It was a beautiful morning and Gabby was in the mood to hit the gym. When she arrived at the gym, she is pumped to try to have a good workout and as she is working out, she is feeling good and feeling like she is making a lot of progress. Gabby is very negative about her body and is not a big fan of it, her goal is to be satisfied with what she sees, and lately she has not been. After, she hits the locker room to clean up and as she passes the mirror, she pauses; she stares and her mood begins to change. “I don’t see much change”. Why is nothing working? I know that those things are not all caused by having a negative body image, but if they were to start decreasing, then something would finally be changing and there would be more people proud of their bodies in this world. Despite surviving the surgery that removed a cancerous tumour in her ankle, Mia is more distressed about losing her hair and half her leg than her survival which deeply enrages me. Mia reveals to us that she only had two values, which are her looks and her popularity. This is incredibly selfish and stubborn of her as following the surgery that saved her life, she was only met with horror as her leg had been sawn off, not valuing the fact that she survived and that she could’e died if she kept the tumour there. As Mia struggled to live with her new perspective of herself she internally monologues to herself, “I tried to trick myself beyond my f--ked up body… I was forced to live like this.” Along with this, “Each morning I wake up to the same sickening shock…

But everyone goes through this. I, myself have gone through serious body-image struggles in the past few years. My sophomore year my family moved to Salina and I started going to school at South. Men and women nowadays are starting to lose self-confidence in themselves and their body shape, which is negatively impacting the definition of how beauty and body shape are portrayed. “...97% of all women who had participated in a recent poll by Glamour magazine were self-deprecating about their body image at least once during their lives”(Lin 102). Skinny, beautiful hair, glowing skin and pretty clothes this style of a person is what the majority of us strive to be. But it sets such a high standard for people and leaves them unsatisfied with themselves. Her hair had to be perfect, her makeup had to be perfect, her clothes, she had to be perfect. With this obsession of hers she fell into the trap of plastic surgery, which created a new disgusting version of who she used to be, she was botched, and went into some serious debt.
We all have different body shapes, and we all seem to want to change the way we look to conform to the current image of ideal beauty. We should embrace our differences, and stop trying to be something we are not. When I looked in the mirror last year I didn’t like how I looked. Not just that I felt out of place and unattractive according to society; I could no longer do the things that I used to love to do. I changed my diet, I cut out sugar and in the past year I have managed to lose 50 pounds.
These kinds of positive thoughts show that many are not affected with what society has to say and will enjoy their body and like just the way it
