Some think that kids shouldn’t be involved in competitive sports and others think the opposite. Research shows, however, that playing sports lowers the percentage of obese children and gives them a healthier lifestyle, because of the many valuable lessons kids can learn from them and because competitive sports boost up your confidence and self-esteem and make kids work at their best effort in everything.
One reason why kids should be involved in competitive sports is because it could help stop the cases of obesity in children and allow them to have a healthier lifestyle. According to an article called “What are the Benefits of Competitive Sports for Youth?” from LiveStrong, “Millions of American children and teenagers are overweight. This

For example an article called “Get off that couch and play!” published by Sports World, states, “The challenges young people encounter when participating in competitive sports mirror those they will encounter in their lives. Students learn important life skills such as how to accept criticism, how to handle oneself under the pressure of competition, how to work hard toward a goal, how to win and lose graciously.” (Eileen Booker, 2014). This is important to notice because many might say that playing sports just help build more physical strength and help kids live a healthier lifestyle, it also teaches them important life lessons. The life lessons that the children can learn from playing sports are very useful to use out in the real world and will be later on in life. In addition, an article called “8 important life lessons kids learn from playing sports” from “The Active Times” says that eight life lessons kids learn from sports are: becoming achievement oriented, accountability, just because life isn’t fair doesn’t mean you quit, being a player vs. being a performer, setting short and long term goals, repetition, character and perseverance. (Katie Rosenbrock, 2015). These lessons that kids can learn just by participating in competitive sports are very significant and helpful. It teaches them to never give up, to have goals and to have
In competitive sports, you can learn to overcome to odds, how to interact with people as well to be modest. If I were to play hockey just for fun I probably wouldn’t have the same views and values towards sports. If I had kids I would definitely want to put them into competitive sports, wouldn’t
A major reason is that sports keep kids healthy. R. Dawn Comstock, an investigator at the Center for Injury Research and Policy stated “We have an epidemic of obesity in this country, and sports is one of the ways for kids to incorporate exercise in their lives” (qtd. in Perkel 2) . Most kids don’t get active anymore.
Concentrating on winning or losing spoils the fun that games hold. In addition, equal chances should be provided to every child to participate. Competitive nature can assist the children in their life later on, but the focus should be on better mental and physical health. (204 words) Response In “Children Need to Play, Not Compete,” the author has described sports as one of the ways that enhance mental and physical heath.
One of those reasons is, sports keeps kids out of the fridge and on to the field! In a study titled “Why Should Children Play Sports?” written by Amanda Davis states “Sports participation promotes health and wellness not only through childhood but throughout a child's lifetime. Sports such as swimming and golf are especially beneficial because the child can continue to play as an adult, benefiting from the physical activity. Children who participate in sports might also be more aware of healthy food choices. Although sports participation is an excellent avenue to promote health and wellness, parents and coaches must encourage healthy living and be positive
Dr. Frank L. Smoll states, “All children and youth need vigorous physical activity as part of their daily lives, and sports provide the benefits of exercise and the potential for acquiring a sense of accomplishment.” (Smoll 1/2).
To most kids and students, competitive sports are a gateway to blow off some steam or to have fun. To parents, the sports that their children play and the lessons that they teach are an important part of their development and life. Despite what many ‘experts’ would like you to believe, both of these statements are completely true. I believe that kids should be allowed to play competitive sports due to the health benefits, the lessons that they can teach, and as a result of the advanced equipment and rules that are focused on making sports safe, as well as the fact that sports can keep kids out of trouble. One extremely important reason that forces me to take the position that kids should be allowed to compete in competitive sports is the health benefits that children who play sports recieve.
Children experience more harmful negative impacts, rather than beneficial positive ones, such as being at a constant risk of severe injury, wanting to opt out of sports early, and being under high levels of stress and anxiety. These impacts could lead to children being injured for an extended amount of time, children being inactive and unfit later in life, children dropping out of school, and many other catastrophic circumstances that children should not have to put up with. The opposing side suggests that children who participate in competitive sports experience positive impacts, such as staying healthy and in shape, and having positive psychological benefits. In some instances, these impacts may be true, however families with a child athlete opted for fast food, ready-made meals more than those of families who did not have a child athlete. Also, while competitive sports provide some psychological benefits, it has also been proven that they can cause stress, anxiety, and ultimately, attrition for the young athlete.
Competitive youth sports have many benefits for kids and teens. However, many other people are convinced that sports can have a negative impact for children. But, there are still more positive effects in competitive sports. I believe that sports are beneficial for kids because they develop long-term life skills, improve physical well-being and health, and help expand their social skills. One positive effect of youth sports is that they help teach athletes important and long lasting lessons to have during their life.
Summary In “Children Need to Play, Not Compete,” Jessica Statsky tries to demonstrate the negative effect of organized sports on the physical and psychological health of growing child. She claims that the games are not festive but they end up in the wrong development of a child’s brain. The coaches and parents have high hopes for their children that result in the pressure building. This changes the purpose of sports from teaching tolerance, teamwork and sportsmanship to merely winning by all means.
“In the U.S., about 30 million children and teens participate in some form of organized sports, and more than 3.5 million injuries each year” claims Stanford Children’s Health. It’s definitely true that competitive sports can cause all sorts of injuries from big to small. The media teaches people simply that sports leads to horrific injuries and can cause stress, but what the mainstream media hardly discusses are the great benefits of competitive sports. While there may be some negatives to competitive sports, that’s just life, and to add on to that; there are plenty of benefits which are sure to override to media’s facts. Kids should play competitive sports because competitive sports teach children powerful life lessons, contributes to their social and mental stability, and because of the physical gain competitive sports provides.
I have loved competition ever since a young age. I have several friends that I love to compete with. We compete every day, whether it is sports or if it in school games. We have been competing for as long as I can remember. Although my friends and I believe that competition is a great thing at school, some parents and schools are trying to argue that we should remove competition from school.
The first reason sports help kids these days is by making them have a healthy lifestyle with good food and lots of exercise. This huge, as it stops kids from always eating junk and binging T.V. Sports let kids exercise in a healthy way through the important practice and energy required in competitive sports, which is encouraged by kids desire to win and get better, and forces kids to exercise by also getting better. For example, Kirk Mango (a physical educator, former coach, and national champion) says, “fitness improvements achieved through training... In a society where obesity has become a major health issue”(Mango, 2012). This shows that sports are a good way to keep people healthy.
The author Thelma Gomez, says “Playing sports is an important elemen5t in the lives of many American children.” And she is correct. Sports can make kids the next David Wright, the next LeBron James, the next Eli Manning, or the next Lionel Messi. The best part of sports is that you're improving your physical health, psychological health, social skills, and academic benefits. Physical and phychological health can benefit a child in many ways.
Some people don’t know the benefits of playing competitive sports, but After reading my essay I think you now know most of the benefits and maybe from now you might see competitive sports in a different way. Playing competitive sports matters because it has a huge impact on your life. If you are a parent reading this easy I think you should allow your child to join and play competitive sports it important that children stay healthy. For kids not everyone is good at all sports but is better for kid join and try out new things and remember it’s not all about winning but it’s also about
Research from Livestrong has shown that kids who partake in sports and, that are active have a minimle chance of becoming obese. Further more, children have a less of a risk with getting diabetes, than kids who do not participate in athletics. Research done by Livestrong suggests that When kids participate in sports teams, they are encouraged to eat more healthy. In short, kids who play and are in sports teams are more healthy, and get more exercise than kids who are not in teams. Playing sports its not only “A game,” it teaches children important life lessons, and also lesson criminal activity.
