves so much from the working animals that even human leaders begin to notice the differences. The pigs wholly consolidate the power by limiting the other animals education and intelligence to see how power mad the pigs have become.

This creates an ironic effect that enhances the satirical aspect Animal Farm holds as the leadership of the pigs represent the leaders of the Russian Revolution and the rest of the animals symbolise the public. Another instance where the lack of equality can be seen is in Chapter 10. Benjamin reads the single commandment on the wall stating “All animals are equal but some are more equal than others.” The commandment serves as a paradox that defies their initial aim. A week

Animal Farm -the history of a rebellion that went wrong- is George Orwell 's brilliant satire on the corrupting influence of power. It was first published in 1945. According to Orwell, the book reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalin era in the Soviet Union. In the book, Mr. Jones, the owner of the Manor farm is so lazy and drunken that one day he forgets to feed his livestock.

All he wanted to do is look good in front of the animals and make them believe he was a great leader that was always right and that can make good decisions for Animal Farm, instead he changed the rules and modify the seven commandments that represented animalism to favor himself. The responsible for Napoleon´s actions looking good and beneficial for the animals was Squealer, that covered all of his wrong choices to avoid animals suspicions.
