College Athletes Being Paid College athletes put in more hours than some careers, but should they be turning into employees of the school over students? Paying college athletes would result in a change of how they perform as students. When a college athlete goes to college, they are there primarily as athletes and put their degree on the back-burner. The athletes get their degree paid for by playing for the school. If college athletes were to receive payment, the money would most likely not be spread out evenly among the sports. College athletes can put as many as 60 hours a week at games and practices (Majerol 15). This causes the athletes to put less of a focus on their school work to focus on their athletics. Many of the top athletes never even finish their degree after playing for four years (Cooper 12-13). College athletes are encouraged to sign up for easier classes. They attend “independent study courses” that involve very little work to pass the class (Neuhauser 11). Coaches often have to add incentives for athletes attending class so they can maintain their grades to keep playing sports (Lewis and Williams 22). Many of the top athletes receive a full-ride scholarship or some sort of compensation to play. If the athletes are able to finish their degree, their career pay could be raised from $22,236 to $38,820 (Gerdy 8). Many …show more content…
Athletes would are (doesn’t make sense) there just to play sports and don’t care about their degree, it wouldn’t matter how they preform in school because they are being paid. Most athletes who are playing are already receiving some sort of compensation in scholarships and grants. College athletes are not employees in the eyes of the school, they are students who “just happen to be playing sports” (Cooper 12). College athletes put too much pressure on their athletic career, when they should put the pressure on getting a degree and a
Since the NCAA was founded in 1906 college athletics have always been different, there was now an organization that would keep college athletics in check. Student-athletes are the key to college sports and most colleges as well as NCAA profits which is why they should be paid. These athletes put the majority of their time and effort into sports in addition to getting an education, but the revenue alone should be able to pay off the athlete. The argument is that there should be a difference between professionals and collegiate athletes. And, not all colleges make enough money from sports to be able to pay all their athletes.
As a matter of fact, players are virtually full-time employees for their colleges. “College athletes are mass-audience performers and need to be rewarded as such…players spend 40 hours per week on their sports… [and] are essentially working full-time football jobs while going to school.” (Text 2, lines 5, 10, 15) Therefore, unlike other students who may attend the same university/college, student athletes are required to put more effort into what they do, ensuring their best performance on the field while maintaining their grades for school. There are some seasons where school becomes a second priority, and the players would practice hours on end to put on an exciting game.
There is a controversy of whether college athletes should get paid or not? Some say that many people make money off of them by selling jerseys, doing ads, and etc. So they should at least make some money for other people using them. On the other hand, people say that they already have a full ride scholarship why do they need to get paid or what if smaller schools can’t pay them? College athletes should get paid because people make money off them, some sport careers don 't last long, and getting payed large amount of money teaches financial responsibility.
Athletes do receive several forms of compensation. First, there is the education itself. Second according to Stephen Carter - “athletes are given free room and board, and in almost every university in the country, those accommodations are spectacularly comfortable.” However no one wants to stay on the campus at all times. You are going to want to look around and do things were ever you decide to go to
College athletes put in a lot of time, effort, and work into the sport they’ve played since they were young, but they aren’t getting paid for it. These student athletes deserve to be paid because they put in countless hours of hard work and balance sports with school work. The first reason athletes in college do deserve to be compensated is because they don 't have time to fit in work with a school and athletic schedule. College athletes don’t have time to get a real job. Student athletes have a very busy schedule, they don’t have time to fit in a job.
Like I said before, every committed athlete is to wake up hours before their classes, lift or condition, then must attend class for 7-8 hours before again going to practice, which after attending an athletic study session (film), then finally get home and finish homework or prepare for an upcoming
College athletes take many risks and make personal sacrifices in order to bring in revenue for their school, for this reason, they should be paid employees. The first reason in why college athletes should be paid is that college athletes take many risks. Depending on the scholarship, if an athlete is injured and unable to play they can lose their
Taking a look at the average college student, should they be paid for what they are studying? Probably not. Then why should college athletes be paid? They shouldn 't get paid just because of their athletic ability. They shouldn 't be paid because they are students, not professionals.
College sports is one of the best-known entertainments around the world. But for the athletes, they are students first then athletes second. For college student-athletes, there are a variety of scholarships and grants to help pay for college or college debt. However, some critics say that student-athletes should be paid a salary like pro athletes would, with help from scholarships or grants. The authors of, College Athletes are being Educated, not Exploited, Val Ackerman and Larry Scott, argue that student-athletes are already paid by free education and other necessities.
Just imagine being a student athlete. For many college athletes a pursuit in athletics will provide for their family, if needed, and gives them many other luxuries. Being an athlete is hard enough, imagine being a student athlete it is literally a full time job. By paying college athletes they will receive a reward for being excellent students and athletes. To accomplish this goal colleges will have agreed to certain terms and conditions.
While other students have time for jobs, athletes won’t be able to between school, practice, and
College sports are hard work, practices take up about 60 hours a week. Does that sound like a job? College athletes as of now are not paid by the college. Even if an athlete is injured, the college is not required to pay the player’s injury. Even within the last 12 years the amount of money generated by 2 sports has increased by 300%, and the athletes still can be paid anything?
Mike says”Students all over the world work hard at the sport that true love and don’t get a lot in return for it”. While college athletes may not exactly be employees, they are more than just students. Consider the life of a student-athlete, though. The average Division I football player dedicates over 43hours per week to his sport, meaning that he spends more than a typical American work-week training and playing football, in addition to his class work. Their work, which generates exorbitant amounts of money year in and year out, deserves Compensation.
Although college athletes may be on a scholarship that is paying for their education, they also work countless hours on their craft and make millions for their
Are they students or employees? They spend more time with the sport than in school. Student athletes should be acknowledged for their performances. College athletes should be paid to play because they bring money into the school, advertisement, and they perform the same tasks of pros. College kids bring in thousands of dollars every game day.
