The economic well being of a nation varies on the speed of economic growth. Employment, unemployment, industrialization and many other factors are determinants of a country’s economic development. Unemployment has an adverse impact on the U.S. economy because it is a key indicator for economic growth. Unemployment is commonly defined as the percentage of people eager to be employed, but are currently not. It is a grave issue for any economy because it generates adverse affects not only on those that are unemployed, who suffer through the process of finding a new job, but also those who are currently employed because they feel like their jobs are not secure. Financial obstacles bring burdens to families because they cannot make ends meet. Poor standard of living is due to lack of financial stability, which leads to family conflict and stress. As the number of unemployed continues to climb or the longer they are without work the more money the government has to pay them in benefits. The effects of being unemployed also affect other businesses; due to unemployed individuals are not being able to spend money as they would if they were working businesses suffer, over long periods of time that particular business may lay off staff; increasing the number of people unemployed or potentially lose the business. Families that are poor or have a low income are more likely to commit crimes for the purpose of their own needs to survive. “It is a fact that neighborhoods where the poor are concentrated are more prone to high crime rates, and poor residents are the most common victims of crimes” (1). The best explanation for this is that poorer people have the same needs as a regular middle-class citizen. The poor citizens need certain things to help him or her live a healthy life, such as healthcare, food stamps, and more employment options. One may argue that healthcare is too expensive and that food stamps have been taken away from many people.

Those experiencing a substandard way of living may not be able to obtain quality education which can cause a lack of sufficient employment. Lower paying jobs will more than likely not include quality health insurance for the employee.
One of the main causes of unemployment was the Dust Bowl. Over planting and poor management of the land paired with a serve drought sent farmers into despair. Thousands of farmers lost their property and jobs.
